Afghanistan - 20 years on

While not impossible. I think the Taliban want to maintain international relations. So that's unlikely. They've won. Nothing else to prove.

Exactly.

They won when Trump made the deal with them and didn't involve the Afghan government. This entire situation was pretty much set in stone once that deal was made.

Trump made it very very difficult for Biden to back out (politically) any attacks on US forces - post breaking the Taliban agreement would have been pinned on Biden
Its pretty clear that Biden has wanted out for a while now though so I doubt anyone could talk him out of it Trump agreement or not (it just forced an end date on something he wanted to do anyway)
I still don't agree though

Which important post out the 1885+ did I "miss"? your incorrect ones or something else?
do you have an alternative? gift them to the Taliban?

using your own logic perhaps people like yourself who have never been to Afghanistan shouldn't post about it

ianh - yes you could FARP somewhere but where to after that? nearest is gulf states so too far, even best case would be FARP at furthest south possible to a carrier off the Pakistan coast is till too far I think
Without a google I think we don't have friendly airfields north any more

All of it

No it wasn't, and people don't really disagree with the deal, they disagree with how it's been handled. Lack of communication between the US and allies, we're now scurrying around trying to get thousands of people out, Biden is inept and stupid, and then dismissive and condescending when faced with any criticism.

This.

That is assuming they want international relations with the West, it could be that they want relations with Iran, China and the rest of the none Western nations and to hell with the West.

A lot of kit was left including apache helicopters.
The weapons were owned by ANA. And there's no evidence of Apaches being left behind for the Taliban.

So those videos posted way back with the taliban must have been made up?
Yes, unless you can provide evidence, you've made it up.

In before "read the thread" & "I'm not going to spoon feed you" and other cop outs.

we're now scurrying around trying to get thousands of people out, .

If only the Trump admin hadnt hobbled the visa process for Afghans to get out sooner ay.....

Olivia Troye tweeted that Stephen Miller, a senior adviser to former President Donald Trump, teamed up with “enablers” to undermine anyone trying to get the allies out by “devastating” the special immigrant visa system at the departments of State and Homeland Security.

they haven't won yet though theres an area where loads of people are gathering to fight back supposedly.

maybe the UN/NATO whomever will decide we should be supporting these people AGAIN  and we go back to bombing the Taliban and they go back to wanting to bomb the west.

just leave them all alone let them deal with it themselves, the world tried for 20 years, nothing changed, peoples opinions didn't change.

the taliban are still the countries "freedom fighters" people don't see them as terrorists or an occupying forrce

what kind of education was Afghanistan teaching for the last 20 years? and what proportion of the country actually got an education? surely you'd expect a whole generation of people brainwashed against the taliban but it doesn't seem to have happened

You said the us wasn't involved. Blatantly untrue.

Nope, again major combat operations... and I've provided you with context already so don't play dumb. When was the last US KIA? When was the last major operation involving US ground forces? You're bringing up air strikes and SF... rather different!

It would only take a small number of heavy machine guns to lockdown the airport and the Taliban have them by the bucket load. Sure the US will flood the sky with attack helicopters to cover the withdraw but its could turn out to be a blood bath in the end for withdrawing Western forces, the Taliban hold all the deck right now while we make a run for the exit.

Yup, short of a major escalation and potentially risking having to fight to push the Taliban back from the airport then a deadline extension is pretty much reliant on Taliban approval now, not a great situation to be in, they've got the US, UK and allies over a barrel right now.

They've had several months now and Biden chose the date...
