Am I wrong to want an Impreza?

I insure my STI PPP for under £1500 a year and ive only just turned 22 so it was insured when i was 21

:)

And LOL @ the brutal power delivery of the impreza, errr thats what its all about .... Damm tho wish i bought a skoda ;)

Why shouldn't you have one if you are middle-aged?

Because then you'll look like you're having a mid-life crisis.

There is a reason why Japan gets the STI wagon, it's to cater to the mid-life crisis demographic.

Evo's and their servicing costs etc doesn't make for an ideal every day family car.

Lum however has hit the nail on the head, you have no idea how much I'd love a Legacy B4. Stunning cars, same engine and gearbox etc as the Impreza = a lot of power easily too!

Careful with that, the pre-2003 Legacy B4, the older BE/BH chassis with the twin-turbo setup is notoriously difficult to make big power from, unless you just bin the twin-turbo setup and go single turbo. he most I've heard of anyone making without spending stupid money or going single turbo is about 350 bhp.

The newer BP/BL chassis does use the exact same engine and turbo setup as the Impreza and thus is easy to tune.

In both cases you get better suspension than all but the current Impreza, the one that looks like a Mazda3. The current Impreza got the same suspension setup that the Legacy has had since about 1998 or so, though I don't think it has Billsteins

The type of person buying an Impreza wont be saying "oh no the power delivery is too brutal"

I owned a MY99 Turbo for just over a year, easily the best car ive owned. Sure its not an STi but its still awesome to drive.

I loved it for the sound alone, had a Green Air Filter and Cat back Blitz NURSpec R exhaust... just pure grins everytime I drove it, never got bored of it, although if you have neighbours you may get complaints for the noise :D

I will own another one day, definitely an STi this time.

Personally not a fan of the boxer engine or exhaust note that comes from Imprezas. My brothers Turbo 2000 was mad fast, but I just didn't enjoy how it drove. Maybe I drove it with a bit too much discipline when I should have just thrashed the nuts off it, but I just didn't like it. I'm more of a fan of n/a engines anyway, the induction noise of an M3 is so throaty, love it. That said, I don't like Vtec...oh i'm a fussy b*gg*r!

Would i kill myself going from a 1.6 Focus (first car) to an Impreza STI? :p.

I'm in a similar position as the OP, want to get a fun car for a while and was looking at the CTR. I'd never even given a second thought to the Impreza and just always thought it was way out of my price range but after reading this thread, maybe not.

Probably not, at least not straight away. The Impreza has oodles more grip available than a Focus and thus you can chuck it into corners much faster than you ever could in the Focus.

The problem is that overtime this behaviour tricks people into thinking they're some sort of driving god, then one day they'll chuck it into a corner in the wet, overcook it or aquaplane and end up going sideways, bouncing off a curb through a hedge and wrapping themselves around a tree.

Purchase price isn't the big issue, insurance and servicing are what will cost you. The reason they are so cheap is that by now there are plenty of old ones about that have been thrashed to death by chavs who paid for neither insurance nor servicing.

Yeah thats what I'd be worried about and i bet they wouldn't be cheap to fix if anything major did go wrong due to it being neglected etc.

£1500 insurance and £300 service doesn't sound too bad at all for a car like that though. A lot more than I'm paying for my Focus like but it's a lot more car as well.

I think I'll stick with the CTR idea for now, they seem to be pretty bullet proof and can be had for similar money.

Mental person!

I have a Clio172 now, takes about 9yrs to get through the gears.

I miss doing 60 in second :(

You can't compare a 172 to a Turbo 2000 though, I compared it to an M3!

Never driven the Clio's but 8,000rpm from a big straight six in the Porsche (or from my old M3) is much nicer than a ghastly turbo dump valve! I'm just getting boring as I start to look at nicer cars I think, I used to love the dump and induction on my Octavia but as I've moved through the ranks, I just prefer real engine noise now, not just a stupid exhaust noise that gets very dreary after 10 minutes of driving!

They are nice cars and I would say probably better put together than a classic Impreza but for the cost of a decent Cupra R you'd get a weapon of a scoob.

The cupra would probably be easier to sell on. I'm giving mine away and no one is interested and mines actually very rare. It doesn't help that people can't see past the "Its not an STI it must be poo, its 4 doors it must be poo" mentallity.

I'm in a mind to keep it. I'm hopefully swapping my Speedline 18s for Volk CE28 17s at the weekend. Hope hope anyway.

Im 27 and my insurance was £500 fc on a 03 UK spec WRX blobeye (directline) ... just waiting for Jolly green monster to arrive atm to see about another re-map for my extra mods ... air filter and downpipe, that i have waiting to fit ... im at 270bhp at the mo hoping to get it up to at least 290bhp :D:D:D

Power delivery is brutal .. and its ace but you dont have to hit this everywhere ... you can easily drive about without hitting the boost (thats if you want too :D)
