Abramovich & Chelsea + a bit of Everton

This does seem quite harsh when you consider what the Saudi's are doing in Yemen (and how horrible they are in general), yet they get a completely free pass from everyone.

It's not the fault of the Chelsea fans that Abramovich is their owner, a football club is an institution as much as it is a business. I think some kind of balance is needed.

I agree but maybe from another angle. The Saudi owned clubs will eventually have their reckoning as well. It's down to the fans when they welcome this money with open arms.

But then look at those scenes of the Newcastle fans when the Saudi's bought the club. Fair enough they got rid of Mike Ashley, but come on... totally ignorant and sick considering.

Id have more sympathy but they kinda ruined it last week when they chanted for Abramovich.

Agree about the owners of the other clubs though, its a disgrace to be honest.

His pre-emptive moves to scurry away to try and avoid this is good enough for anyone other than hardened Chelski converts. It's tainted, not even in a distant way. It's the end of the Russian era for Chelsea, now how do we want to do it? Rip off the plaster or drag this out for ages? I don't want to see Chelsea disappear as a club, but I also don't want a club, bankrolled by a oligarch close to a state waging war in Europe, playing in the English league while hospitals are being bombed.

Their sponsors agree. I wonder if the players sponsors will also have a say?

Also, Blair doesn't bankroll a football team and I also feel none of his mates would be allowed to operate a football club in Iraq...

Chelsea will be an example of this country rejecting anything related to Russia and Putin. There's nothing stopping this sentiment. It's war talk.

Yes fair enough I get all that but he isn't publicly backing the war or have any influence in it happening or not. I get he made all his money and power from backhanders and bribes but so what. Defense contracts in this country happened in the same way. I wonder when Chelsea is sold eventually how many backhanders and donations will be made to get that club into the right hands. He's not been convicted of anything, I'd be happy if all clubs where owned by the fans but this to me and the reasoning is shady as **** and I'm not a Chelsea fan.

Why RIP Chelsea? The government simply seize the asset, sell it to the best bidder and the club continues on but 1 corrupt Russian oligarch is a bit poorer. Shame.

If you take the coin with no moral hazard you might get burned shame never mind.

Same goes for the Arab owners etc. Money isn't everything but some clubs and supporters think it is.

Isn't that technically the same as going bust and should involve a points deduction at least.

Not really, as long as they pay their debts and it's done quickly so the lack of income from ticket sales etc doesnt threaten that then there's no reason Chelsea should suffer.

I'm no fan of Chelsea, and they have to concede they owe their success to corrupt money, but the club shouldn't be punished. Abramovich should, hence seize it quickly and sell it, use the proceeds to pay for old people to heat their houses.

The asset is frozen. It can’t be sold.

edit…apparently it can be sold providing he doesn’t benefit. Seems unlikely he’d agree to that despite what’s been said about giving the money to war victims wtc

I'm just saying what I would like to happen. Let's face it, they made up the rules to get rich, let's make up the rules to take it away.

Roman seemed to be pretty fond of the club so if it means the club can move forward I think he would walk away with nothing. 3 Billion to him is like 100 quid for the average Joe.

The sad part of this story is the way successive governments have turned a blind eye, ie. condoned dirty money flushing through the City.

Half the stuff in your house comes from a country with terrible human rights record. You don't care. Everyone of us here funds these awful countries. Food, fuel, electronics or whatever else. In one aspect trump was right on Nato, why should he care when the Germans and others where fueling (no pun intended) the Russians. It's damn hypocritical to suddenly take the high ground on this one after 15 odd years mere months after allowing the Newcastle purchase. But we probably have a load of arms we want to sell to the Saudi's.

It's a 3rd of his worth! But he will make it all back I'm sure once this is all over and Germany starts buying fuel and getting their car parts made there again.

It will be interesting to see how cheap the club gets sold. I think someone is going to get a bargain. Highest bid Mr Johnson £12.

Yeah I can't see him selling it for zero profit. Which could potentially bankrupt the club. So it'll really come down to whether he was a real Chelsea fan, or it was all about the money/business.

Silence speaks volumes unfortunately.

Yeah but if you were a high profile Russian would you speak out against Putin? I guess that's why we are doing things like this, because we won't actually do anything about Russia even if they bomb every Hospital and School in the Ukraine. We will stand and clap speeches and change Facebook profile pictures stating we stand with Ukraine while stripping some assets to help pay for furlough.

What's it got to do with him now? None of the money will go to him will it? He won't have any say.

"But the BBC understands the government would consider allowing Mr Abramovich to apply for a special licence to sell the club, providing he can prove he would not benefit from the sale."

So the sale will happen for nothing for him anyway?
