If I had to guess I'd say it was done to get him off the wage bill first and foremost.

Well it looks like AVB is going to play a style that relies heavily on goals from midfiled. Sig, Dempsey, Dembele, Bale, Lennon can all score goals.... not so sure about our forwards. Ade will score 15 but require 1000 chances, Defoe will score about 11, 8 of them from outside the box.
AvB likes his certain formation with wingers that can get goals, that's certainly where Dempsey fits in and is a better option than Aaron Lemon.
I think Tottenham have strengthened well considering the departures of VdV and Modric.
This whole wage bill thing is a massive exaggeration - we've barely cut our wage bill, just the way the money is being distributed. Dempsey wouldn't have been joining on much less (if at all) than Carroll was earning.
Doesn't care about football as much as he likes to make out. Set for life with the money he has. May as well retire.

Cole is complete rubbish, Sterling is 17 years old and completely unproven, as in completely and utterly, and Assaidi, well..... we all know how well dutch goal scoring translates into the rest of europe don't we... considering he wasn't some 30 goal a season player either.
Not much worse off is rather insane frankly, Suarez has trouble finding the net, you haven't signed a single proven goal scorer, and you've lost 1 very very good player in Bellamy, a hard working player in Kuyt who did get goals somehow and Maxi, good for 4 goals a season
He's actually a very neat finisher, but rubbish on the wing, his interplay/creating/crossing/general work down the wing was poor, his finishing of tap in chances that Suarez seems incapable of scoring was brilliant though, why you never played him as an out and out striker for that reason I don't know.Dempsey would have offered you the ability to play any of the front three roles, would have been a proven EPL goal scorer, and would have cost next to nothing, the fact that they underbid Villa's ridiculously low offer is honestly completely pathetic. If I was Fulham and they bid 4mil I would have refused to do business with them flat out, its insulting especially after they unsettled the player. 1-2mil more in their offer and you had a 15goal a season player, absolutely ridiculous sum to mess around over, insane.
Not really, lots of clubs have screwed up, he isn't bound by the transfer window, his bargaining position only gets better after the transfer window is closed and any team desparate for any striker at all has almost no other option

well, you were willing to pay for sig! dempsey isn't a cert and i'm not 100% sure on it but he wanted to sign for you! you've shipped carroll out, you would be silly to not sign him.
We weren't willing to pay him £60k per week though.
Agree it was crazy to let Carroll go if we didn't have somebody lined up but it's pretty clear that Dempsey wanted to join us.
