970's having performance issues using 4GB Vram - Nvidia investigating

Moving on... I did ask this earlier but the question might have got lost but what games are people seeing the VRAM going above 3.5GB and what is happening to them?

Just been reminded why I don't have this on my AMD PC

The drivers are awful, hopefully there are only NVidia users in this thread.:D

Single 290X
SoM
1080p maxed
Stuttery mess

Edit do I start a law suit against AMD because the game runs worse on my fully functional 290X than it does on a broken 970.:D

Thanks Kaap and interesting findings. It isn't that great on my Titans at 1440P but it is very playable and the odd stutter (feels like running in mud) now and then.

never seen kaap fighty before! :D

Not fighty at all

I posted that last comment to highlight how silly some of the posts in this thread are getting.

The GTX 970 is a very good card and yet people are writing it off.

The 290X is also a very good card but it is good at different things to the 970s and 980s.

All graphics cards will be designed and built with some compromises, they will never be perfect and users need to accept this.

Now about the price tag and the crap 384bit bus on the Maxwell Titan.........

:D:D:D:D

Have you tried running on all your Titans.

I did notice with mine at high resolution a single Titan was pretty stuttery but using all 4 made things a lot smoother even if the fps did not get that high.

yeh i agree, everyone is just guessing anyway
there's going to be a lot more people wrong with their theories than right
can share the butthurt out equally!
u are welcome to disagree with me anytime i dont get ****y lol

So, what I'm reading on the Nvidia forums and elsewhere, in terms of what people are saying, can be summed up thus below... and it SOUNDS like a good argument, but is this totally incorrect...?

Basically, the 970 was sold as having 4GB of VRAM at 224Gbps, as seen in their official specifications. Is that true? Because it would APPEAR (based on certain tests which may be wrong) that the VRAM is essentially divided in to two... one 3.5GB running @ 224 Gbps and one 512MB @ at 52Gbps. Is this totally false?

Just wish someone would hurry up and prove things one way or another for certain.

Either want a third 970 or am going triple 8gb 290.

Ooooooorrrr, as am likely not going to have massive amounts of time for much of anything besides elite dangerous, maybe just go down to one card til the next lot are out.

No Kaap, I have one lane switched off because 3 Titans and G-Sync wasn't a good combination :D I did run it as a PhysX card for a bit but that was pointless as well.

People are not guessing and are doing testing to show what is what and the post I did ealrier with the graphs showed that 4GB is being used and made no difference to framerates.

one 2min test with no reference id call still guessing
but like i said it depends which part trying to prove

its guessing in how it shows up atleast!!?

If the extra .5GB isn't usable, it would show up in the frames immediately. It doesn't and you can clearly see there isn't any detrimental effects to SoM that he tested on. If he ran the test for 2 hours, that would still be the same and it is the best evidence shown so far. People need to start supplying evidence that proves that 3.7GB is affecting performance or I will lose interest in this thread quickly.

I am glad you posted those graphs as it clears one question up - 4gb is being accessed and used.

I think in use the 3.5gb and 0.5gb chunks of memory work just as fast as each other but there could be a problem with very large chunks of data that could be very slow going into the 0.5gb part of the memory.

More testing please.:)

yeh its going to go around in circles
its pretty hard to prove
but having a open mind to it helps!

you are assuming the performance problems would show up immediately in that 2min test, my guess is it wouldnt

but i did explain why before so ><

Have you ever run out of VRAM?

The funny part about it is thinking logically if I needed a card tomorrow based on what I have read in this thread I would have no problem grabbing the GTX 970 without a second thought.

If anyone does not believe me, remember I have a couple of GTX 960s coming tomorrow.:)

Same here Kaap. I would have no issues at all buying a 970. Seems something out of nothing and nobody has posted anything up to the contrary.

I would put me off if i was looking to get a couple of cards to try DSR for 4k. I would deffo hold back on the trigger until i got some good proof and test done to prove otherwise not saying or supporting the case for, just saying if it was me i would be slightly put off yes.

I still think this has been well blown out of proportion and is no where near as bad as it sounds.
