7990 Custom Bios - Remove Throttling

whoooah whooah whoooah,

Matt

No one is blaming your BIOS. If you read what is written then it can be said the same for stock. I am still running your BIOS - it makes sense and it works wonderfully.

We are just in the thread asking others for feedback, help and advice - we dont expect you to be here all the time for answers. But please dont cane us when we are asking Q's between ourselves.

There is much cross thread discussion between here and the 7990 owners forum has as much about the BIOS flash as this thread.

On another note. I think it is the BF4 patch that has walloped the fps. For those quoting excellent fps from the 7990 please re-test your findings as it is all to easy to quote old fps from current reality. Mine still plays well but the fps has dropped. If other games etc benchmark the same then all is well and it is BF4 patch - please report back findings.

Best

A few of us replied already - running windows 8.1 at 2560 x 1600 Res on ULTRA setting preset I get 80 - 90 plus FPS depending on the map and whats happening. My card is also not overclocked either. Using the latest afterburners beta. The rest of my PC is in my sig

Just making it clear that any issues you may have are not down to the bios. There is simply nothing there that could cause such an issue. :)

LtMatt, thanks for your previous help and input

What is fact is that when I flashed your BIOS my BF4 performance halved. I changed nothing else. Reinstalled same drivers.

I could flip the BIOS switch back to stock and it was back to 130-140fps so could see the difference. This was not placebo. I'm not saying it's the BIOS. It's a setting in something else. Now oddly I get barely any difference between BIOS's when looking at AB graphs. My GPU graphs in AB look the same where as before the stock BIOS was much more errtic and fluctuating. I was having terrible issues with installing the drivers at this time using driver sweeper and fusion. Often teking numerous attepts for an install. Tried all fixes such as certificates. Only way I solved this was by using DDU uninstaller which now allows me a full install without errors everytime. But I still cant get my performance back. This uninstaller may have done a very deep clean and removed something I havent reinstalled yet. ( NNow thinking about Direct x)

I have changed my PSU out and BF4 has had a patch. I have reinstalled windows. So there is plenty of things there to form an issue and I'm just trying to work it out. I don't think it is the BIOS as it is hardware. But software needs to talk to hardware and so maybe I'm missing something - just dunno. Got me stumped.

I was empathising with Rykane as he also had low performance from a 7990 and was hoping for some guru to maybe chuck a thought that fixes our problem. It certainly wasnt aimed at discrediting your BIOS. I know nothing about BIOS's and there seems to be many AB settings that people are tweaking around the flash in AB/CCC. I must just have a setting or two that I've gotten wrong.

Currently I've just got ULPS disabled via registry and +20% power in CCC. Performance is the same in Stock and V3 BIOS - bar throttling. GPU usauge graphs look the same. I've changed my PSU to draw from 2 ports instead of one. No difference to BF4 perf.

my thinking at the moment is maybe Direct X isn't up to date as I thought maybe it would come as part of windows updates - or BF4.

Any input welcome - thanks in advance

Woodsta

I'm stumped mate sorry, no idea what to suggest. You seem to be in the minority.

BF4 runs at a constant 125fps on 2560x1440 on Ultra with no AA & 104% scaling.

There's been a couple of patches to BF4 lately and I certainly saw a sharp drop in FPS at one point, but it seems to have resolved itself in the later patches.

I saw your scores from before phunky and thats about right with no AO or AA. They both make a significant performance hit. Though a 1440p monitor requires a fair old extra horepower to process.

It's cores like Azrael 1 saying 90fps at 1600p ultra with everything on. Mine is 1200p with stuff turned off getting 70-80 and a 1600p is nearly twice the pixel density to a 1200p monitor.

The game plays fine at 70-80 and is still smooth and very playable. it just aint at the 130fps I had when I jumped to W8.1. Even W7 was 90-100.

I'm sure this will work itself out in the end. And I'll prolly never be able to put my finger on what it was that fixed it!!! Sigh:eek:

Just had a quick blast on ultra at 2560x1440 and was getting between 83-105fps in most places on a 40man server.

Would drop to 50-60 in close combat fire fights (10 players+) with lots of smokes and explosives and ramp up to 135 in more open areas.

Expect though really with 4xAA on this res!

Sorry I didn't think I had to state 100% accurate measurements... But for me running around a 64 man server with my FPS capped at 125 I never visually noticed them drop while running into mass fire fights.

Sure maps and locations made a big difference and will have drops in some situations, but for the majority of the time while observing them it was at 125fps.

Hi LtMatt, Thank you very much for the bios, I have successfully flashed my 7990 and its working great. Your time and effort are truly appreciated! Have a great Christmas :)

Hi

I flashed my bios last night (following first post) but I'm not sure if it worked... I'm mining litecoins so I can see any performance increase/decrease straight away...

the card only runs faster if I give it less volts... so I'm assuming it's still throttling... on stock volts any overclock (cpu or ram) actually makes it run slower...
(it even runs faster if I leave everything stock and just decrease the volts)

ASCI quality is 65.9%

rom's I'm running right now

any chance you can point me in the right direction ?

I'm watercooled - I need to check my waterblock because one core hits 70'C at full load while the other only gets to 43'C but even at 70 I should be well within limits ?
(water is always cold)

thanks

Alan.

Can't help you with mining dude. Sometimes less is more with regards to mining. To see if the card is throttling while gaming check how my thread here. Look for the advanced method and setup overlays and check to see if gpu usage drops while running games/benchmarks.

Hey guys , what software I can use to edit Bios form my Gigabyte 7990 ?
RadeonBios v1.28 editor is not supporting 79xx gpu familly . :(

update:

I have found info about VBE7 bios editor
http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/vbe7-vbios-editor-for-radeon-hd-7000-series-cards.189089/

ubersonic
700KH/s per GPU on a stock with gpu 1000MHz Mem 1500MHz is a good average
for example
One of my miners with ambient temperatures 15'C 2x7990 1040MHz / 1500MHz = WU= 2600KH/s , Average 2760KH/s

HI there

I've just purchased myself a HD 7990. :)
Just flashed this none throttle BIOS, scores in Heaven are up quite a lot, so its a good BIOS.

But I am only getting around 660 Hash per GPU, so around 1300 hash rate on this card.

What are your voltage/clock speeds and mining settings please for 7990?

P.S. Found sweet spot of 1040Mhz Core and 6000Mhz memory, getting 690 hash per GPU, so nearly 1400 hash for the card. :)

Thanks Gibbo, this is my bios.

I found on my 7990 at stock (1000/1500) and with power limit at +50% i was getting 700 hash per core or just under. So overall i was getting 1400 hash or just under. Voltage was around 1.150v i think.
