7970 Lightning, worth the premium?

I had it in the 16x/8x PCI-E last time!

Wanted to see if there was any noticeable difference

EDIT: cleared CMOS, flashed bios via usb still nothing. I killed my MB in 7 days? haha what a joke.

EDIT 2: Nevermind, I'd ruled out using a mDP to VGA connector before hand when it didnt work on my previous lightning but now this connector seems to work for whatever reason.

Probably caused by the last card not being able to support anything higher than 1900x1200.

Just remove the CPU reactor, MSI clearly stated that it is next to pointless for overclocking on air and only has real use with LN2.

Edit:

As my monitor is clearly on the blink and I've had it running hard for the last 3 years I'm not too surprised. I noticed my eyes are getting incredibly sore just looking at this screen after only a few minutes yet I can go into the other room and watch TV or even look at my friends monitor (which is identical) endlessly without a problem. Turned this monitor on today and the brightness was about half of what it should have been and it seems to have been gradually getting dimmer (brightness up at max) so I've accepted this monitors fate...

Anyway, I'm looking to get a 1440 monitor but I need an adapter since the Lightning card doesn't come with anything other than Mini DP and the monitors I am looking at only offer DVI D or HDMI ports, has anyone got any recommendations for what active converted I should be looking at? Anyone got any experiences with the Startech one OCUK are selling?

Have the one ocuk are selling to get 120hz, not sure if it's the card or adaptor but one of them causes random loss of display sometimes, as above it may be to do with my motherboard, moving from z68 to x79 may be a fix, I'll know for sure once my x79 bits arrive.

I've been following Vega's thread and a couple forums on 120hz.net and what I've gathered is if you want the 120hz at 1440p and stability go with this adapter http://www.accellcables.com/products/DisplayPort/DP/dp330_dvid.htm alongside a 24AWG dl dvi-d to dl-dvi-d cable.

Haven't read too many things about the startech adapter you speak of so I just decided to go with the accel mdp to dvi-d.

How much do they run in at? Might have to consider it if the problem persists with x79.

Unless the problem is down to it being USB powered, in which case I may mod it to run from a molex or something.

Price? that particular one is £123 via amazon.co.uk

If you mean what it pixel clock runs at then it's 330hz(2x165) but Vega has tested and proven that it can be overclocked to 400MHz+

I ordered from amazon.com though is it was £40 cheaper(£20 cheaper when they apply VAT at customs) and I'm not too bothered about the wait.

Also my new card has an ASIC of 59.5% haha I've had two ends of the scale now but wow this card does not get hot at all... have yet to see it exceed 52C

EDIT: Vega just ordered 2 lightnings for his current and expanding 3x catleap setup! exciting stuff

DP to mdp adapter? The Lightning has mdp so it would go lightning mdp > mdp to DVI-D adapter > DVI-D cable > Monitor DVI-D right?

And I can't really give you a personal opinion on the item as mine hasn't come yet. I'm going by someone else's opinion who has a lot more money than me to test these things out, but is doing the same kind of thing I am on a much smaller scale.

to add to my earlier post this is the translation of the notepad file included with After Burner Extreme

Version to use:

1.50 extreme: for the previous generation cards HD5870 and GTX480

1.51x extreme: for the HD5870

1.60 beta 4 extreme: for the GTX480, the shaders are linked with the core frequency (change the shaders change the gpu)

1.60 beta 6 extreme: for GTX460/470

So in short no 7970 support? I suppose it's not needed with the unlocked BIOS though?

Had a brainwave, take home a multimeter from work, read voltages direct from the card ;)

Plug it into your brain and you'll see those brain waves going mental!

Why is it that, I can get a score for 3dmark11performance/extreme preset, heaven bench everything max 1920x1080 yet I can't get a stable vantage bench at 1300/1800?

It just stops and takes me back to the desktop during part of second test, argh.

I'd also like to know why i can get 1206/1820 @ benches drop it to 1120/1600 for bf3 and it crashes within 5-10 mins, and if it does not crash dropping clocks to stock and then the game says " game disconected, something went wrong" never had any of these hassles with my 280gtx, all seems very inconsistent. I'm hoping that most of this is a driver issue, but it is one reason why i previously stuck with team green. The card plays every single player game flawlessly but c'mon who plays those. I wanna be online blowing people up with smooth framerates without being ejected and it crashing. Its one thing to have good benchmark scores but i bought this card to play the game i love, i cannot no longer DSR so i may put my 280 back in till drivers mature or whatever something went wrong cures itself. A week ago i was happy things were ok and now i get all this, no settings/drivers changed. Oh and i'm not blamming the card, with proper drivers i'm sure it would be outstanding, AMD sort it out.....
