Airfix

Wow, seeing this thread has inspired me.
I absolutely loved model making as a kid. Me and my dad used to build Airfix 1:72 planes and hang them from the ceiling. Then later moved onto making Tamiya 1:35 tanks. All 1940's stuff as I was (and still am) really interested in that period of military history.
I was never much good at painting them back then, now I'm a lot older with a lot more patience I suddenly feel compelled to have another go at it..

**Update**

Progressed the cockpit tonight. This my first time with Photo Etch, so I'm taking it slow but sure. The PVA in the dials will be clear once completely dry.

That is some serious detail. What did you use? a cocktail stick?

Just went to spray a handmade pyramid for my son and the airbrush is just not playing. I've got a H&S Evolution and it has been very reliable until recently. For whatever reason now it sprays whatever contents I pour into the cup back out of the cup. Bubbles galore. I think there must be trapped air somewhere, but I've checked all the connections, and my compressor. Just not sure what else to test. I can't even spray water even though the airway is clear. Yet I can feel airflow when I spray my hand.

I'm the same. Looking at the results some people get I can't help but want to have another go but I really want to get into airbrushing as well. The only thing stopping me is the initial cost for something that might not hold my interest as much as I hope.

I've watched most of the Buypainted videos on YouTube and although they're WarHammer stuff, the effects and processes can be applied to any model and the results are amazing (in my opinion!).

you have a blocked nozzle which will need careful cleaning.

H&S doe a brush and nozzle reamer set which will clean it all out.

I get that all the time. Its more than likely the seal behind the nozzle, not the small white one, but the larger black one that sits behind the screwthread. What happens is, it leaks air back into the barrel of the airbrushand some of the air goes through into the color cup, so causing bubbles. The remedy is to tighten up the nozzle where it screws into the end of the airbrush or replace the seal. You could remove the seal, clean out the area where its fitted and refit and see if that cures it. Otherwise its a new seal needed.

Right, I've got a 1:72 scale F-14A to paint in due course. More in that later.

It will be plinthed if you like on a same scale section of carrier deck simulating take off and with blast ramps up.

Any tips in how to paint the deck ? I'm assuming black undercoat to start ?

Any Ocuk members here going to Telford next weekend? if so post here and maybe we can organise a meet up :)

Missed this post, what did I miss?

Have any of you used a spray booth with spray paints rather than an airbrush?

Is the extraction still OK?

Depending on the spray booth and the aerosol, I'd say always spray them outside as most booths unless you go upto a really powerful one used in a fairly well ventilated area won't cope with cans.

Hi,

I can finally reveal my finished 1/48 Airfix English Electric Canberra PR.9 represented a No.1 PRU, Royal Air Force Wyton, November 1985 aircraft.

  • Kit manufacturer: Airfix (A10103)
  • Scale: 1/48
  • Type: Canberra PR.9
  • Extras used: Eduard Zoom Photo etch for the cockpit/Ejector seat.
  • Paints and colours used: Underside is Mr Hobby Aqueous H332 (Light Aircraft Grey), Top camo is Tamiya XF-81 (Dark Green 2 (RAF)), Tamiya XF-24 (Dark Grey), for the cockpit Tamiya XF-69 (Nato Black) and Mr Hobby Aqueous H1 (gloss white) for the undercarriage bays. Klear used for gloss coats and W&N acrylic satin varnish for final sealing coat. Flory Models dark dirt was used for weathering/panel wash.
  • Other info: Full build is here :

This is the first build I have used photo etch on. Definitely worth it for the cockpit alone. Details on the rest of the kit are reasonable given it's been around a few years and probably the best example of this aircraft in this scale. I feel it's the best finished kit I have done but still got a lot more to learn.
