Age restrictions on the sale of alcohol now TOO tight?

No need to be an ass thanks.

No offence mate but he's got a valid point. You could stand there and say you're 29 all day long, and you still will not get served. If it bothers you that much, spend £5 on a citizencard or something, as proof of ID, and you won't have this hassle! We can't risk getting on the spot £80 fines, which could increase to £5,000 depending on the circumstances of the offence, so we have to make sure we're obeying the law, whether it annoys you or not, I'm afraid :)

This is nothing to do with the law I'm afraid. It's just down to store policy. If you don't want to be refused sale, then carry ID. If you don't have any, get some (why on earth would you not have any?).

And regardless... I wouldn't even think to carry my passport with me, and my wallet (complete with hypothetical drivers license) would have been at home, since I just grabbed my bank card and keys and popped around the corner to the co-op. There is no reason I should need to have taken ID with me.

I am not being an ass. I am older than you by four years, yet I still get ID'd both for booze in shops and to get in pubs/clubs. I always carry the photocard part of my driving license thus I never have a problem. My step-son does not drive but carries his Portman Card and thus has hardly any problems.

So instead of moaning on a hardware forum be proactive and get and carry ID. If you think I am being an arse by telling you this tehn so be it. :p

You can side with the co-op if you like. But the point is I'm old and I look it. Thus being asked for ID is ridiculous.

And to all those "holier-than-thou", "you're in the wrong" types; I'm pretty sure you wouldn't feel the same were the shoe on the other foot. :)

seriously....the fact you look or dont look older does not matter 1 bit

fact is they have the right to request ID to anyone...if you dont have its your fault

get over it

But like I previously mentioned, this week (for co-op) is where all Area Managers and their cronies visit stores for their christmas "check-up" as it were. They may be being particularly vigilant due to this.

i'm 27, look 27 but always have some form of id on me. If i get stopped and asked for ID (rare but does happen, especially in morissons) then i have no issue with that.

The person selling the alcohol has a right for you to prove your age. a lot of places now won't sell to anyone under 21 without ID and some are going even higher than that. You only have to look at the number of stories in the press each week where some pensioner has been refused alcohol even though he is obviously 80+.

Its the state of the nation to in some respect. Everyone moans about people drinking underage and then also moan when they have to produce id to buy alocohol when the shopkeeper is obviously supposed to know exactly how old you are by how you look

Whenever I get asked for I.D it happens to be times when I have grabbed some money and left my driving licence at home. The other day I went to co-op to get some drinks for a party without my licence, was refused sale. Went home, got my licence went to a different co-op and wasnt asked!!

What really ****** me off was the checkout lady in Sainsbury's wouldn't sell me lemsip cus she didn't think I was 16!! I told her I was 20 showed her my driving licence and embarresed her a treat. I was in my work uniform buying everybodies lucnh, I thought that would be a dead givaway I was at least 16 or do we now have child labour again in th U.K!

Nobody is being "holier than thou" we just happen to carry ID so this never happens! :p

I agree, however this only applies to a point. Is there ANYONE who doesnt think it's ridiculous that the pensioner got asked to prove his age? As far as I'm concerned it's the same thing.

It's totally understandable that (as I already mentioned) teenagers and perhaps people in their early/mid twenties, but for someone who is quite OBVIOUSLY way over the 21 limit (let alone the 18 limit) it is just plain whacko.

I work pt along side my new job at this shop in Bradford.

I refused to serve this dude for cigs, he didnt look 18..

They have their jobs on the line... You have to take things like this inton consideration, i got annoyed once, but when i actually was on the other end of it, i relised that i couldnt really be the same again, you cant judt flip, because at the end of the day, if they serve someone under age, they can face a hefty fine or even dissmisal.

You should carry ID, its not hard to get hold of.

why on earth would you not have any?
Luckily I've never needed ID.

I don't drive, so don't have a license. I also refuse to pay 40 odd quid for a provisional when I have absolutely no intention of learning to drive, purely for ID purposes. Similarly all the other "accepted" forms of ID cost money and I don't see why I should have to pay to prove who I am.
I will not carry my passport with me unless I know it is needed (bank or holiday basically).
I have absolutely no idea where my birth certificate is.

I appreciate that stores have the right to not serve you. Fine with me - I also have the right not to use them. Its not exactly as though there is a shortage of places to get beer. Actually, I live in Croydon so I could get it from the chavs down by the bus stop if I was really desperate :D

All the shop assistants are paranoid becuase they can be fined thousands for selling drinks to underage people. So they just ask everyone.
