Airfix

A pretty poor diorama I did as a cedet:

I also worked on a spinning RAF regiment diorama showing 4 scenes, and a dam-busters one using 2 perspex rods to represent the light beams and hold op the lancaster.

Guys just thought I'd post this up.... http://www.tamiyausa.com/product/item.php?product-id=14114

Basically look through there and on the majority of the models (I've only looked at cars and bikes) it gives you the paints needed at the bottom of the page. Very useful as it means I can order stuff all in one go rather than waiting around to get the instructions in the box.

Thanks to Fusionhobbies for the useful tip :)

Cheers that's quite helpful. I have the tropical spitfire in 1:48 on the way to me and it lists the exact paints I require. Typical that I am missing several - doh!

Hi mate, loving your work. I really want the Pennzoil Skyline. Im about to order it now but I was just wondering if you have the paint codes needed for this car so I can order them all in one go?

Sorry, I've only just seen this post.. I didn't use many Tamiya paint codes, I used Aclad II metal paints, and zero model paints from www.hiroboy.com. I use some acrylics, but I mainly use Tamiya Enamels, Aclad II or zero custom mixed paints.... I tend to have Tamiya acrylic blacks to hand... Well, when I do find time to build..

And its an excellent kit to build, and thanks for saying you like my work..

i got a fair way with my model but just suddenly stopped.. i wonder where it is. i might dig it out later. bit of a shame really because my workmate lent me his Aztec spray modelling gun as he bought a new iwata. i dont have a compressor for it though. just a can of compressed air.

I used to have this really cheap airbrush that required compressed air - it was actually quite good if i recall. Something along the lines of this :- http://www.modelsforsale.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=70299

aye, im kinda scared to use it as i have no experience in using any sort of spray gun. gotta start somewhere i guess. here is the one i have been lent...

i got it with a can of revell compressed air. i think the can of air might be a bit inconsistent though.

So you just guessed at the closest matching colours then? I'm not really sure how to go about this, Im guessing the yellow and black are sprayed on? But I don't have an airbrush :(

Do all models need to be primed?

Well in a way, yes and no... lol I had the owner of www.hiroboy.com mix me the yellow and black and I airbrushed the paint onto the model..

As you've not got an airbrush, you might need to look at the Tamiya TS spray cans... But I believe they are not currently available in the UK due to some labeling issue?

Tamiya do a yellow and a black, as well as a spray silver for the chassis that matches the Pennzoil Skyline pretty well... If you can actually buy them in the UK at the moment..

As for primer, I used a Holts Plastic Bumper spray can, you can buy this from any autostore or Halfords so an own brand plastic primer. You'll need both grey and white... Don't apply yellow over grey primer, the colour will come out all wrong..

Air cans will not provide a decent flow of air... If you really can't get hold of an air compresser, see if you can get an old car tire, fill this with air, and buy a hose that can fit on both your airbrush and the tire air valve... About the cheapest option...

Thanks for the quick reply. I've been looking and I've found alternative colours but as you say, they are currently unavailable as sprays.

Does it tell me in the instructions which primer to use where?

EDIT : Just a thought, could I use normal car body spray from halfords for the yellow black & silver?

Reason I've always used an airbrush, spray cans are too expensive and sometimes hard to find anyhow..

As for primer... Well I normally primer just about the whole lot, as it not only helps you see imperfections, it gives a good base for the top colours to stick to, and sometimes with certain airbrushable paints, the paint is really hot and etches into plastic, and it can melt..

Obviously Tamiya paints don't do this, but if you went into Halfords and got a can of custom mixed car paint spray, they can melt bare plastic.. Reason you need to use PLASTIC primer, comes in 500ml can from Halfords... Good stuff.. Goes a long way...

edit: just seen your edit, and yes you can use Halfords spray cans... just make sure you use a good plastic primer beforehand to seal the plastic, and prevent the etching and melting as I mentioned...

Ok thanks for that :) Halfords it is then.

Sorry for all the questions but I have one more. :o

You said I need white and grey primer and not to use grey underneath the yellow...

Should I use white everywhere then? Is there any point me buying the grey?

You'll need both. You need grey for everything apart from where the top colour will be either -

White
Yellow
some blues
red

as grey primer will be too dark and change the overall colour of the top coat. So just apply a few coats of white over the grey and you'll be sorted.. White primer over yellow plastic (as I know the body in this kit is yellow) doesn't work well... Don't ask why, it just doesn't..

Also, please, do not attempt to apply all the paint in one go. Apply spray paint in several coats, light coats for primer, until covered..

Top coats with a spray can, a few light coats, then a few good coverage coats, and then a final what they call a wet coat.. Watch it shine afterwards..

Here, good guide on here -

That'll help you on your way to preparing and painting model car bodies..

Thats brilliant thanks for that, just ordered all my tamiya acrylics and the pennzoil Skyline :D

Next on my list is grit paper, plastic primer (grey and white ;)), Halfords Fiat Broom yellow, halford black and halfords silver spray paints.

I already have some revell glue, tweeers, nail files.

Think that should be everything :)

Interesting comment on the primer. I've only just started to use primer on my models as I was having a few issues with airbrush particles almost dripping off smaller plastic parts. I've got a can of Tamiya white and an airbrushable grey. They vallejo grey is so much better than the Tamiya stuff which seems to have the consistancy of clay and takes a good 48 hours to dry! But I can't say I've noticed a big difference what colour the primer is. All airbrush paints seem to cover the primer perfectly, providing of course you give the part a couple of coats. I might actually move over to Vallejo paints as they seem to take better and are much easier to feed into my airbrush. 3 drops Vallejo to 1 drop thinner is what I have been doing.

Well here is my latest - an airfix 1:72 Hawker Tempest from 1945. I've had some fun painting this as it uses completely different colours to the Spitfire from 1940. It's not a bad model for £6. Quite tricky in places and once again the decals were a nightmare!

Had a rummage earlier and found these pics:

I made these a few years ago along with the F4 Phantom I posted a pic of earlier in the thread. Thinking about it, I must have made hundreds since 1986 when I first started.:D
A mixture of tamiya and hasegawa I think, 1.48 scale, finished in xtracolor paint and humbrol matt varnish
