7900 GTX sli anyone doing it?

Another £400 for 1 game = nuts. Oblivion is the same as morrwind when it was released, nothing then would run morrowind full whack at acceptable fps. Play it through a bit laggy this time then play it again next year when the new big pimpinus cards are out.

If you want the short answer, and I'm speaking from experience, yes.

The long answer is complicated, featuring bottlenecks, cost to performance ratios, resolutions etc... but I think all that needs to be said has been said, and it's your decision in the end :)

According to all the benchmarks I've seen so far, your average and maximum FPS will take a steep climb, but you'd still be getting minimum FPS in the 30's when it's really busy.

You could always look at it from the point of view that the majority of the game would speed up and that your other games would benefit from the second card too. :) Not to mention benchmarks.

If you're thinking of going SLi just for Oblivion though, I wouldn't bother were I in your position.

Latest bios release from DFI fixed my SLI issues.

With both the SLi and Quad SLI systems I have to run Oblivion at 1920x1200 with the grass off to get acceptable frame rates, even then with chameleon spells and night eye outside you can see drops well into the teens. It does make a big difference in Oblivion to the average fps but the same areas will still bring your system to its knees regardless of SLI.

Serves you right for running such a hi-res widescreen panel :p

ICEMAN has that BIOS fixed the issue for both boards, ie the Expert & the DR?

As I've got the DR & am thinking of going SLI with another GTX in the next month.

Cheers.

Madness... but then again, if you've got £400 burning a hole in your pocket easyrider, just get one, it'll look nice in your sig at least. :)

Appears to have worked for both yes, not seen a crash ever since I flashed it. Just get a fan to blow across the cards if you're leaving them with the stock coolers on, top card gets pretty toasty in the SLI-DR.

No problems with that mate, as I've got the 1st one watercooled & the 2nd waterblock is in the loop waiting for the 2nd card.

I may still place a fan to blow across the RAM sinks though.

As my 1st BFG card is currently overclocked to 730/930

Oh? :o ;)

I've read a few threads and even with dual SLI setup, you're still going to get framerate drops in outdoor areas... don't expect to see continous high framerates seems to be the message... seems crossfire has the edge in most cases. ;) ... from reviews...

Oblivion Foliage (1600x1200 - 4xAA 8xAF)
7900GTX - 20FPS
7900GTX SLI - 40FPS

Oblivion Indoors (1600x1200 - 4xAA 8xAF)
7900GTX - 85FPS
7900GTX SLI - 156FPS

oh...thanks for that.

so 50 fps up is a no go with sli 7900 GTX outdoors?

Haven't got Oblivion mate.
I've held off getting it as I may get it with the Xbox 360 when I purchase one.

I've seen a good discount off the Home Cinema projector that I want as well.
So a 2nd card may be put off for a bit longer.

I can't decide ;)

A no-go in resolutions of 1280x960 and above from what I've seen. These results really don't add-up IMO though, not sure if they're recording averages or what.
