970's having performance issues using 4GB Vram - Nvidia investigating

Yeah i ran that silly benchmark, my 970 started to drop off around the 2.9gb.
FC4 is the most demanding game i have installed, sue me. Just loaded it up, maxed setting MSAA8x it uses according to MSI AB 3855mb, defo running out of VRAM. Hitching and plummeting FPS to <5fps etc. MSAA4x and avg around 30fps and back to normal amounts of FC4 stuttering lol.

i need to finish that game sometime
im saved about half way thru, i did nearly all the hunting stuff tho
hope i saved some elephant missions :)

I've played it a few hours, even on lowest settings it was still unplayable.
They never fixed the stuttering, so gave up.

Wanted to see if i could replicated that video from this thread, i didn't.
3855mb with MSAA8x, 3750mb with MSAA4x. Scone reckons his 980 does the same thing @8x, probably means the 970 has 4gb usable like Nvidia said ;)

Didn't they post something a while back that shows the 500mb of ram is margin on error slower so...nothing to fret about?

Cancelled my pre-order, twas an impulse buy any way, and I need that money for my trip to SA really.

Sorry Nvidia, you may have lost me back to AMD if the 3xxs are any cop.

i not tried with latest version yet ><

yeh but that was posted by nvidia
their only response so far
i think this might drag on in the news.... way after we all bored of it
its got to appear in all the weekly youtubes

See this on Techpowerup...

The funny part about it is thinking logically if I needed a card tomorrow based on what I have read in this thread I would have no problem grabbing the GTX 970 without a second thought.

If anyone does not believe me, remember I have a couple of GTX 960s coming tomorrow.:)

Well I hope there's more Nvidia lovers who think like you. It will allow me to sell mine easier once the new AMD cards come out. ;)

On a serious note The Nvidia response means they won't accept any fault so we are stuck with it unless and until someone comes out with some software that can test the memory and prove or disprove that the card is gimped.

Just tested my strix in Far Cry 4 at 2k. It runs butter smooth on ultra until I hit the 2.9gb usage then I get massive frame dips. Exactly the same as my test results with the benchmark tool REC.exe

I'm sure this has been mentioned before but this is Nvidia's take on things. Does not really explain how the issue is not present on 980M which is more similar to the 970 than 980 desktop.

“The GeForce GTX 970 is equipped with 4GB of dedicated graphics memory. However the 970 has a different configuration of SMs than the 980, and fewer crossbar resources to the memory system. To optimally manage memory traffic in this configuration, we segment graphics memory into a 3.5GB section and a 0.5GB section. The GPU has higher priority access to the 3.5GB section. When a game needs less than 3.5GB of video memory per draw command then it will only access the first partition, and 3rd party applications that measure memory usage will report 3.5GB of memory in use on GTX 970, but may report more for GTX 980 if there is more memory used by other commands. When a game requires more than 3.5GB of memory then we use both segments.

We understand there have been some questions about how the GTX 970 will perform when it accesses the 0.5GB memory segment. The best way to test that is to look at game performance. Compare a GTX 980 to a 970 on a game that uses less than 3.5GB. Then turn up the settings so the game needs more than 3.5GB and compare 980 and 970 performance again.”

If the issue is real, which appears to be the case, there's no way in hell I'm keeping this card for much longer. I'll probably switch back to AMD when they release the 380x/390x. Bummer, I wanted to stick with the 970 for a while but experiencing a hitchfest whenever the card uses more than 3.5gb vram is a massive no-no.

There is loads of software available to test this, unfortunately people are not using it. They are called games and there are thousands of them to choose from.:D

If only NVidia had printed on the 970 boxes "this card can not run dodgy benchmarks" then everyone would be happy.:)

Very unwise if you are worried about memory problems.

If the rumours are true and the 380X comes with HBM you may get more than you bargain for, as these cards will probably be the first to use it I suspect there are going to be teething problems and some of them could be far more serious than anything to do with the 970.
