85 year old woman mauled to death in her own garden

I do agree yes that this is right.

My concern is that people have a "not my dog he a good boy" kind of dismissive demeanour right up until disaster strikes. Their love blinds them.
Dangerous dogs are entirely unacceptable, and this country has a serious problem with looking the other way in the light of incidents like this.

Maybe not something so Draconian, but more needs to be done for sure.

That's true to an extent as at the end of the day dogs are dogs. At the same time though, Dogs are absolutely a product of their environment.

Like certain types of other animals though I do think that owners should have to go through some sort of fit for ownership check . . . the notion that everyone should automatically have the right to a dog is daft in itself.

"dangerous dogs" are 99% preventable - it's bad ownership that causes it.

I disagree having first hand experience with pit bulls.
Bad ownership is certainly part of it in some cases.
These chavs choose aggressive breeds intentionally

Has to be one of the most horrific ways to die... savaged by dogs. Fed up of people anthropomorphising things. They're animals, they can't be reasoned with, they will forever be unpredictable because you can't possibly understand how it feels (if it even does feel in the same way humans do).

I would want the appropriate dog(s) and owner(s) to be punished, not every dog owner within some arbitrary distance. The dogs in this case should be put down and the owner should go to prison, which it seems like you agree with.
I agree. Especially the owners. I had a dog when I was about 12 when I got it. Very gentle. I was visiting friends and they had their dog - nasty snarling beast. The interesting thing was my dog and the other beast were from the same litter. That's owners for you.

He's literally said it doesn't need to affect anyone's current dog, instead to start phasing dangerous breeds out by not allowing them to breed any more. Not sure you entirely understand what genocide means...

So if someone suggested that we neuter all white people, stopping them breeding, but didn’t kill any white people currently alive, instead just letting all this last generation die, that wouldn’t be genocide?

Dogs aren't people, so it's not genocide.

You do realise that certain dogs breeds are already banned without licence? Whether you want to call it genocide or not, they aren't allowed to exist here.

Persons are intelligent and have few natural instincts - at least for the most part, I can't speak for all present company.
Dog breeds were created by people, in some cases their dangerous instincts deliberately brought to the forefront. It's our responsibility to deal with breeds which are not fit for modern life.

Horrific :(.

Although there's always a chance that any dog of any breed however nice could potentially attack someone if they get triggered in just the wrong way, worth remembering that in general dog behaviour is based on how they've been trained and treated by their owner. Therefore suspect owner is a horrible person and hope he goes to prison.

Edit: Birmingham mail article has this:

Think that answers how they were treated by the owner and what kind of dog he wanted them to be :(

It's very rarely the dogs fault, it's almost always the owner and how the dogs have been raised.

They are animals and if kept in a shed their whole life they are not going to be nice dogs.

A certain type of person selectively breeds aggressive dogs for illegal purposes mainly.
Have you seen the pit bull / grey hound cross or lurcher cross?
Utterly terrifying beasts.
Pit bulls are actually quite sober compared with sight hounds like grey hounds.
The two mixed is pretty terrifying.

This is definitely a horrific incident which resulted in the death of a defenceless old woman :(.
I’ve had a few ex gfs that had dogs and I’m not a dog fan by any means. Hell even the small little ones scare the **** out of me especially when I was younger. Now not so much but I have to agree that dogs are ill mannered/vicious due to their owners mistreating them.
One of my ex’s had a staffie and he was the biggest softie ever. Never once growled at me or her 3 yr old daughter.

Hope the owner gets nailed for this.
