I was looking at your X1s but I have HD650s and I think they are quite similar sounding from what I've read so I'd like to try something like the Q701s.Did you try the bass mod? It makes a good differenceAlso what source for amplification?
My X1 has 18 watchers with 1 bid currently. With less than a day left I expect the bidding to go into full swing soon!

Mrk you tell me did the bass mod make a big enough difference to give them same kind of bass the X1 gives in movies? To my ears the stock 701 is destroyed in bass by the X1, can the mod really make that much of a difference?

No idea what that amp is like but on my D 3020 the 701s with bass mod do punch quite a bit lower than at stock. Not as deep as the X1 but much closer than without opening the bass port up. Easily enjoyable for movies now to the point I don't miss the heavier bass of the X1 any more.

X1 and the HD650 are nothing alike the HD650 is hi-fi and the x1 is a mid fi headphone with a lot of bass for an open can
they are power hungry it's not just the impedance you need to look at but how much power they consume at that impedance, they require a very good amp.

They couldn't be more different. The HD650 has really intimate mids while the X1s mids sound more distant.
HD650 is warmer, smoother, mellower with better refinement. The only similarity is that they are both on the warmer side.

I got my card on Thursday I could have picked them up this morning but I couldn't be bothered tbh.
I will pick them up first thing tomorrow the sorting office opens 7am - 2pm.
I'm in no rush anyway as I'm busy all day, I will be picking them up and sticking them in the wardrobe for a few weeks. I have no spare time atm I got weddings to go to (parties), extra work on at the weekends too as well as late shifts everyday.
i've been trying to play destiny beta for the past week and i've managed no play time at all, atm I have zero spare time, so they won't see any use for a while.

Hopefully I will miss customs second time around or I will have really dropped the ball given I had the first time! I am still waiting for Massdrop to retake ownership of my parcel before we re arrange delivery so I am yet to know if I will be charged again ( very likely).
Goes without saying I am pretty much set on keeping these now given the cost I am likely to incur, if no extra cost is incurred however unlikely it is I will take as a sign they are meant to be kept.
I feel as though you're exaggerating after all you did end with they are both warm, whereas Q701s from what I've heard are anything but. I think the difference between q701s and hd650 is bigger than the difference between hd650 and x1 but tbf I haven't tried them so you might well be right.

Just because two headphones are warm doesn't make them similar in signature. Like I said the 650 are an intimate headphone with a mid centric sound while the X1 is more of a U shaped headphone with extended treble and extended but linear bass with a harder and more dry sound.
The Qs are slightly warmer than the previous models but not close to the HD650.

Well, mine finally arrived
Had to collect them from the sorting office this morning and pay the £25, but oh well.
Listening to them, I am not seeing where the "lack of bass" everyone is talking about is coming from. Maybe as I have never heard the X1s, I am missing something, or I just prefer my audio to not shake my head, or everyone else as poor low frequency hearing, but I think the sound is perfectly weighted across all frequencies.
Readin up on the bass mod, to some people is closes the sound stage by doing it, so I am happy to leave them.
I have them connected from my Zune, through a Fiio E7.
Going to try them in a bit connected to my RX-V673 amp using an SACD source to see if the sound is even better with a better source.
In comparison to my AKG K550s, it will take a bit longer to compare them, but the main difference is the closed vs open back sound stage. The sound is very nice, but I do kind of prefer the isolation of the closed back, so things like open windows (in this heat) don't interrupt.

the bass mod does close up the sound stage but only from immense to huge

I've been swapping between X1 and Q701 today for a last listen on the X1 and indeed the soundstage is wider even post bass mod (I noticed no difference to soundstage after mod anyway). The X1 headband id more comfortable even after I modded mine but I think that is mostly helped by the memory foam earpads to the point where I'm actually considering dropping the £60 odd for the AKG Annie pads for the 701 as I like the memory foam so much :S

Apparently the memory foam pads are a little thinner than the stock pads so your ears are a bit closer to the driver which explains the extra bass (around 3dB). Makes sense.
