Afghanistan - 20 years on

Cut Afghanistan in half. Call one side Talistan and let the Taliban have it and everyone who wants to live under Sharia law.

Call the other side new Afghanistan and let the others live there.

That way the world doesn't need to take in all the refugees, etc.

Yeah, perhaps you could snap up a few properties on the good side and make some stonks. Extending mud huts is easy and a few pegs for the pet goats are easy landlord stuff.

Trouble is, Russia and China are doing and will do what you say and there won’t be a response from the West. We did sod all about Ukraine. We are doing sod all about Hong Kong.

We aren’t a superpower, we aren’t the world’s police. I think we need to stop thinking we are.

Plenty of countries don’t get involved in conflicts and they are ok…

Countries like Ukraine and Hong Kong?

Or Iraq, Afghanistan or Syria?
Or Egypt?

Or lybia?

There's a reason we don't just sit and do nothing it's so that we keep the front line far far away.

Same as China and Russia do

That doesn't help your case.

He has 105 posts in that thread and the specific post you quoted doesn't say anything about Syria. so you would have had to go through them one at a time. Unless you remembered that very post and where searching what thread it was in. But it is a very unremarkable post to remember.

Apologies, it was "bomb" :)

You should read about the India/Pakistan transition to understand why that will result in chaos and death. (Yes, it is wikipedia, but just some casual reading: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Partition_of_India )

She's laying low while Biden takes the flack.

I think he's being used willingly or unwillingly as the patsy so she can be clean to take over

Laying low as nothing more than figurehead token VP more likely. Never give credit to cunning to what can be otherwise achieved by lack of experience and/or outright incompetence!

I don’t think the taliban would touch them. What’s the point in riskung their own lives and situation when the troops are leaving anyway?

The US et al have got an arrangement with the Taliban to let the troops go about their business and leave, their fighters are clearly under orders not to engage

Fact is Afghanistan will never have a good economy without the women being able to work. It's half the population.

They won't have a good economy the US will see to that the reason the Taliban is putting on a PR offensive trying to appear like cuddly teddy bears is because they want to get their hands on the billions of the Afghan national reserves, the americans made sure the funds got transferred to US soil as soon they got the chance as they always do. The money is currently frozen (surprise, surprise). They also hold billions of Iranian dollars also frozen since the Shah fell. They know where their priorities are: get hold of the cash. Its working in part though Boris seems convinced enough to hand over half a billion to a repressive regime.

The US will introduce sanctions soon enough though and cripple the economy just like Iran and everyone will wonder why they all hate the West so much and the US in particular. Biden has stated he reserves the right to bomb the place to bits if they step out of line so thats fine, right?

I'm well aware of the partition of india my grandad took part in it having to cross from one side to the other.

However there country is already under chaos and plenty of death happening on a daily basis.

But look at both countries today. India is doing well and Pakistan is a safe haven for terrorists. Similar would happen here but it's good to know who the good guys are and who the enemy is. At least you could track them all better if they were all contained within their own boundaries and the good guys on the other side of the border.

I don't know.
But at a guess. As the USA pay most of the NATO money.
NATO asks them to come to the rescue.

Afghanistan was a mistake that bush and blair should be in prison for.

Really? They tried to give their women some form of human rights. Or would you rather they be like malala and being shot for wanting an education?

That is just the media friendly new wave Taliban celebrating with gun fire. Peacefully, including women in their footage to show they are gender champions.

So Biden took how many days to return calls to Boris? turns out not until the evening of Tuesday... was that because he is incapable of thinking on his feet now so his backroom staff have to prepare a script to read, or he is just not interested/clueless?

I hope all the UK/US forces get out without any casualties because I really believe they will end up pulling this evacuation op off in spite of top level govt leadership.

I mean the Taliban were harboring Bin Laden, it seems reasonable to hunt the guy who killed 3,000 American citizens, that's an act of war

In the first few hours when it became apparent time was running out for Kabul there was a huge air lift op from the UK and US pulling in heavy lift capabilities, refuellers, etc. a massive operation spanning the whole globe. Shame the rest hasn't been as competent.
