Unfortunately I cannot disclose what I believe to be the cause. it would be most unfair in the current environment.

I disagree with the comment in your third paragraph. The implication that by calling Manchester United 'scum' we are implying that all of their fans are also scum. This is not the case.
I am going to use the word hate here, but this is hatred in a footballing sense. This is different to hatred in Real Life™ to me, I believe there to be a very different definition of the two.,
I feel hatred for 'Sir' Alex Ferguson. I feel hatred for most of the Manchester United players. I even feel hatred for some of the fans. For this to be replicated to each and every fan is untrue. Many of the fans (the ones that would
never be classed as a football fan by many of the users of the sports forum) that don't even follow the results, but when you ask them who they support, their instant answer is "Manchester United"
These are the ones bringing the bad name to the club. The ones who have no idea what it is to play football, nor even go to a match, yet will indignantly declare their team as the best, though they know not WHY!
Scum is a term used very commonly throughout English football, so to me, to see it banned from this forum (which is inherently dominated by football) would be a farce.
