Afghanistan - 20 years on

Interesting to read what the projections are in the near future about this on the world stage:

China likely to be one of the few countries to recognise a Taliban government in kabul and look to benefit from engaging with them/deflect any exports of terrorism/hostilities to within their own borders.

Disastrous outcome for India, now that extreme factions in Pakistan will be bolstered.

Iran will look to support Shia elements even more within Afghanistan.

The 'stans to the North will of course be impacted.

454 deaths during Op Herrick, for nothing but an even worse situation than we had before. The middle east is pure *****.

I didn't post that:confused::eek:
Yeah I just realised that. :p I've edited it, no idea why it quoted you.

Yeah it won't be the Taliban that are a problem there - it is that they give AQ, etc. a safe haven who will.
Indeed. It seems the Taliban will rule the country how they want, everyone will accept it, and there will be peace. The Taliban and ISIS are enemies, as long as they keep those elements out.

It's a pickle, my personal point of view though is that the human rights abuses simply cannot be ignored. But who says we're the world police?

It was all so much easier in the post cold-war era to be the world's policeman; the Russian's were in Chaos and the Chinese were no threat.
Now the Russians are back; albeit I don't seem them as a direct threat; more likely to be proxy fights like in the cold war; to an extent Afghanistan is on Iran and China's border; let them deal with it if someone wants to play policeman

Very true, Afghanistan isn't in the middle east though!

Which would be ironic given their record of mistreating Muslims in their own country....

When Chinas involved profit and power vastly overrides iron.

Afghanistan has over 1,400 mineral fields, containing barite, chromite, coal, copper, gold, iron ore, lead, natural gas, petroleum, precious and semi-precious stones, salt, sulfur, talc, and zinc, among many other minerals. Gemstones include high-quality emerald, lapis lazuli, red garnet and ruby.

At least it gives everyone else a good idea of where most of them will be. If they keep Afghanistan fenced in and stop all the flights they can't go anywhere :D

I think the "plan" might be just leave and let them all fight it out among themselves, see how it turns out. It's not like any Islamic countries actually like eachother.
