ADSL Max Question?

for a start if thats your isp control panel on their website they'll probably be slow to update information on there, best to check the router, and see the sync'd rate then do a adsl test to see the datarate.

Well i was upto 3.5mbps when i got in from work at half 5 now back down to 0.8. Its becoming very annoying!

Im sync at this though

Connection Speed:

• Incoming: 8128 kbps

• Outgoing: 448 kbps

+44

Erm, this doesn't look good does it?

I've been downloading at 600KB/s recently though, why is my max stable speed only 2Mbps? I sync at 8Mbps!

AFAIK it means that if your sync rate drops below that it will be considered a fault by BT.

Well I've just hit 3Mbp/s (~340KB/s). My max stable rate is 4500kbps  - pretty good for a line of 53dB Attn!!! Currently sync'ed at 5865kbps. Man, I'm so glad I got this Belkin 7633 router - my Netgear DG834G was extremely flakey on this long line. Still, it's 8:45am so it's pretty early days - let's see how it goes at peak time!

Well I was upgraded this morning..

according to my router im connected at 8128Kb/448Kb but my download speeds are exactly the same at the moment :(

will have to see what happens after a few days i guess...

Hey guys,

With my contract nearly over with Pipex (At last...) I've been starting to think about MAX again

I've been on the Netgear forums recently looking for a problem I've been having with one of their switches and I've noticed some threads regarding problems with MAX and the trusty old DG834G - the router which I happen to own

Is there any truth is this? I'm sure I've seen users in these forums using said router with MAX with nothing to report?

Help!

SW.

I have a V2 DG834G that has performed flawlessly with Max, has never sync'd below 8128 from day 1.

What sort of problems were they reporting?

A lot of the issues people have are down to Max, not to their routers.

It was reporting line stats very incorrectly - things like negative SNR values, iirc.

I saw this thread http://forum1.netgear.com/support/viewtopic.php?t=27673 - though there are others, all similar.

But on reflection you probably right - its problems with MAX and not the router they're having? I think I was just panicking

Out of interest though, what firmware are you using? I'm on the latest official release, but I still have an SNR that loves to wander... 12-25dB in a day! Lower in the day, higher at night?

This could cause a few problems with MAX couldn't it?

For a forum that's supposed to specialise in networking/adsl and the like, there's a hell of a lot of misinformation in there. 'Turn your modem off so it can download the new 8mb config file when it turns on'. And the other guy who reckons that my changing his MTU it miraculously jumped from 2Mb to 8Mb. Have these guys not heard of the BRAS profile limits?

A lot of worrying stuff in that forum, mostly the lack of knowledge :)

I'm using V3.01.25 at the moment.

The upstream att is misreported at 50% of the correct value in the web interface but aside form that I've not seen any major issues that would affect Max performance.

Your wandering SNR is a concern though.

It is more common to see the margin falling in the evening due to many issues like street lighting and interference from various radio frequency sources and it is true that those who have a large variation between night and day are seeing more disconnects.

My SNR would wander by 14dB without fail all day long. For a few minutes after turning on it would be at the highest, then off it went going down by 14DB for a few hours before recovering about 7dB later. Also, sometimes it remains connected but just will not work (i.e. Internet stops working) unitl a reboot.

The problem with a large variation over time is that Max will set a target of about 6dB and will increase sync rate till it hits 8128 or the 6dB target.

If it gets down to 6dB during the day but then drops lower at night the disconnects start happening and the Max hardware at BTs end of things doesn't seem to be all that good at figuring out that it needs to reduce the sync rate rather than continuing to try reconnect all the time.

I'm really loving max

This has been going on everynight since I got Max ,1 week after it was activated. Had 3 BT engineer visits, new run of cable from entry point, new NTE5, an RF3 and filtered faceplate, but still it drops.

2mbit was rock solid.

im with f2s and my router says: DownStream Connection Speed 5952 kbps
UpStream Connection Speed 448 kbps is this good what does it mean??

Exactly what it says?

Downstream speed: 5952kbps
Upstream speed: 448kbps

How else can you put it? 5952kbps is high enough for the 5Mbps BRAS profile (after deducting overheads).
