A8R32-MVP what is it

Hi raja

Just general impressions on the forums really regarding compatability with certain games (not specific to this motherboard) here and over at rage3d.

I didnt want to fork out for the mastercard if it really wasnt worth it at this time.

Otherwise im happy to go for it now.

I'm running crossfire (system in sig and running on WinXP 32 bit, non-RAID), with no problems on most games. Games I've tested are HL2, WH40K Dawn of War/Winter Assault, Fear, Sims2, X3: Reunion. Had a problem running Nexus Jupiter Incident but haven't really tried to get to the bottom of it yet. All is looking good, games wise at least.

Still have a major problem with no output to the screen after the machine has been powered off over night. The new 311 bios didn't fix it :( and the only way I can get round this is by hitting F8 for windows boot options and enabling VGA mode (I do have output up to the point of the 'windows loading' screen), then resizing the desktop once windows has loaded.

I'm pretty sure this is a hardware problem and not windows software as I have done 2 complete installs and both exhibit the same problem. I've now ditched the Wireless LAN card in case that was making any problems (it hasn't made a difference) and will try moving the X-Fi card to the now free pci slot which the wireless was in to see if that helps.

Apart from that everything is great. Running HL2 and Fear at 1600x1200 with all eye candy smooth as butter :)

NB: Does anyone have 'plug and play OS' turned ON in the bios? Mine is off by default and I'm wondering whether turning it on may help my problem.

HI,

has anyone tried the new battlefield 2 patch yet version 1.21? I am having problems with it. I used it this morning fine even played for a while, but when I try to play it this afternoon I find my mouse freezes when I get to the select spawnpoint screen. I have reset to all defaults in bios, re flashed bios, re-installed the game. The only thing common was that both times I have used the patch, so now I' gonna try a fresh install without the patch..............

No ,

Its just in the manual (page 2-16 :D )

One is PCI Express Lan

The other is PCI Lan

I would presume that the PCI Express is better which is what i think im plugged into

Whether you use the PCI or PCIE LAN wont make much difference during normal everyday use, unless you are moving very large files around. Then you're likely to see a speed increase when using the PCIE one, other network hardware permitting. Don't ask me why. Just something I read when I was researching the board ;)

Cheers for the replies,

I leave Plug an Play O/S to off (default)

Will test the new patch later for you raja,

Goto go shoppin with the misses :( :D

Hi Andy,

hope you had a nice trip, good news is that the locking up in games seems to have been solved.

Overclocking is still a little finnicky, but you can get around the issues.
So all in all, you could say there is success.

I think there are always gonna be issues (as with all motherboards these days), and the real major ones are gone (for me anyway).

Regards
Raja

cheers for that , glad its looking better , would you wait and try one of the other boards that are due out or are you happy enough with that one
cheers Andy

Hi, well my issue repeats itself everytime now that I switch on, so I for one do not consider issues as fixed at all. The problem is I'm not sure who to blame and how to fix it as it would seem to be the bios still, however, some might argue it's the drives. Well as they have worked with all of my motherboards I've had I'd go towards the bios or the ULi being at fault. I'm still runing at stock settins so an overclock isn't at fault. It just seem that whenever there's a problem with booting the PC, the board then fails to detect the HD's, detects the DVD ok though.

Hi Andy

just look what you started with your before launch m/b :D

I would say along with Raja and Coolasmoo plus others that you could buy this m/b now and be happy but flash to the 311 on asus ftp site plus others

Chris I would say its the HD why not replace one with a WD , because it detects the DVD ok all would seem to be OK , have you an old ide drive you could pop on to the IDE channel just to test

It may be a small incompatiblity thing maybe with the HDD spin up time being to long and the drive not fully ready when the bios looks for them

from your post Raja am i reading it right this patch has caused you to have to reflash the bios , now that is very worrying.

BTW we discussed the mem skew with mine for bank 1 being 720ps today its reset to 450ps, looks like its a dynamic thing.

I notice that Asus have not posted the bios on thier web site but its on thier ftp site , if i were a gambling person i would bet they do not post it but post a reworked one later, which is a bit poor because most of the M/B owners would just look at the Asus web site

are you running in raid?

if so the board the diverts into only checking the ide connections, not the sata ones, they are self configured and work fine even though they are not shown in bios. The board will only show my drives in bios when raid is switched off, and you use pata.

Hi,

no I was just concerned that bios had caused the patch to stop working, I like you noticed that the skew had auto set to 450, I thought this was the cause. So I reflashed just to ceck what the original skew was. It starts at 750 and 600 I think. I have now disabled auto and used this setting manually so that the board cannot auto change.

BF2 works fine.

Thanks
Raja

Just want to check something out ,

Which port at the back are you plugged into for the NIC,
Im into the 2nd one nearest the power supply which i think is the one to use.

Marvell Yukon 88E8053 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller

Am in the upper on - the PCie one...

Raja - am just installing BF2 as we speak - will patch and get back to you...

Ok Raja

we are slowly learning how this board ticks , i will leave my skew set to auto just to see what it does ( as a control against your fixed settings )

Blinder^
I must be the only one using the pci one then , to be honest I just bunged it in the first one i saw , did not even think about it being the pci one, let me d/l at 1.23mbs with < 1% cpu useage

Why do i post that i did not think ASUS would post the 311 bios on the web site

They have put it up now

here is the description
"A8R32-MVP Deluxe BIOS Version 0311
Added "P2P write between Gfx ports" in BIOS setup menu.
Fix FRAPS testing program might report incorrect framerate.
Fix PCI-E is always fixed at 100Mhz.
"

so it looks like nothing was wrong realy :D
