5D MKIII or 7D??? Please advise

You're not helping here Rob, i'm currently having to decide if i upgrade to the 2 or 3 from the original 5D.

I keep trying to tell myself the improvements over the 2 aren't worth that extra grand.

Argh :p

My 5D MKIII should be here by tuesday (before i hope) and i have goe from teh 40D to teh SD MKIII, plus the kit L lense. Should eb a fantastic leap forward and cant wait to see teh results.

Look forward to hearing your thoughts on it as a fellow 40D user as well Z!

But £1k over the price of the II?! Argh!

Consider it an investment :D

Edit*
40D sold for 200 and 10-22 sold for 415, that buys me the Sigma 85mm with change left over for 520 :D

The biggest selling point for me for the III over the II would be the AF system. There's not enough of a difference between the two in high ISO performance to justify that 1k... Hmph :p

Thanks :D

He's got enough spare bodies so there's no excuse!

I figured it's worth doing as much comparison as possible really. I think I have covered the main differences, maybe some other bits left but one thing I absolutely prefer on the MkIII is the shutter noise, it's just that much more pleasant to hear than the 40D and sounds more mechanical and proper compared to the dampened D800 as well.

I don't know how else to describe it other than it just sounds more professional, it doesn't sound slow even when shooting at 1/30sec whereas on the D800, because it's dampened, I find I look twice at the display to make sure it wasn't at 1/15 instead because it 'sounded' slower.

How does the 40D look at ISO 1200 compared to the 5DMKIII at 3200? because that is what is needed to make an honest comparison.

With the 40D it is different still in that at 1/30 I have to review a photo and zoom in because it's got that direct slap noise it tricks you into thinking perhaps some camera shake occurred as the mirror slapped up and down even though it had not.

You get none of those illusions with the MkIII.

And looking through the viewfinder of the 40D now I think "how the hell did I compose with a VF this small!" :D

Just a small point, if you are doing comparison then you need to make them fair. In your comparison photos of the car at night you have the same aperture and ISO for both the 40D and 5DMKIII. Clearly you could have dropped the aperture of the 40D by 1/13rd stops and subsequently reduced the ISO the same.

How does the 40D look at ISO 1200 vs the 5DMKIII at ISO 3200?

I know the 5dMKIII is still way better but thought I would point out that the increase in sensor size comes with the cost of an decrease in DoF requiring a decrease in aperture of the same amount to compensate.

AF is certainly the deciding factor, I have not seen anyone able to capture images with the III sensor that the II sensor couldn't. They are very similar. a Slight nudge in high ISO noise but not enough to make a real difference to the type of photography possible. Yeah, there are some slight improvements overall but nothing dramatic, DR is the same ball park.

Pixel Vertex Grip arrived today, build quality seems very good, the inside base is metal as is the ceiling, it seems sturdy on the tripod as well and the grip rubber quality is a mirror of the 5D's own grip. All buttons seem to work fine and battery info is reported correctly by the camera!

Only time will tell how the plastic areas wear down with use. The Meike grip on the 40D wore quite well in this regard but the pixel grip feels stronger mostly due to its tighter construction (lower profile).

The point of the test was to see the maximum ISO on the 40D vs the same ISO on the 5D to display the difference in image noise at that ISO.

Both were set to F/13 as well so dof would not have been an issue either. I do understand what you're saying though, that I could have adjusted the 40D to scale in-line with the smaller sensor format but that wasn't the point of this test :p

I never liked 3rd party grip in the past because they are not the same as the real McCoy, however in this instance I might make an exception and get one.

I just sold my old BG-E6 for the mkii and lost £90 in depreciation, which means if the same happen to this, I could even count this grip as disposable and still end up saving money compare to getting a Canon one.

Yup for the little difference in build quality (it could be argued that there's an increase in reliability as well going by reports around the web of the official grip doing strange things!) it's well worth the savings. This cost £65 so you're right, it really is throwaway money in the grand scheme of things when it comes to upgrade time!

I'm clearly missing the point of the grip. Extra size and weight just so you can put an extra battery in there.

What's wrong with just switching to a 2nd battery when the first is nearly out? :p

better balance with bigger lenses when shooting in verticals, even more so if you wack on a flash on it.

Not just balance but ease of use. I use spot AF point selection or now zone based AF but being able to swatch AF points with the grip makes it much quicker and less faff especially since now there are 61 AF points to pick from o_0

Plus when you're shooting a wedding, having the grip means you don't need to add pocket bulge by carrying a 2nd battery on your person.
