Altered Carbon

I've found it pretty watchable so far - occasionally some of the new actors feel a little forced but mostly manage to pull it off. I've only watched 2 episodes but it feels a lot like a rehash so far of the same themes as season 1 without really doing anything new but early yet.

I watched the first episode and I'm struggling with the guy that has taken over, he just comes across as a bit flat and lacks the personality you'd expect him to have given it's the same guy in a different body.

Honestly, the woman playing Takeshi at the start of the episode did a much better job, so that's possibly magnifying the problem. I'll give it a few more episodes, maybe I'll get used to him or he'll improve.

4 episodes in and very much enjoying it Mackie doesn't have the presence but he is doing OK and the story is solid

Some good twists and turns along the way too.

However, almost 0 boobs and debauchery :(

Watched full season and found season 1 more enjoyable Mackie is a bit wooden

1 quick flash of boobs in a later episode for few seconds

Can you explain why, without spoilers...it's cos of Mackie isn't it, go on, tell me it's Mackie :D

I assume you're on about S2 btw.

I'm talking about Season 2, all just feels a bit Sci-Fi channel in terms of acting and story. It's not holding my interest and end of episode 2 felt silly with the 'Oh I remember' moment.

It does seem that they've put his sleeve from Broken Angels into Woken Furies and mashed some other stuff together. If they've strayed away from the source material, that would explain why it's not working as well as it should. Either that or they know they are not getting a third series.

Ep 7 done , one more to go, but bedtime!

Joel Kinnaman isn't the best actor, but he had presence, determination and acted like a steely eyed killer /assassin - Mackie doesn't have any of that.

As before, I'm still enjoying the series, but the gritiness of the 1st has gone.

And..............season finished.

S1 with Kinnaman and Purefoy and that fantastic world was excellent. S2? Not so much.

A definite drop in quality for S2, but still worth a watch.

Wonder who they will get for S3?!

It really does appear that they put the main elements from the books into a blender and made Kovacs story soup. I find myself watching S2 just to see how far from the books they’ll push it.

If you haven’t read the books and don’t want to know what they’ve changed, don’t read the Spoilerific text below:

I mean they made Ray into his sister and he’s in love with Quellcrist who formed the Envoy Corps for ****’s sake. What’s next, Kovacs having a threesome with an Elder and a swamp panther?
[\SPOILER]

Typical Hollywood. Refuse to follow the source material because they know better, screw up the story and characters by not following the source material. Why option the books if you're not going to follow them anyway?

I'm four episodes in and quite enjoying it, not as good as the first season which I rewatched last week, it feels a bit more by-the-numbers than the first season and as others have said, Kovacs' personality doesn't seem particularly consistent from one sleeve to the next.

Poe is character of the season for me so far, he's been great.

That's a shame. Whilst I thought the first season was good I felt they could have taken the acting and storyline up a notch to make it superb. I had hoped they'd done this for the second season.

Mackie's not really good enough for that. When you read the books you realise that Kovacs (and all the Envoys) are more than just soldiers. They are warriors, strategists, manipulators, psychologists, spies, generally superhumans of the mind, which is far more important than the bioengineered strengths of their sleeves. Sure, they send loads of them across space to download into bodies and into war and combat, but they can also send a small team of half-a-dozen to take down a planetary government covertly. Kovacs is lost in time and space from his friends, and lost his comrades to combat to the point where he no longer believes in the Envoys or what his part it it was. In some ways he's terribly broken. It's a rare actor that can get that across in a performance.

Question about Falconer and her methods:
Why does she need some crazy space magic to destroy the stacks of her victims? We already know a regular old gun can destroy a stack and permanently kill someone.

Because back ups are stored in numerous places, on world, off world, digital back up etc - 'crazy space magic' wipes all the back ups too. The whole premise of S2 is 'real dead'!!
