Airfix

No worries. I think I will get the fine one.
Bummer, wanted inexpensive model so I would not worry much if I mess it up painting it, and just realised that Panther I ordered (Tamiya 35065) is very old and inaccurate kit...

I know how you feel. I never worked on ships before so starting with this since it's got few parts and should be easy enough but the parts are insanely small.

Really, I should had got a cheap set and was looking on eBay but just couldn't find anything, so I just went ahead anyway, I done 40k before so used to modelling so I won't make such a bad job but I try my best.

So far am doing okay, I made a few mistakes but it's better I learn now before I start working on my bigger ships like Haruna and Kaga and the like.

I have a build log here: http://forum.model-space.co.uk/default.aspx?g=posts&t=13424 ;)

I get my desk light tomorrow so that will really help with building this and the others. :D

Wow, it is small big ship.
I have a nice Meng model sitting in a box here and while I'm reasonably confident that I can put it together I have never painted models before, so thought I'll try spray something quickly with cans, try to weather it. Seems unreasonable to get airbrush kit at this stage :D

Thanks IronWarrior. I think I will get a primer and a Tamiya spray to act as the main paint coat as I don't have access to an airbrush. Then do all the weathery stuff.

Some of your bits look tiny!

How is the Matilda coming along?

Fine thanks, Cosimo - all built now. I'm nervous about painting it as it is such a good model, so have been putting it off, but I'll get some spray cans and weathering stuff and get to it soon. :)

Panzer IV next for me, probably.

My 11 year old son has decided he wants to start modelling, he was given an Airfix 1/72 Spitfire from some one last Christmas so I thought it would be a good starting point for farther to show son how its done :)

I used to do a lot of modelling myself about 10 years ago and still had all my kit in the loft, all my Tamiya paints (about 100 pots) have survived ok as have my Vallejo paints (about 50) but I also had loads of Games workshop paints and they have all pretty much dried up :(

Just a quick note about undercoat, I use Halfords grey primer or even red primer if you want to simulate the red oxide under coat on German WWII tanks, I usually airbrush with Tamiya paints and have never had any problems with it reacting with the Halfords primer.

Spotted an unpriced Airfix 1:12 1930 4.5 Litre Bentley in a department store today. Asked the store assistant to price it up at the till, and it came up as £27! RRP for this kit is £99 :-)

Too good a bargain to miss!

:D

Which store did you get this from?
My dad has this car (minus the blower!) and I would love to make him a smaller version for his birthday.

Does that kind of extra detail come with the kit, or did you have to model them yourself?
If you did model it yourself what did you use?

It looks so impressive. I can't wait to see the finished model :)

The only extras I used were Eduard seat belts and resin windshield and canopy, all the rest is provided in the kit, and theres an awful lot of plastic in the box, over 500 pieces I think. I just finished the model last night, except for the fuselage whip aerial), heres a few pics:

That is fabulous Pieman. I take it you are not going to gloss it in any way? I was kind of surprised when I went to an airshow recently and got up close to a Spitfire. It was completely covered a kind of glossy lacquer. Also, how do you achieve the authentic looking chips and weathering?

No mate, I'm going to leave the finish as it is. Its a sort of matt finish with a slight gloss as most operational aircraft ended up with a flat finish due to weather conditions, paint bleaching, oil stains, ultra violet light from the sunlight, etc. Plus, theres a "scale effect" which means that a correct gloss finish would tend to look over glossy and not look "right" as it were.
For the paint chipping I use a "prismasol" silver pencil available from "modelsRgo" which means you can put any chipping exactly where you want it with full control. Just make sure you've got a pencil sharpener handy as you need a very fine point.
The weathering was done with Flory's dark dirt wash, then picked out with an oil based wash then oversprayed very randomly in lightened and darkened base colors, dark green and ocean grey.
