Afghanistan - 20 years on

I think you are being a bit of a drama queen , I am using adblock it is not that hard to read......

Turn off adblock and take a look at the site.

I've happily navigated the net daily for what...23 years and not felt the need for an ablocker. That link made me want to sort my **** out and get one installed :D

The abuse thrown at MOD officials and FCO staff etc. The other charity/NGO staff outraged that they couldn't get people processed because of these clowns taking up everyone's time. It's all been reported in the likes of the Guardian, BBC etc.

Yeah, it does seem to have been a bit of a faff for them and diverted attention/time/resources away from dealing with others. I mean they've known for a few days now that they're not going to be able to evacuate everyone who is entitled to a visa/evacuation and they're going to be leaving people behind.

Staff at some animal sanctuary + some animals probably weren't otherwise as much of a priority (or under as much threat from reprisals from the Taliban) as say interpreters and their families waiting outside the airport. To then divert civil servants to dealing with sorting out getting animal rescue staff through the mass of people already waiting and getting their special flight cleared etc.. seems a bit off.

Why would anyone choose to live there is beyond me. Unless you have deep emotions about that way of life, but otherwise the quality of living in a western world (if you're British) is much better.
Its not about that.. some will stay in the hope that they can help. Afghanistan was a dangerous place before this Kabal clown fiesta, especially in the rural areas where the taliban have been for months, so to some there is very little difference to staying.

I think the best thing to come out of all of this was the film Team America World Police. It was downhill after that.

Let's all agree that despite what politicians say they don't actually know what they're doing and move on. Now, how do I get some local pot holes filled in?

I think it confirms that you can't really get rid of a tyrant without risking there being worse replacements and I can easily believe that if we'd gotten rid of the Taliban (somehow) then ISIS would have merely moved into the power vacuum.

If the Taliban are even remotely self-aware they'll exploit this.

Yep, a never ending civil war fraught with suicide bombings and attacks on civilians by all sides. What a wonderful outlook for Afghanistan.

Well they wont get rid of ISIS them by asking them nicely to go away, they need to be destroyed.

Do the Taliban do suicide bombings on civilians ? i didnt know that

Looking more and more silly to abandon that airport, it was where they were launching the airstrikes from which was keeping the Taliban in check and it would have been a much better evacuation point in terms of defending it.

Agreed, the point will be made by many however, that closing Bagram was part of Trumps "can't be broken" deal, which was then "broken" by Biden when he extended the leaving date to the 11th Sept from the original date. You also get into the stickier prospect of the Taliban potentially attacking the airport (I don't think they would have) and then getting people from Kabul to Bagram as the 20km distance makes it far easier for the Taliban to block access. So whilst I agree, there's no "perfect answer" to whether the base should have been closed or not, just "which of these bad answer do you want to pick" unfortunately.

Ideally the ANA would have held up (or even beat) the Taliban long after the evacuation was over but thats 20/20 hindsight again.

Could you imagine being an ANA soldier with that sort of plan though?

"Hey guys, most of the country has fallen but now we need you to risk your life so a bunch of Western nationals, diplomats, some well-connected Afghans, some animal charity workers and some dogs/cats can all safely escape. A bunch of you will die/get wounded but it's for the good of these other people, oh and when the Taliban do inevitably capture Kabul in 2-3 months anyway they'll still want to hunt you down and kill you."
