edit: there is a few bios updates (release was ver: F2, now on F5, and the F3 update specifically mentions memory performance) so maybe that might be worth a shot

right cheers, it seems to pass all the all the orthos tests with both sticks of ram in now. The error's I'm getting seem so random though and inconsistent.

someone else told me that as a last resort i could update the bios, but he didn't recomend it because if the system's a bit flakey anyway and it crashes during the bios flash then you're ******.

how exactly do you update the bios anyway?

Well I'll take a flier. Last year I had some Corsair RAM that ran perfectly well on an Intel mobo but when I swapped the RAM to a new AMD system, I got all sorts of errors, blue screens and lockups in games.

On the suggestion from a forum I tried downclocking the Corsair RAM on the AMD system and all my problems vanished. I replaced the Corsair RAM with similarly specced Patriot RAM and was able to run this perfectly well at its default and overclocked settings.

There was nothing wrong with the Corsair RAM but it was incompatible with the AMD mainboard at its default settings. You could try underclocking your memory by one notch. I repeat this is a flyer as others here have given you most of the mainstream advice for your problem.

I would comment that by choosing the 64 bit version of Vista you have chosen a much more problematic OS than the vanilla 32 bit version of XP. At present you get only marginal, if any, benefits from Microsoft's latest and greatest, complete with the "hunt the driver" feature.

already tried downclocking it, looseing timings, it passes memtest at the standard settings, and downclocked.

my vista install seems to be stable now, and I have ran every test I know of.

but when I install games or any apps, it keeps saying that the file has become corrupted, and error's reading the disk.

and i get the same problems in my copy of 32-bit xp pro.
 
i'd really try getting hold of another hard drive to try, just to eliminate the hard drive from the equation

A BIOS update would be my first port of call though, however i dont know how to do it correctly using a usb pen drive as you dont have a floppy drive do you?, its been far too long since i've done a BIOS update myself

Maybe a quick google or someone on here might be able to help you out with regard to that

no i don't have a floppy. but what would a bios ipdatea actually achieve?
 
well a bios update can help with compatibility with hardware, i.e. update the motherboard to be more compatible with different brands of RAM, newer CPU's, help with stability, performance etc

hmm ok i'll read into it. but im told that if something goes wrong during the bios flash, then you can't get the old one back or anything, so i was a bit worried about doin this.

Sorry to hear your problems mate. Very unfortunate. The easy way would be to send it to get sorted or pop in pcworld (sry ocuk but they do repair stuff and there all over so easy to get to) and get them to look at it for you.

I thought the mem was the prob and probably still is, but im woundering on the cpu. Instability can be caused by this as well you see like lack of volts. So make sure its at proper volts or even up the volts 0.25 to see if it stabalizes a bit.

The hdd does sound dodgy, either the drive itself or the connectors on the mb or the cables.

If you have on site warrenty call them out to your home and get them to fix it while u watch.

When you say pc world do you mean the tech guys? because you usually have to wait ages in a queue to see them at my local.

everything is at correct volts, and I've ran memtest86 for 6 hours without any errors, so could it still be the ram at fault?

I've also tryed different sata cables, I was wondering if the mobo could be faulty, faulty ports, or voltage controll or something?

Ignore pcworld advice i read a report on crap repair jobs. Instead try to find someone close who knows a bit about computers and has experiance building them from parts etc. And see if they can help.

Im guessing its a few things wrong with ** pc, 1 the mb which is the sata ports for the hdd tho not all should be faulty. 2 the ram, perhaps the type is wrong that u bought or are just duds. 3. If not them then it may be the vista install disc thats boogered up i.e scratched or has damage not visable which might need replacing.

Btw whats ** full spec as in first post u said look at sig well its a pic with no details so duno what ** spec is. Can you perhaps say and how its configured and perhaps do a dxdiag report and some cpuz screenies of cpu and ram and some pics of bios of all screens there to see if its all configured right. And double check jumpers and ports and all that stuff on ** motherboard make sure its all connected proper. And just take out all ** cards and mem and put them back in and make sure there in just to be sure there no problem with seating of said hardware.

Also if u happen to know a mate who will let u use their pc to test each bit of hardware i.e ram transfer, check if ok put back in, then gfx card etc.

I don't really know anybody that will be able to help that i know.

you it could be a scratched vista install disk, but i have used my xp disk on this system and i get the same problems, it seems unlikely that both disks are knackered.

I cannot get CPU-z to install it corrupts on install. ram volts are at 1.9v, and timings at 4-4-4-12, everything else is at default.

It is late now, and I absolutly shattered so I'll reseat everything tomorow, and take some pics of the bios for you.

Hmm can you try a new dvd drive perhaps the one ** using is boogered and is reading discs wrong hence corrupt installs. You did say you used xp and vista discs so if its not the discs then it could be the device reading them. Either a mechanical issue or a power/cable issue.

I already tryed using an old ide dvd-rom drive and had the same problems.
 
Hmm. well er if its not the drive and its defo not the discs which u think are fine then it can only be 3 things i would put money on is the prob. Like has been said.

1. mb theres somit wrong with perhaps the connectors or doesnt like the config u have done with the type of ram with other parts or somit.

2. the ram either isnt running proper i.e volts like ok it may be set to 1.9v in bios but it might be undervolting so raise it to 2.0 volts or it might be the timings. Or they arnt in the right config for dual channel or somit so need to swap em about or somit.

3. The hdd, probably most likelist cause. Try finding a quick cheap hdd on members market or from a mate and try install windows on it and all that and see if the correuption is still there.

ram is in dual channel mode, both ram sticks are in the same colour slots. all connectors are installed correctly.

setting ram to 2.0v won't kill them will it?

and bearing in mind it has run memtest for 6 hours with no errors, and orthos blend for a few hours erroerless.

I also ran the wd bootable diagnotic tool and it displayed no errors.

I have an old 80GB ide drive, i'll try wit that. although I'm not sure on it's condition though.
 
Make sure ** WD hdd is operating in the sata 2 format tho im not sure if theres jumpers to adjust on sata drives i personally havent used one before yet.

2.0 volts wont kill the ram just dont tell crucial tho cos they dont support going past 1.9v.

Also if ** brave enough i would try a bios update it could be the saviour of ** problems. Tho just curious what revision ** on now. And we can check if a update that might help be available by checkin the notes of the recent bios revisions.

Btw best to run orthos for 8 hrs not just a few hours. And mem test needs a good 8 hrs minimum id say. Another quick test of mem i find is winrar and using the benchmark feature on latest version. Finds errors quick that does.
