***AKG Q701 Official Owners Thread***

Paid my customs fee and they are supposedly coming Tuesday.

Surely the customs charge should have been included in the postage fee, and the fact that it isn't should be a cause for us to moan and for them to hopefully reimburse us the fee?

So I wanted to re-do the headband on mine as the material shape wasn't even on both sides plus I wanted to slack it out a bit so it naturally padded the headband rather than be flat as a board.

This time I used black stitching :p

Happy now Sonny?! ;)

Do note that you won't get them modded with a sewing machine as the headband is non removable! The buckles on each end must be busted off and new bolts put on if you do remove it for machine stitching :p

If this lasts a year then after that I will probably buy a piece of cow hide, double fold it and stitch together then break off the headband and bolt on the cow hide to be the new headband.

Order placed on those memory foam earpads btw, €100 :(
Still. upshot is even with the pads the total cost is still a lot cheaper than buying just the Q701s alone online :p

I will of course report back as things develop :p

The initial sharpness in the highs I noticed with these during the first few days have completely gone now. There's more warmth in the sound and dare I say it but the warmth is similar to that on the X1. Soundstage remains wider but without the harshness isn't there any more, just detail in abundance.

This is good!

As much as people argue the benefits of "burn in", more often than not they agree when it comes to the AKG K700/Q700 series. A lot of people don't even think they are worth listening to until they have between one and three hundred hours of use on them. Mine have around 200 hours on them now and they sound a lot smoother than they did originally.

I've had two Qs one new and one 2 years old. Compared them both and noticed the newer one sounded a bit looser in the bass area but I'm talking really discrete! Most wouldn't notice it. A lot is probably just people getting used to the sound. The Qs still sound sharp to me coming from something like the Annie or K712 but when I listen to the Qs for a couple of days they sound smooth at reasonable volumes.

I do believe in burn in but all this 300-500 hour talk is just over the top personally. From test I've done on AKG 701s and Denon D600s two of each it took around 10-12 hours for the AKGs to sound identical and 15 hours for the Denons. The Newer Denons had looser bass that was really boomy and a bit of an unrefined treble with mids that sounded too over shadowed. After the time, they sounding like the older pair more mature.

Burn in is interesting and I would love to run more test but sadly my headphone buying days are gone.

I agree actually, the 100~300 is crazy. It's not "burn in" as nothing gets hot, more like bedding in but I did notice quite a big difference over the first 20~30 hours and now they just sound schweet! :D

What are you going to be doing instead of buying headphones? I take it you've found your end game phones now with the 712's?

Yeah I did always wonder why the term burn it was named that Lol

The K712 fit all my needs for my gaming rig. I don't really think anything can beat them as an all rounder. The closest I've heard is the HD800 and even then I prefer the warmth and more natural soundstage than the HD800.

I've sold the Annie's. They were actually end game for me but they had some problems, replacing the pads would cost a fortune. I'm hoping to buy some HD650s again or HD600s just because of the replaceable parts for long term. I want a headphone that's going to last me about 5 years or more.

I was going to get the LCD2 but they sound not that much better than the Annie. That will probably be it and I'll just stick to reviewing and sending them back instead of stressful buying and selling.

I'll probably be done when I get some HD 650's - between those and my 702m's I have most areas covered. I do intend getting a Vali to be fed by the Aune T1 and that will be that side done for me too, except for the odd bit of tube hunting on ebay :D
