If we're on a fairly level playing field about Hazard, we can assume these things from a Man Utd perspective: Fergie wants him. We've offered Lille enough money (£32m~) and offered the player a lucrative enough deal.

The past season (and probably longer) we've moved more towards a 4-2-3-1 of sorts, but it's always reported as a 4-4-2.

We look like this (with people fit) -

Rooney often drops behind the other striker and plays anywhere between central midfield, attacking midfield and as a striker.

As Rooney is our best striker (and the others aren't great compared), he needs to be told to play as a striker and stay up front, he could easily go into the position of Welbeck/Hernandez and Hazard can sit behind him. Kagawa could do this too.

Nani, Young and Valencia can be rotated based on form, injuries, etc.

That central midfield position is still a concern, and we need someone to go alongside Carrick. We have quite a few people who can play CM but perhaps we could sign someone fairly cheap too?

So, hopefully Fergie will agree with me (:o) and explain to Hazard that he'll be playing in behind Rooney, perhaps occasionally out wide but not often. I don't quite see how Chelsea can do this when they don't have a manager and we don't know how they will line up...? City can probably give him that role as well, but they've got plenty of attacking players! :p

Ps. sorry for the football 'managerness'. :(

there were rumours on a few sites that Fergie wants to move to two AM's with a single "central" player like Carrick behind them. Baring in mind Cleverley's box to box style play at the beginning of this season it would be possible for another AM like Hazard to create the sparks centrally in the opposing half (if Utd were to aquire his talents)

I think the only reason why its been 2 deep sitting CM's majority of this season si because of Scholes' aging legs and his (for the most part) astonishing long range passing / relatively weak defence with Vidic missing.

All for Rooney being pushed up further towards the goal - but Im wondering if that MIGHT mean his temprament issues returning just because he sees less of the ball further up he goes......

Cleverley is no where near good enough for that team

I disagree. At the start of the season he looked fantastic. He hasn't been the same in the few games he has played in recent months but he was out for the whole season nearly.

We were steamrolling teams until he got injured and we had to go back to slow boring midfield play from Carrick.

Congratulations you're both wrong :D

I really hope that is true. It would make a fair bit of sense that we would have used a very different formation had we not had the injury issues for most of the season. I don't think Rooneys temperament will be an issue as a lone striker as we should have some very good service if we make the right signings.

Its a simple case of:

"no dynamic midfielders" = this years football which would have frustrated Rooney because of the isolation.

"good attacking midfielders and a holding mid" = plenty of play higher up the pitch and much more involvement / service for Rooney.

To be honest, hazard looks like a fantastic player but for an out and out attacking midfielder Kagawa looks very good too. Both are goals / assist machines and the German league is stronger than the French.

Yeah, Rooney would be involved a lot more up front if we had more creative midfielders - this much is obvious.

Currently we end up with Carrick on the ball and wait with baited breath to see which defender he will pass it back to. :p

1 yellow card in the prem last season says so.

I still couldn't believe that stat when they first posted it on the BBC text updates. Just shows how much he has matured (for want of a better word) in the last few years. He's always had a bit of a reputation for getting frustrated/booked, but clearly that's been addressed, with almost no one noticing!

In the last game of the season I think they were talking about it and then a few minutes later he got his first. To be honest, he could have got 4-5 this season from what I have seen. I was quite amazed when they said he didn't have any yellows.

With the whole Hazard situation, surely him saying he wants regularly playing time would suggest he favours City? Perhaps that is his prefered destination but he is worried about whether or not he'll get a lot of playing time (something that a few people, myself included, have mentioned on here).

Positional discipline != Not fouling.

Rooney is the kind of player who likes to go looking for the ball, a bit like Gerrard. However, I'm sure I have seen games where he's been told to stay up top (weren't there a couple of England games where he did this?), and he did really well.

exactly the opposite surely - he is more likely to be on the bench for City as they have Yaya , Silva, Nasri, at the very least (admittedly floating and not particularly rigid)

Utd ONLY has Cleverley in that position (given Scholes cant and wont play every game, and Anderson being on his way out by all accounts)

Chelsea's a little harder to call (somewhere in the middle at a guess) but Mata and Lamps in the creative mid Hazard prefers

Truth is Hazard would more than likely have no problem getting in either side;

City:

---------------Toure---------------
-------Barry-----------Silva-------
Hazard-------Aguero-------Nasri

United:

Valencia*--Carrick--Scholes--Hazard
-----------------Rooney
-------------------Welbeck

*substitue Valencia for Nani if you want

No player will ever be guaranteed game time or a specific position on the pitch so he'll go where he thinks is best for his career

So you don't think Sir Alex will consider dropping Welbeck from the regular starting eleven and play Rooney as a striker (which is what he is)?

Your City formation looks a bit off as well?

I need to be careful with my words here because I know cmwhatshisface and DM will just be waiting to jump on it..... From what I can gather Fergie is a massive supporter of Welbeck and I can only imagine that from within the club his first season in the first team will be viewed as a very successful one so couple that with the fact that Fergie has always preferred two strikers I'd say no Fergie won't drop Welbeck*

*of course given Welbeck will be at the Euro's I wouldn't be surprised if it was Hernandez that starts the season in the side given he'll have a free summer.

Move Barry back alongside Toure and then have Nasri, Hazard and Silva (they can interchange) behind Aguero.

Indeed, but what about Tevez (if he doesn't leave)? He was being played in behind Aguero; though they interchange a bit.

But neither Kagawa or Hazard are meant to be wide players ideally (though Hazard is better there), so surely our pursuit of Kagawa would suggest he's looking at playing someone such as him behind Rooney?
