Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2012, Yas Marina - Race 18/20

The race was alright today, was happy to see Kimi get a win, but was not so good the way it happened. Hamilton has made the right choice to try and get into a team that can get their cars the full race distance...

Mercedes, full race distance? You kiddin?

Well, people wanted to see Vettel come from the back of the grid and come through the field. He did that today.

And still some people complain. Some people will never be convinced.

Kimi drove great today, as did Hamilton, as did Vettel, as did Alonso.

I'm not sure who should get the driver of the day. I think it has to go to all 4 of the above drivers.

McLaren have got to be worried about next season. They are losing a top line driver (in the same class as Vettel/Alonso) and are getting a junior driver as his replacement. Button, at present does not possess the weaponry to trouble Vettel, Hamilton or Alonso, in equal/similar machinery.

For the first time in many years, they are now going to start next year without a top line driver. They must now focus on producing the fastest car on the grid, to give their drivers a chance of win.

I think next year's title race will be a straight fight between Alonso and Vettel.

Anyway gents, we have 2 races to go. Vettel has the best car. He is leading the title race. He is favourite. BUT Alonso's class-leading skills should make the last 2 races exciting.

Jenson Button summed it up perfectly after the race:

"Without those two safety cars Seb wouldn't have been up there at the front"

Ergo, you can see why some people still aren't convinced. Whichever way you try to look at Vettel's race today, he lucked in big time.

I even said on this forum that Vettel's middle name must be lucky...

About a minute later Brundle said on Sky, "Vettel's middle name must be lucky"

:D

So there's more than just Jenson thinking it ;)

edit - Lewis also said the same thing after the race. "He must be the luckiest guy in Formula 1"

Convinced then? Should we be?

What I will say about Vettel is he was hungry, and he had the desire to get on the podium at least, you could see that. I admire him for that, but then that's a standard prerequisite of a driver with the best car on the grid, even if he does start from last. He does make things happen for himself, and it's true to some extent that one makes their own luck. He did however have a mighty big slice of the stuff fall onto his lap today.

I swear you are just trying to get a reaction, it wasn't a drive from the back to the front. It was a drive seriously aided by two safety cars in a seriously fast car when the fastest car had dropped out and his team mate imploded.

Where do you think he would have finished without them?

In a way the grid position was not of his doing so you can't begrudge him Schumacher levels of fortune, but to suggest his 3rd was due to mega pace and driving back to front is stretching it a tad for me.

Mclaren surely have to be asking themselves if they can buy Hamilton out of his Merc contract ;) because they are looking at a world of pain next year unless they build a car 0.5+ on the ferrari or red bull.

Jenson Button summed it up perfectly after the race:

.

Neither would he.

Literally just got back from the circuit. Was a good race to watch, and certainly good from where we were sat as we could see pretty much every major incident; the major crash, Hamilton failing, spin out, Vettel overtaking Button at the end, the other collision...

Was my first time watching it live and I think I certainly picked a good one.

Also, if i was Mclaren i would be worried about Perez's recent performances. He has been showing his immaturity and inexperience a lot. Kobayishi is now only 8 points behind him.

As people have said, without Lewis, they are going to need a seriously fast car next year to stay at the top.

You got lucky ;)

just watched the hightlights as i missed the race

What national Anthem was played for lotus? They didnt show it on the highlights, i guess it was the Malaysia national anthem?

What you don't want to do is watch half the race in London, then drive back assuming your F1 HD series link is still active only to find it isn't...

So now I've watched it all.. still awesome. Lewis denied another victory by bad luck, while Vettel is like a luck machine. Still you've got to be there to take advantage of these situations and they played it out perfectly. Good drives from the top 4 I think. Favourite bits were definitely Kimi on the radio though. They must love calling him up in the race. :p

Oh and good to see the DRS working at a stereotypically boring track.

well its not really a Lotus is it?

Whats that got to do with anything ?

When the teams register with the FIA they have to declare a "home" country, if they win that is the national anthem that gets played. Teams usually declare where they are based as their home country, Lotus are based here.
The exception to the "normal" behaviour is Red Bull who, whilst being based in Milton Keynes are registered as Austrian.

OK.

I will give you this. Vettel is generally a lucky driver, however, in any sport (in fact as somebody pointed out earlier in this thread, in regular life), to succeed, you need luck on your side.

Vettel perhaps, brings luck with him.

He drove well today (luck or no luck), coming from 22nd (after the 1st SC period). He cruised up to the back of Webber before the 2nd SC, after taking a pitstop (Webber had not pitted at this stage). When Alonso achieves this feat, everybody laudes Alonso...yet when Vettel does the same, people look for reasons to berate Vettel.

Even on the BBC F1 forum, the commentary team were lauding Vettel's efforts.
