Airfix

Ive never used them to be honest, would they hand brush alright? my airbrush doesnt get used at all, due to it eating paint like no tomorrow, i use less hand brushing.

I've just looked in my cupboard. I still have some beautiful Airfix models to make. I've managed to collect the 1:24 ones, which I have picked up cheap! I got the Polish Spitfire from Whsmiths for £25! Bargain or what. I have also got the Stuka and another different variation Spitfire. Considering these retail at around £60 each I feel quite chuffed, although it has taken me a number of years to find them cheap. I've also got a Lancaster with canopy masks and a few other smaller models. Unfortunately I haven't managed to find the time to make any recently - looking after a 3 year old is oh so time consuming.

You know the only problem looking at other peoples work, it makes you realise just how sub par your own work is compared to them :(

While im here, if anyone can help finding a revell alternative to humbrol 127 and 64 i would be most greatful for my merlin hc.3 - according to most sources 127 says medium grey for revell, but thats just plain grey, where as the cabin is almost blueish, hate models at times hehe.

I think I mentioned this before but I'd look at the Mr Color range of acrylic paint from "ModelRgo". They're designed for use in an airbrush, have the BS and FS numbers for cross referencing, and are very nice to use and having a very smooth finish when sprayed, decals will sit on them nicely with no need for a gloss coat to be applied first. Just check that the paint your looking has a "semi matt" finish not " matt" :)
I personally don't use Valejo paints as I can't get on with them (that doesn't mean they're no good as loadsa people use them) just I'm "used to working with Mr Color.

Humbrol 127 is 32143 in Revell.
Humbrol 64 is 32175 in Revell.

I have this same problem with my Gunpla models but I'm getting there,

here are my smaller 1/144 scale models they normally take me a few weeks to build at the rate to do (few hours a week) I keep them on my desk at work

This is my latest work on a 1/100 scale model more parts more details, There was a lot of firsts here, first time using varnish, decals, damage effects, using cement/glue and sanding to get rid of seam-lines and part gaps and weathering powered. My best work by far but still nothing on the pros. This guy took 3-4 months to finish

At some point i will try and do some physical customization.

I've been using mostly Humbrol paints and products with some Tiyama. Only started Gunpla building as a hobby around 18-24 months ago and painting them 9-12 months ago

Reading this thread brings back memories of me being round my friends house over 20 years ago and playing with his Airfix models, we had them all laid on his lawn in the back garden and I went out for a spin on his bike, and I came steaming into the back garden and he shouted the breaks don't work, I rode straight over the wing and rear of his Lancaster bomber.

:o

I've just posted a thread on Florymodels site asking for the relevant colour codes (BS and/or FS numbers) for an RAF Merlin helicopter for you. There should be a few replies some time later hopefully. Once you've got the numbers, its a simple job to pick the right colours from any paint range you want (but I'd still recommend Mr Color);)

Going to order the eduard spit tonight and relevant paints (If anyone has the paint codes that would be amazing :) ). Does anyone know a reasonable priced good airbrush to start off with? After seeing these results I just cannot accept a brush finish :p

Depends what markings you want to do mate, is it the early or late model?

http://www.eduard.com/store/out/media/8281.pdf is the manual for the late version.
http://www.eduard.com/store/out/media/8282.pdf is the manual for the early one.

Have a flick through and choose your markings and then work out which ones you need.

As a rough guide, I neded the following to paint the spit I posted earlier.

All Mr hobby paints, which along with Pieman I highly recommend.

Mr Hobby Aqueous

FLAT RED H013
FLAT BLACK H012
YELLOW H004
RUSSET H033
SKY H074
GREEN H312
LIGHT GULL GRAY H051
TIRE BLACK H077
WHITE H316
DARK GREEN H330
DARK SEAGRAY H331
LIGHT AIRCRAFT GRAY H332

Mr Hobby Metallic

ALUMINIUM MC218
DARK IRON MC214

Blimey, thanks so much for such a detailed reply :D Really appreciate you taking the time to do that. I think especially after you showing me the 2 variants I'd like the Spitfire LFMk.IXc, ML135, flown by Jerry Billing, No. 401 Squadron, France, July 1, 1944 Which is the late version. Think the same as what Pieman has posted. Really like the D day markings.

Didn't realise this thread was busy again! Here's some pics of my first ever model I finished off just before Christmas...

Shame about the decals silvering - It stands out like a sore thumb (although not as bad as in a photo) and was incredibly irritating but I know for next time to use some decal setter. Next up is an Eduard BF110 I'm about half way through, thoroughly enjoying the hobby so far!

Right, the overall color is dark green (RAF) markings and is BS381C481 and is at the bottom of page 8 here:

http://www.modelsrgo.co.uk/paints/acrylic/mr-hobby-gunze-sangyo-en-2.html#8

and the interior grey is more than likely BS381C/627, second one down on page 9

Looking good mate!

Cosmic. Get yourself some tweezers, sprue cutters and a decent craft knife. Also one of the most useful things I've used is blue tack. its brilliant for masking camouflage and also great for holding parts while you fix things to them.

Tamiya 10mm masking tape is very close to being spot on for the invasion stripes, if you want to be exact you'll need to shave a mm or two off, if not (like me) it was close enough.

That's a MiG-23, you can tell the difference between that and -27 from the shape of the nose. The -23 has a pointed radome housing a fire control radar, whereas the -27 has a sort of flat ducks's bill type nose, that houses a laser range finder/ designator for ground targets, seeing as the -27 was a dedicated close air support aircraft, and the -23 an interceptor/ air superiority fighter.

Sorry :( [/plane geek]

Don't be sorry at all. I didn't know that. :)

I prefer the poly cement with the needle-like tip, also its quite thin. Also PVA for transparencies and you'll need some cyano for the photo etched parts, applied with a cocktail stick is how I do it.

DAMMIT what have you done to me, I don't have space for more! :(
