Acer XB270HU - Worlds First IPS, 1440p, 144hz, Gsync

1) Great review. So glad to read that this monitor is living up to the hype, despite the scepticism of various people (myself included)

2) Despite reading about monitors online nearly every day, I somehow missed the apparent fact that TFTCentral and Overclockers UK are...the...same....company? Same management? Badass is Simon Baker? How the heck do you all know this? I can't see it spelled out anywhere

3) Given that the Swift also had a glowing review, I certainly hope this Acer won't be plagued by the same QA issues and luck-of-the-draw odds on getting a good one without issues

4) Now that 144Hz AHVA has been proven viable for gaming, let's have some similar monitors that support blur reduction for AMD users, and (when the time comes) FreeSync.

glad you liked the review. No, TFTCentral and OcUK aren't linked at all. It's just that i'm Simon, and a long term member of OcUK so i continue to post here and provide monitor advice when i can. other members know that or put two and two together based on some of my input here that's all :) TFTcentral have an affiliate relationship with several UK retailers including OcUK but thats the extent of it. no other link between the two os us other than a friendly support for one another i guess :)

Question though - what's the chances of a 144hz VA rather than ips type gsync panel with a high contrast ratio and deep blacks coming out? Something like the latest samsung 34 inch curved superwide, but 144hz and gsync? Will VA introduce issues like input lag etc, more than ips?

It's still up in the air what kind of panel will be used in the forthcoming (Q2 2015 at earliest) Acer XR341CK curved 34" gaming monitor. could be TN Film, VA or IPS, just don't know yet. Samsung and AUO are still heavily investing in VA panels so it's certainly possible if they can get response times down low enough. Sharp did it with the MVA panel they produced for the Eizo FG2421 and we've all seen what AUO managed to do with the AHVA(IPS) panel in the XB270HU here as well. so at some point i wouldn't be surprised if we saw more high refresh rate VA panels from someone. when, is another question!

Hi,

Im thinking of getting this monitor not just for gaming but office work also.

Does this offer the Blue Light reduction that most newer monitors are also starting to introduce?

Great review , im kinda in "shutupandtakemymoney.gif" mode but is this going to be a OCUK exclusive? the screen is not even listed anywhere else atm.

That and I hope the date holds and OCUK get a large number units. Ofc the price is high but compared to the swift I don't think the premium is that much

Mikoyan, I asked Badass the question above and unfortunately this model does not have the blue light reduction. Hopefully the upcoming Acer 34" 144 Hz Curved display will have it.

Thanks for the clarification. Sounds like I should have sent my (paltry) donation to you instead of TFTCentral... :)

Does Gsync fix a lot of issues with stutters from games like Borderlands 2 and other games where if i play them on my 120hz at 60fps they seem to be fine but if i play them at 120fps they seem to stutter sometimes doing things. It almost feels like a lot of games at 120fps dont work properly.

chances are your graphics card is struggling to maintain the costant 120fps frame rate which isn't surprising, so thats exactly what G-sync is designed to address :) even more of a challenge on higher res screens like this, which is why G-sync is so valuable

Is it wrong to admit I've just blew my beans over this review lol do ocuk take kidneys as a deposit for this monitor?

imagine what it's like having one in front of you ;) i wonder how much i could get for this is i auctioned it off?! although suspect Acer might not be too pleased if they didn't get it back from me! haha

No, i get over 120 all the time. Im locking it to 120.
Its an issue with framerate syncing in some games or something, happens on my friends rig too and on my second rig,.

Yeah probably down to frame rate and refresh rate mismatch. Are you using vsync?

No vsync doesnt fix it, i'll try and do a video on it at some point, i've just noticed if i lock some games at 60 its fine and the texture streaming works fine but as soon as you start gaming at 120fps it has issues.

Try it, go on borderlands 2 and look closely running around, turn around quick soemitmes it'll stutter real quick, space marine does it, f3ar does it, dishonoured does it, not every game does but a lot do. Granted most dont notice it.

Just wondering cause i do wanna pick up a gsync and this looks nice.

For me i have not tested but i think it will be massive, I notice anything that goes below my refresh rate, if i dip to 119 at 120hz i notice because of the out of sync. If g-sync puts an end to that then i too will cream myself when i get one.

Because i live in the past now just to get 120.00. Heck i have a 4300 core and cache 4770k, 16GB 2400 10-12-12-25 1T ram, And a 980 that boosts at 1550 and i still have trouble keeping 120.00 in GTA IV. That game was made in 2008 and only now in early 2015 am i playing it. Then again i am playing it with 4K DSR which would be 4x the res and fps the game was probably intended. Also not having fps sync shuts me out of RTS games which always dip to 30fps (hello totalwar) i will not be able to play anything past Napoleon until GSYNC. But i think its worth waiting as up until now the only way i get by is with frame limiter to 120. With G-Sync i can also ditch another bit of cpu cycle hogging software! Welcome to the future :D

I am going to read the review later on, But can i ask can i have ALL the features in one go in one input? Can i have G-Sync AND ULMB @ 144hz? Please be both i have the Eizo Foris VA and i do not want to give up ULMB but need G-Sync :(

No deal then not worth the money the Eizo Foris is a damm good deal for £299 compared to the price of this. I think i can achieve the exact same with 120.00 and an fps clamp like Afterburner. And my blacks will always trump the IPS and so will the Gloss. The only thing i will gain here is reduced input lag but i am not sure if i will achieve the exact same mouse feeling as turning off vsync. I believe G-sync still has input lag and input lag never stopped me from being great at L4D.

I guess it will be the Ultrawide version then i will trade ULMB for 144hz G-Sync Ultrawide and by the time it comes i will have played through all my old titles with no 21:9 support. I knew something about this would be wrong. WTH is the point of advertising ULMB and Gsync and 144hz? IPS has horrible blur you only notice it once you move to something with ULMB

:(
