7970 Lightning, worth the premium?

On the Lightning I just RMA'd, I was playing BF3 comfortably on ultra 1920x1080 4xmsaa and hbao at 80-120fps with 1175/1600mhz @ 1.150v but playing at 70C+

With my new Lightning I may be able to push it a lot further but at the same clocks I'm having to play @ 1.250v. Haven't played too much with it yet but 1.225 is too low so I'm assuming 1.250 is the sweet spot. Same BF3 settings the card games below 55C.

Don't forget to update your drivers to the newest beta ones, it seems new ones are appearing every week now
 
1260/1650 @ 1.25/1.649v so far for me :D

Still needs some heavier stressing, no issues in Kmark extreme so far though.

Edit: spoke too soon, folded after a few mins of heaven, back to the drawing board.

Yer see that's what I'm not understanding, how is that heaven is less stressful than vantage? : /

Still a nice score. Sadly I have to game at 1.25v which I'm not too cool with atm.

Multimeter! How would you determine which is which though? clock voltage or memory voltage?

EDIT: Vega ordered 4 of them...mother of god.

FOUR! wow he must have deep pockets.

I'm fairly sure it says in the info book thing that came with the card which read out port is for which voltage.
 
The crim, post#641 is that on multiplayer?? If it is, to get those fps i have to lose msaa and drop to sbao and change a few settings to high. Running 12.6 currently.
Over the weekend gonna concentrate on real world tests(bf3) most of us upgrade to a new card to play our fave game better and yes it looks prettier but whats the point when i cant always finish what i'm playing, tonight i got my highest score ever and was only half way through and it crashed, max temp in log 55c

Vantage is more stressful on the entire system not necessarily the graphics cards. Unigen is very good for cards only.

At the time on my old card I was hitting 80-120fps+ in doors and 55/60fps was the lowest it reached outdoors on Caspian border 64man but at at like 75c+ ultra/4xmsaa/HBAO

New card same thing just lower temps and higher volts, but yesterday I was gaming 50/55C now its risen to peek 67C not sure why.

I haven't been tweaking with games the past 2 weeks it's been all benches

Currently using an old monitor 1920x1080 - mDP > VGA

EDIT: Do you still have an i5 2500k? scratch that I'm back to 50/55C gaming, had fan set to 25% constant.

yep still on i5 2500k
not on premium, will only buy the expansion packs i want

and i'm not quite sure whats failing, i hope its drivers but thats not helping anything as i cant do a thing about that other than wait. Thing is i waited this long to upgrade my card and when it works its good, but its wrong really to be able to buy something that does not work correctly, i dont mind lower performance until drivers mature but crashing is unacceptable.
I bought this card based on a few factors
1.the excellent ocuk promo price
2.the looks
3.like to have a little OC with new hardware
4.from reviews and reading forums there were less issues with team red at the time for bf3(no stuttering) albeit slightly lower frames, but once oc'ed should get quite close to a 680.
oh and 5. the extra memory may help a little for futureproofing
 
Briefly read over your thread. What is your cards ASIC rating?

My last lightning couldn't reach the same volts as my current but ran at lower volts at the same clocks.

First Lightning = 83.9% ASIC stock was 1.05v
Current Lightning = 59.8% stock was 1.15v

I don't know much about PSU' but my 2 cents are that your card just can't handle those volts and is better off at lower volts and thus air cooling which probably means you have a pretty high ASIC rating? or it's your CPU.

True, we also don't know the temp limits on the vrm or memory, cool vrm's draw less power than hot so range may be increased. Hopeful these blocks get released in the next few weeks, they seem to be low priority atm.
 
Turned my on screen display for GPU voltage and it's saying 1.170v I'm still baffled by this.

Bug or cap?

EDIT: it's showing my true GPU voltage in OSD now but not my true mem voltage.

Not sure tbh, forgot to pick up a multimeter!!! damnit, will be on my agenda for monday so we can determine what is giving the correct voltage read out, as it is GPUZ/GPUShark read out 1.170v, AB shows 1.174v and AB OSD 1.18v. IIRC Trixx also reads out 1.170v but won't allow any voltage adjustments.

You tried tweaking the user.cfg for bf3? is that allowed?

Or do you want overall better performance?

Well my OSD is reading correctly now but i don't know if thats false too

EDIT: O god I caved in and bought the Recon Shortcut kit! I need me SV98! sexy sexy bolt action

not tweaked the .cfg in bf3, what does it do????

just want it not to crash!!!

right i installed 12.7, cleanned off old files, running @1125 at 1250v, repaired battlefield installation files and so far so good, managed to play 3 full games and no crash. maybe get one more in before i go out for a ruby, gotta have a curry on my birthday!!!

Haven't looked too much into it, neither have I edited my own but it's for those who want to more finely tune their graphics settings.

I actually went into CCC - Gaming - 3D Application Settings and noticed AA mode wasn't set to max(Super -sample AA) and triple buffering wasn't ticked. Not sure if bf3 overrides CCC but its decreased my fps in game with 4xmsaa and HBAO on to around 40fps+ outdoors but everything looks so beautiful on my ****** screen. But hey it could just be placebo...
