8800GT Ramblings Thread

Two different cards bcame out of stock in the space of a couple of minutes while I was trying to order mine. I had to settle on a Leadtek for £176.

I am curious as to how many other 640MB 8800GTS owners are getting a GT. I can get £160 for my GTS so the upgrade with transport will cost £20. I hope I will not regret this.

Doing the same thing mate.

These cards are so hard to get, I called up the place where I ordered mine as they said they were in stock but my order got delayed. Apparently they are in today and they have got so many people already holding on for them!

What kind of improvement would I expect to see?

An absolute huge one, the GT is only a couple or so frames slower than the GTX, and thats with AA/AF, now these have come out at those prices, they have rendered the GTX/Ultra worthless, unless you game at uber resolutions on 30 inchers or something, as there is no point paying £300+/400+ for a card when you can get another one for £150+ that is just as fast, the big Nv have done an amazing job, hence why my 320mb GTS is geting replaced with one.:cool:

The difference will be monumental, GTX performance your getting with these cards give or take a fame, totally decimates the x1900, and im assuming it will fit in your case as its the same length as your x1900, which is same length as the GTS, about 9 inches. :)

You cant fault Nvidia's drivers now, they releasing a new set every couple of days now, back on the ball driver wise now they are, back to the days of old where they were the dogs danglies at em. :D

Sorry I haven't read all 35 pages but for anyone with one of these, what's the stock cooler like? Looks like it has the potential to be pretty noisy and I love the quiet cooler on my 880gts!

Just got my BFG. Poor software bundle (ie, non), just a box with a card in it basically. It also sounds almost as noisy as a Tornado on takeoff - well perhaps thats an exageration but it's noticeably noisier than the BFG 8800GTS it has replaced. It's annoying.

Anyone? - re X1900
I'm in the same boat (X1900XT 512Mb at XTX speeds), but am still not convinced that it's work upgrading at this point. It really depends what games you play and resolution you're at. For instance, I'm gaming at 1280x1024 currently and my VP930 flatscreen is at 60Hz.

This review has some comparisons at that resolution,

CoH : 1900XTX=59.3, 8800GT=74.5 - current card sufficient
Far Cry: 1900XTX=158, 8800GT=200 - current card sufficient
FEAR : 1900XTX=94, 8800GT=126 - current card sufficient
Prey : 1900XTX=83, 8800GT=102 - current card sufficient
Quake4 : 1900XTX=67, 8800GT=90 - current card sufficient
Stalker : 1900XTX=104, 8800GT=157 - current card sufficient
SupCom: 1900XTX=36, 8800GT=51 - Ah ha - could be worth upgrading...

Unfortunately this doesn't cover some of the games I'm playing now - NWN2, Shivered Isles or have in my "to play" stack - Bioshock, HL2:Ep2. Granted most of these titles are quite old and the GT could probably turn the eye-candy up further, but the cost to upgrade for me doesn't seem worth it until I replace the monitor.

Personally, I'll dig around for better comparisons with more relevant games to me in particular before making a decision, and will also wait for the RV670 release and reviews.

Is that noisy at idle, I hope not

Actually I'm beginning to think it might not be the card, it's definately noisier than it was before I turned it off yesterday and took my GTS off but Abit uGURU has stopped reporting CPU temp to me, and it looks like the CPU fan is on full all the time..

I wish I could tell you but I am just recovering from my first ever forum ban:D

Those games you mention will run and look great on your current card, I would hold off until you find something that qill actually make use of the 8800gt.

Mine makes a loud whoosh when its swtiched on but when it gets to booting vistsa is quiet. Its only noisy for the first few secs of bootup

I agree theres not much software as you say, not even a free teeshirt
