970's having performance issues using 4GB Vram - Nvidia investigating

I was wondering why i was getting stutter in a few games at 1440p on my ROG Swift, thought it may have been sli. FarCry 4 was a pain for it.

Never had an issue with my 980.

Hmm i've owned both cards for 12 days, do i use OcUK's 14 day money back guarantee. Decisions decisions...

i thought the faults with FC 4 were poor game coding/ bugs, i think you'll find they are....

Ranger, do us all a favour and dial it down a LOT. You seem to offer these forums nothing but a bad attitude tbh.

Maybe it's just something we're all missing in the translation, or it might just be a cultural thing.

Was I replying to you? No.

You seem to be one of the many, many idiots in this thread. Please do not reply or quote me again, thanks.

Seems you need to take your own advice, no need for the idiot comment.

I gained increase GPU performance, an extra 500MB of (usable) RAM and reduced heat output (that let me go SLI without needing to upgrade my water loop) for free lol.

Fixed ;)

Nah mate, you gained 500mb of RAM at barely over half the speed of your 780 + another 500 thats at like 20-30GB/s. And bad drivers that make you stutter, or was that the card? :o:p

Lol, you guys are amazing, okay firstly here is the amount of VRAM used on my system when I'm just sitting on the desktop:

gtx970a.gif

As you can see I have my GTX970's main 3584mb fully available plus 146mb of the "slow" 512mb zone left. With my GTX780 I would have had 2706mb of total VRAM left.

Now here's my system with Battle.net and Chrome running (standard for me even when in a game).

gtx970.gif

As you can see, my GTX970 will have 3458mb free (just starting to dip into the "good" RAM), at this point my GTX780 would have had 2434mb free to start gaming. So the last 512mb being slower on the GTX970 is completely irrelevant for me :)

I am aware as somebody else posted that I could reduce my usage by running the Windows 95 classic shell, closing all background programs and setting whatevers open to not use GPU acceleration if it has that option. But I prefer to run my system normally as I am just gaming not hunting benchmark records or anything.

I am very happy with my GTX970 rig just like I am with my R9 290 rig, and none of you party poopers are going to make me feel bad /rasp :P

Thread is awesome.. ;)

Nvidia have well and truly ****ed this up.

4GB it should be no matter what!

Imagine buying 16GB memory stick only to find the last 4GB is borked and will give performance issues!

Popcorn time on this one. ;)

That's miles away, i remember hitting the 2019MB mark with 2048MB of vram many times without issue.

But saying that 4GB is borderline now, BF4 Ultra everything 4xMSAA and 200% resolution scale @ 1080p on the plasma (awesome btw :D) i can just about tip over the 4096MB Vram and get some stuttering, but lucky i dont like everything Ultra as i think its a disadvantage.

hi same here, you cant beat a good plasma can you ;)

the quality of the games has improved massively recently, even Sniper Elite 3 looks as good as the first Crysis, this running out of RAM at 4GB has sneaked up on us in the last 4 months, because i cant remember it being an issue when the 970 came out.

Same as you....even SE 3 has some of its settings backed off from Ultra, because to be honest you dont really notice them, you only really notice :- poor textures then Contrast, colour, brightness and sharpness and finally Stuttering !

I'm not surprised Newegg is taking them back without charge.

I lived in the USA for a decade and they take consumer laws really seriously.

How any one can sit there and excuse Nvidia and just roll over is beyond me. They broke consumer laws with false advertising, they absolutely have to put things right no matter how much the liberals among us wish they could just sweep it under the carpet and make it all go away.

FFS, grow a set, you've been ripped off !!!!

The quicker NVidia make a statement regarding refunds etc the better. All the qq'ing here is ****ing tedious, the sooner you guys sell up/refund and go to AMD the better.

You won't get 'em on the 4GB ram (because it does actually contain 4GB), but you should get them on the ROPs/Cache advertisement :)

Absolutely dude. I said earlier that the 4gb argument would be very dubious, because they do indeed contain 4gb vram.

However like you've said, the ROPs were clearly mis-advertised.

Let's put it like this. Newegg are the biggest PC retailer in the USA. They must have sold thousands upon thousands of 970s. They wouldn't just say "hey send them back !" without first seeking serious legal advice. The fact they're saying send them back just says it all. I used to buy from them all the time and they friggin stiffed me out of a restocking fee every bloody time I sent something back.

And whether we like it or not exactly the same thing is going to happen here. A guy sent OCUK a webnote about the issue, they said "RMA it".
