A8R32-MVP what is it

Hi,

I take it we're talking about the firm called S, Hmm, I did put a note stating that the problem was with the ram I'm using, but considering what you've told me, they might not take that into account......

If they offer me credit I'm unsure of what I want, either 2 more hard drives, for a 4 disk raid 0 setup, or a gaming mouse and something else to make up the value.

Anyway back on topic, I have managed the same overclock with a lower voltage on this board than the last.

I reckon a 300htt @ 1T is possible, but it's for the advanced only, as it would involve the hard voltage mod to make the cpu voltage just a little more stable. Asus boards always seem to have a voltage that fluctuates slightly, it's not massive but it takes the slightest edge off their ultimate clockability. This is not a moan from me however, Asus don't really aim their boards for the really hardcore overclockers, they are aimed at mid to high market at people who overclock sensibly. I'm quite happy with this board now, and at the moment there seems to be nothing that can touch it for ati cards.....

Somewhat disturbing though is that I almost miss the satisfaction of hunting down the fix with the other guys here.............

Hi,

Just something I read last night concerning an DFI board, a guy fried 3 of his cpus on a motherboard made by this company.

He removed the battery for the cmos, and somehow it screwed up the voltage control in the bios for the cpu core. I think a lot of people use this method at times, but the moral of this is to avoid doing it unless you are sure it won't cause problems. Although it does not really apply here, it's always better to be safe and avoid using this method on new motherboards. He lost 2 fx57's and an amd 4800, as he was convinced the problem was something else.

yes know what you we have lost the sense of the hunt for our goal now we have found it you feel deflated.

Glad the new board is ok

got to water cool this one due to the desk ( the case is sucking in the hot exhaust air ) 95 deg C gfx and 50 Deg C cpu with a mb temp at 45

I wonder what bios Duke is refering to ?

Driverheaven did mention another bios, in that initial thread they posted up on the problems with the board.

Aparantly the one we are using now is just a quick fix, so to speak

If that's the case things should get even better (in theory),

Gary Key @ Anandtech has been in contact with me again, I'll let you know of developments as things become more clear, still impressed with their support even though this is not really a priority for them.

WARNING: NOOB QUESTION INCOMING

I just bought this mobo and an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800+, I'm gonna put Mushkin 2GB DDR XP4000 Extreme Performance Dual Channel Kit (2x1GB) in it tomorrow when it arrives - at the moment it's just got some crucial 3200 ddr in it.

Anyway, I'm a complete nub - what the hell should the settings be in the bios ?(currently everything's set on AUTO ;))

Just for default speeds - is auto OK? I don't even know what it's meant to be running at but the bios said 2GHz...

Any advice would be muchly appreciated

My PC probe II works fine mobo at 30C CPU at 38C.

I downloaded the one from Asus's website for this mobo. A8R32-MVP
Thanks. Can anyone tell me where the temperature sensor is on this board? It kinda bothers me to see the my temperature reading so high (higher than the CPU on idle). My CPU (Opteron 165) idle at 34-36 and increases to 43 after several hours of dual priming. The motherboard on the other hand stays around 42-43 all the time.

Well Jono.

Most good quality memory will already have the optimal timings programed into the chip. Others have relaxed timings that can go tighter

My Corsair 3500LL Pro runs at default speed of:

CAS# Latency 2.0 clocks
RAS# to CAS# 3 clocks
RAS# Precharge 2 clocks
Cycle Time (TRAS) 6 clocks
Bank Cycle Time (TRC) 11 clocks
DRAM Idle Timer 16 clocks
Command Rate 1T

so setting auto if not overclocking is fine.

The timings may need to be relaxed if overclocking the HTT, this is when you need to go in manually

Hi, yes raja, you are correct, if you didn't have the motherboard long then push them for a refund, worked for me. According to their test they found nothing wrong with the board, but then if they just threw in a IDE HD and some cheap ram that's what I would expect.....

Hi Jono
I've got the same Mushkin kit in mine and I use the motherboard default settings as I don't know what I'm doing when it comes to overclocking memory yet. Going to learn though which is why i chose this memory :)

Anyway with everything set to auto on the motherboard, Everest reports it as PC3200 (200MHz) with memory timings of 3.0-3-2-8 (CL-RCD-RP-RAS),voltage SSTL 2.5, refresh rate: reduced (7.8 us). I have no idea whether it's at 1T or 2T command rate though and no idea how to find out short of going into the bios and turning off auto, then it shows.

Could someone tell me, if you turn off auto, are the settings it then shows the same settings it was using when on auto or are they different?

Morning all, well my morning got off to a good start!!! Motherboard arrived just after 8:30, rev 103g, bios v 0201, not going to flash to 0311 yet. Installed the motherboard ok, had a minor panic when I thought I'd sent the case connectors back to 'S' in mistake, but no, put them in a safe place, jeez that would have cost me a new case if I had...

PC booted up first time, HD drives and the Corsairs were all correctly detected, I didn't perform a fresh install of XP, couldn't see the point really but I might go for my X64 again sometime in the future...

Well so far so good, fingers still crossed though, will test it with my games now and I'll report back. thanks all....

Well that was short lived dammit, bluescreened in both HF2 and TOCA, now, once again, it will not boot with the Corairs in place. So guys, I'm no better off, any suggestions about what I should do next, two replacement memory modules I think but which?

EDIT: HF2 plays ok with my cheapie Kingstons but only after I had to update the bios as I was getting really bad stuttering....

remove all display drivers, flash to 311, reboot without any overclocks, then load xp and reinstall all drivers, reboot, and try games again.

unless you have already flashed to 311, otherwise it seems it does not like your memory.

raja, I can't boot with the corairs it won't post, fans will turn HD's will click but no bleep. Your suggestions, though welcomed, aren't able to help me...

Google for A64 Tweaker, it is a fantastic little program and will allow you to tweak or show current memory configuration in Windows.

It will also show you if you are running 1T or 2T

Actually im glad i mentioned a64 Tweaker, because if you look below, the bios has Auto'd to 2T

Im going to manually change it and see what it reports

Look in the box that says 2T timing, this should show disable (i think)
