A Week With NVIDIA's G-SYNC Monitor

Very hard to tell from a video.

I can't say that I have noticed much stuttering or tearing, certainly nothing like what is shown in that video.

anandtech has posted a video to showcase the differences:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vAzRHVXaaV0

i can't say ive experienced the stuttering shown here with v-sync on, not sure if this is because i use triple buffering (forced with dx3doverride)?

Watched that and too me it looks jerky and slow on all three, even the G-Sync one.

I am not buying it, spend the £150 you save by buying a regular monitor on a faster GPU, you'll get more benefits.

I need to see this in person on a decent machine, I am talking a PC with like 2x GTX 780 or 2x R290 Pro.

Well it definitely looks smoother then the other 2 in that video. Its a hell of a lot smoother then the mess of tearing and jerkiness that is 60hz with vsync off. You can still see a little bit of stuttering with vsync on which isn't there on the gsync monitor at all. Overall, the difference between vsync on and gsync looks pretty minor but if you factor in input lag then it could be a much better solution over all.

Now we need to see comparisons at 120hz or 144hz.

My point is though, the systems I game on are smoother than the G-Sync one in that video.

My system spec - HD 7990 either attached to a 30" DELL or a 27" 144Hz 1ms iiyama and it is far smoother than the G-Sync in that video.

You are never going to get a perspective of how smooth it is by watching a youtube video. It needs to be seen from a couple of feet away and in proper gaming environments.

That's the problem though, almost everyone isn't going to be able to see it first hand without taking a hit when DSR'ing. All they are going to have are people's opinions. It certainly appears to be a tech you need to see in the flesh or use, because from those videos I wouldn't want to pay the premium and be locked down vastly by my monitor choice.

My red corner rig is coming on-line tonight/tomorrow, so will then have both green & red to use, but right now I am more interested in Mantle than G-Sync.

Yeah for sure the higher refresh monitors will be much smoother then 60hz even if it does have gsync enabled. I'm just saying there is a visible improvement in that video and if there is also a visible improvement at 120/144hz then I'd still be interested.

The thing is, when you are sitting a bit closer to your monitor with nothing to compare it too I think that you just don't notice tearing and jerking as much, especially with bigger screens. Add the fact that we've been gaming with tearing and jerkiness for pretty much our entire gaming lives then it might be the case that we are all so used to it we just don't notice it any more.

I've got a feeling its going to be one of them things that once you've used it and then gone back to a monitor that doesn't have it, you'll really notice the difference. A lot of people said that 120hz was a gimmick and only needed if you wanted 3D when that first came out. Ignorance is bliss as they say ;)

Fair points but I am sure the people who do buy will give feedback from it and give all the pluses and minuses :)

Mantle is being bigged up by Gibbo, so I expect great things when it finally reaches us :)

you can't get a comparison by looking at a real monitor compared with a video of gsync... in the context of the video, of the screens shown, the gsync one is visibly smoother

the camera that takes the video is going to have it's own syncing issues, so a video will always ad some jerkiness over and above what the screens are showing - in the video they have a non-gsync 144hz screen, and by comparison the gsync one is smoother

you need to compare gsync with non either all in video or all in real life, you can't do half and half and get a fair comparison

For all the guys at the conference to claim this as a "Game changer", I am quite surprised at the negativity of this. Sure for monetary increases, the likes of Asus/BenQ will be cashing in (well said earlier Bru) but this surely has to be given a chance before being written off?

It am quite surprised at Gibbo being so negative, when it will be profit for any that are sold in truth.

Carmack et al were promised something in return for kind words, quid pro quo. ;)

They went a bit overboard though and showed their hand.

Maybe but like anything, I would like to see it first hand before writing it off. That youtube vid clearly makes it look good although, if my games ran like either of the other 2, I wouldn't be happy at all. They look seriously poor on that vid and stuttering is terrible.

Not negative, I am just not so sold on it yet. Let me see one, I might change my mind. ;)

Just to me its not making much sense and seems over-priced. If the BenQ models are fairly priced and the G-Sync is beneficial then they will be great, it is just a shame BenQ models won't show for about another two months or so.

I am surprised you don't have one? Seen a few e-tailers and Reviewers have theirs?
