Almost Titanic 2

I can almost understand him jumping ship so he could better co-ordinate the safety effort however it seems as though he made his way to the closest port and hailed a taxi! If true it doesn't look good.

/Shrug, from what I read he assumed command of the rescue operation from a helicopter, guess we will have to wait a while for the true to be determined.

I wonder how many "system" on the ship would still be working, surely emergency lights/communications would be waterproof and run on batteries.

From the video on the web though it seems as if there were no lights at all, maybe there "thermal" images.

Can't believe the Captain jumped ship. Fair enough, everyone would be scared in that situation but you need to have responsibility in such an important job..such a selfish coward.

I've seen a few posts like this.
I wonder at which point self preservation kicks in and casts aside all previous training, duty and responsibility?

Personally I don't believe it's something many of us can really judge him on.

Sky news said:
The captain of the stricken cruise ship Costa Concordia has told investigators he "fell into a lifeboat" during the evacuation and could not get out again

Errr ok this is beginning to sound a bit weird.

Wife - "Can I drive?"
Husband - "No. I'm fine"
Wife - "Oh, please let me. I really want to!"
Husband - "No"
Wife - "I tell you what, if you let me drive, just for a bit, when we get home i'll give you a ****job
Husband - "Really?"
Wife - "Promise"
Husband - "Oh go on then"

"And that, your honour, is the final entry from the black box on the costa concordia"

Just sent to me by a mate, maybe a little too soon but I don't think it's necessarily distasteful or disrespectful to anyone on the boat (well, maybe the captain a little :o)

That excuse from the Captain is pathetic in the extreme. Even if the ship tilted and he lost his footing and just happened to fall over the railing into one of the lifeboats, what the heck would stop him getting back out again? Even if it was being lowered they could have thrown him a rope or something to get him back aboard.

If this guy doesnt do jail time then there is truly no justice.

I'm in a bit of dumbfounded about the whole thing to be honest. How come as they were that close to shore the crew weren't on a hightend state of rediness incase the ship has some form of mishap? Surely there must've been watertight doors/hatches on the entry points on all compartments under water level at the very least.

Granted you can't expect a crew of merchant seamen, barstaff and dancers to work like the crew of a Royal Navy warship but surely some form of very basic damage control could've been attempted. Close watertight hatches, get pumps working, issue SOS.

I'm guessing but I would imagine the hole in the ship was just too big, it must have straddled watertight compartments and the amount of water being taken on was just too much for the pumps.

The hole was 160ft long apparently!
