7970 vs 680 thread.

So the card was originally destined to be the 670..big deal. If you want to cry at anybody regarding the price/performance then cry to AMD for setting the bench so low this round in the price/performance dept. From what i see both cards offer similar benchs and the 680 wins in the finer details, better power consumption, cooler and quiet...in other words all the things people say they want from their cards. I am waiting for the Daddy Keplar to surface as there will hopefully be a bigger performance increase on last years cards.

Daddy Kepler? I thought the 680 was the daddy?

hmmm do i got 480 sli or 680 gtx single? if i go 680 gtx what do guys think the going rate is for an asus 480 gtx still under warranty from feb 2011 thats never been taken past stock speeds?

The 680 is IMO the best card since the 9700Pro. It brings a huge hike in performance per watt and offers just about every moderm feature available. It's price does not make it a bad card, just a damn expensive evolutional card. Now, if it was released at the pricepoint it was designed for ($299-$349), it would have gone down as the best card ever. But alas, the GTX670 was renamed GTX680 and $150 was added to the price.

This is a massively good card, just overpriced and incorrectly named. You can bet AMD will be copying some of it's features for it's next design release (if they can be added in time). We can also be sure that GK110 will be a performance goliath, offering all that GK104 does, but ~50% moreso.

Are you pulling my twanger mate?

Seriously, you did nothing but harp on and on... and on slating the 7970 for the performance/price:

AMD would not be able to use the 3GB VRAM as an EXCUSE to charge ASTRONOMICAL prices for AVERAGE next gen cards.

The truth is that neither the 7950 nor 7970 offers a good enough "next gen performance boost" to justify the high pricing compared to previous gen cards.

I'll keep the best for last though:

I wanted to jump to the 7970 this time around, but the price is just too high, or rather the performance is not what I wanted for the price.

I don't think that I am a fanboy, although I do express my opinions and at the moment they are anti-AMD from a price/performance point of view.

I wanted a good reason to upgrade my GTX580, but AMD have not given me one. If Kepler turns out to be just as poor I will deal NVidia equal or more criticism for keeping us waiting so long.

All that banging about the 7970 being overpriced(when clock for clock they are both meh imo for the money) when it's in fact cheaper in the UK.

Admittedly in fairness you slipped a tiny bit in that the 680 is too pricey, but how it becomes a fantastic card when, to the true enthusiast oc'er they both perform very similar indeed, that there can be no denying of by any non brand loyalty user in the forum.

You can take the Nvidia Police jacket off and hang it up now, it's bed time mate.:D

Oh in case you are wondering, if I was buying today and they were both priced the same, it would be a green card in my rig.:p

some amd fanboys foolishly believe that every 7970 will hit 1250 on core. the reality is much different

Exactly, most 7970s likely wont even reach 1100 Mhz before becoming unstable.

Nvidias GPU boost on the GTX 680 works on everysingle card, AMD's max overclock will vary from one card to the next.

Holy **** man this thing friggin owns!

I really want one now... My 6870 struggles so bad at 1920x1080 High with 0xAA on certain 64 player maps :(

A 680 would give me butter smooth gaming. AMD just got absolutely owned!!!

Check this silly review. Take it with a pinch of salt what they said ... AMD must be sending out cheques again to review people. A GTX 580 runs slower on this review than a 5870 on your review and at lower resolution and a 6970 beats a 580 in an Nvidia optimised game like BF3 .

To be honest harping on about price / performance ratios is just pointless at the moment. We can all see the 680 is the better card, though not by much when oc is considered. So AMD will see this and no doubt drop prices, hell even Nvidia might follow to be competitive on pricing. The fact is no-one will deny the pricing structure will be very different in 1 week. Then like with the 6970 vs the 580 it will be worth considering price / performance and if the difference is anything like £50 it will be worth considering.

Thing that has really annoyed me recently has been the constant criticism of AMD for the price of their card by almost every reviewer/ critic and the wait and see attitude they have all adopted in advising what to buy. And yet now with the similar priced 680, no wait a week and see the prices fall....nope they basically scream buy it now!!! So many fan boys...so few bargain hunters....tis sad.

If anyone is interested. I have two 7970 windforce cards.

Both clocked to 1150 core 1600 memory.

Heaven gives me a score of 4065 as per OCUKs settings.

AVF bench I get 235 fps average.

Oh and to all the haters I paid £400 each for them.

All in all very happy with them and will last a good few years :p
