Alien: Romulus - Fede Alvarez (Evil Dead) to write/direct

I also felt it was really loud, I watched it in a new IMAX theatre so I was not sure if that had anything to do with it.....better speakers etc.

Imax is always worth it if available for the sound, some people sat near us thought the film had an issue with no sound when it started even though it was a space scene until the first noise kicked in and then moaned it was too loud.

I have no intention to watch this until it comes on Netflix/Prime etc, but I just watched the Pitch Meeting. Ryan George really does really does know how to destroy movies.

*I will watch it eventually and probably enjoy it like I did with Alien 3 and 4...

Watching a pitch movie of something you intend to watch is baffling to me.

I love those, but always wait until I've seen the movie, or watch ones for films I know I won't ever watch.

The mix is too loud, and I find this to be pretty common with cinematic audio these days. There seems to be no middle ground; silence or thunderous noise!

Just back from an NCD showing. I really enjoyed it overall. I'm not the biggest Alien franchise fan so would miss any lore issues (although I have seen all of the films). I thought they got the sets and 'feel' exactly right and liked the Jackson's Star colony too.

It would be too easy to criticise the actions of the characters, at least one of them will do something stupid. That's the same as any 'horror' type of film.

Andy was my favourite character overall, the actor did a great job.

I liked the line "humans weren't built for the colonisation of space" (or something like that). It was especially ironic coming from a synth, you would think a human or even a synth would suggest that the synths do the colonisation and report back the findings to humans / send back the resources they find.

I also thought it was really stupid from the humans / Rook not to identify an easy way to kill the aliens once they'd got the genetic information. I'm sure an AI / synth would have done that.

It also felt like the synths were being portrayed as psychopaths but for the most part they tried to do the rational thing (apart from cross-breeding humans and aliens).

My take on this is
Synths likely cost a lot of money to make, and a lot of the humans in Weyland-Yutanui controlled space are essentially serfs. It's probably cheaper for the company to use human labour than mass produce synths to do it. Rook mentioning that humans weren't built for that is why they were looking at using the black goo for bio-engineering - Yes to stop the disease killing humans, but they also want a stronger workforce - Perhaps ones that can operate in the mines and colonies without the expensive suits and equipment to go with it.

Was really looking forward to this and thought it was lame
Why...
1. So basically the only actors were what 6 people? And they were maybe 20yoa tops? And some of their acting reminded me of taking the train on a friday nite back from london.
2. So these kids have access to a spaceship? - I thought they were like broke miners and they have a ship that can fly 9 light years away?
3. When the aliens were going to come after the girl/and andy they sure moved slow. I just watched aliens and those things came at them quickly. I know part of the time they messed with the gravity but still.
4. You could guess a lot of how the scenes were going to play out based on 'hollywood's previous movies.
a. the temperature thing and then having to run when they were sweating etc...
b. the alien getting in the girl face and hissing etc but of course not getting killed
c. the girl (forgot her name) killing the tall alien in a bit of a lame way.

Maybe its just because I had it hyped in my head so much but definitely down on my alien score card list. I remember seeing covenant at the theatre and thought that wasnt very good but imo it was much better then this. At least we had adult actors and the plot was somewhat believable.

1: So was Alien in terms of actor numbers, and even the actual age of the primary cast - but these are meant to be young adults (mid 20's) stuck on a planet that won't let them leave, basically change in language since the 70's.
It's worth noting that doing a bit of a dive in the alien lore, the main character is about the same age that Ripley was when Ripley signed onto the Nostromo, but different background.

2 They were workers on a planet that did mining, one of them was a pilot for the company and the space craft can't do 9 light years without substances and equipment the company controls extremely carefully normally (hence the trip to the abandoned ship/station) at least with a live crew, not to mention the whole thing the company that owns the spaceship also basically owns the planet and everything on it so normally any misuse of the equipment would get you in such serious trouble "security" for the space ship is not a question. IIRC the likes of large passenger aircraft in real life also have little in the way of anti theft measures, as the fact they're at a secured airport is enough (and the pilots can disable them enough to stop someone who doesn't know what they're doing from starting them). Even military fighter aircraft that are armed usually have at most a symbolic lock, as the real anti theft deterrent is the number of armed security around it.

3: The aliens come fast or slow depending on situation, they're stalking hunters a lot of the time when they are unsure of the threat level or are trying to be stealthy whilst their numbers are slow, also as you say they messed with gravity if you're unaware that's going to happen and get caught out you're very much stuck unless you can basically throw/squirt something or "swim" against the air.

4: fair, but that's often the case if you've seen enough films of a similar type.
a: IIRC you sweat to try and cool down as your normal skin cooling isn't enough, once you hit about 30c ambient you tend to struggle to cool down, so having the room at skin temperature is going to cause you to sweat as you and the room are now the same temperature.
b: I think I remember a couple of scenes similar to that from the other films, the alien doesn't always kill and will often prefer to injure/capture the prey alive to increase the hive, and in the other films that's shown to have given people a chance to do something.
c: a little lame, but a call back to Alien and one of the only ways you can kill/deal with a xenomorph without access to weapons - find a way to get the environment to do it (or at least incapacitate it). In Alien Ripley got it out the airlock and tried to fry it, in Aliens 3 they set an elaborate trap.

Still killing it

"Breaking down the weekend, Alien: Romulus was the top Hollywood title as the Fede Alvarez-directed franchise installment gobbled up another $22.6M overseas in the 3rd frame, taking the international cume to $194.7M. Worldwide is at $283.5M through Sunday (these figures do not include the domestic holiday Monday estimates). The $283.5M makes Romulus the second biggest in the Alien series globally, behind only Prometheus."

Weird that Covenant is considered a bomb, when it made $240 million on a $97 million budget.

It was **** though.

I think they were expecting it to make similar figures to Prometheus at 400m +, that's a pretty sharp decline from the previous movie and didn't exactly incentivize the IP owners to finish the trilogy.
