Am I wrong to want an Impreza?

Becuase it's a midlife crisis car for middleaged men. Very uncool, whereas in your 20's it's quite a cool car to drive.

You always see some fat balding man driving one and think, jesus man, get a grip.

Your age is showing. So what is a correct midlife car to have? Or should one bow down and settle for something boring because it is no longer time to enjoy life if you reach that age?

Can't say I'm familiar with your spec Locky? Didn't even know you owned a scooby to be fair. What you done to it?

Its not a massive spec, newage X reg estate, with a very nice after-market kit.

But a nice example, been to TSL motorsport most of its life for servicing and mods, I bought it from the original owner,
TSL straight through exhaust, TSL remap, better fuel pump and injectors, the suspension has been changed and so have the breaks,
the last time it was mapped and RR it made 290bhp.

And it's on the standard turbo? To be fair mate, I think once rolling, the Vectra VXR would be pretty equal, if not faster..

yeah, but I was thinking changing the turbo to a VF34 If im right.

I will add some pics soon, not had the car that long.

VF34 is a very good upgrade, make sure you upgrade the injectors to STi jobbies whilst you're at it, and go for an STi intercooler to make sure all is nice and cool too!

my old scoob would eat c4s's

but it wasnt a standard car,

I agree with you completely about standard tune scoobs v porkas

oooh i got a bit of an answer for this one as i have a WRX 270bhp and my dad has a C4 03, he goes the same way to work to me and.......... both of us left the traffic lights going on to the EP at the same time ... i managed to pull ahead then at about 100mph he just drifted past  but he said he was really trying 0-100 and was giving it a right thrash  thats the thing about porkas they just dont slow down at any rev range !

Any mods or servicing I will take it to TSL, just to keep the good history up

To be honest for what I paid for the car and performance it has you can't go wrong, only let down is the crappy jap interior.

a lot of car for the money and I have always wanted a scooby.

Actually the archetypal mid-life crisis cars that aren't stupidly expensive are Boxters and TTs. I know a lot of scoob drivers and I'd be surprised if the average owner's age was over thirty. That said, a scoob is never cool. Fast yes; to be admired, maybe - but never cool.

All this says the fat, balding middle-aged bloke who drives a fairly quick one...

Here it is. 380/1000 Impreza WRX Type RA WRC Limited Edition.

I love the blue RA seats. I'm only the 2nd owner from brand spankers. Its between 300-320 on a VF29 and has the lowest ratio box you can get on a classic so its acceleration is quite impressive. The wireless is made by Nakamichi which is quite posh. I'd owned the car for a month before my daughter found the remote in one of the glove boxes :)

Thats a real nice one :)

....sideskirts and rear spats!?!?!? would be much better with those, bit odd they dont come as standard on that version

As for the midlife crisis talk, why care what other people think of you? If im buying a car, its for me, not because "oh noes i might look un cool"

What do you mean it can't be good for the car? Sorry you're chatting a bit of tosh mate.

The new ones feel a little less harsh due to the extra weight. However, mine kicks your neck back nicely at anything above 2krpm..

I'd much much rather have the brutal power delivery. My dad is 51 years old, has a WRX modded to a good 320-300bhp, and he can't get enough of the power delivery. He loves the mid range "punch" that it gives him, along with the awesome exhaust soundtrack.

That part was a question! Does having such a sudden surge of power from the turbo not put strain on certain components?

As for the delivery, it's personal opinion I suppose, I just hate hate hate lag, I need to get the VX remapped asap, it's a dog before 3000rpm.

Not going to put strain on anything in the way it's delivered. Just the amount of torque on modified scoobs can easily eat through gearboxes, but standard cars, so long as the clutch is already engaged, then no you're not going to put strain on anything.

You probably get the illusion that your car is a dog before 3krpm because if feels so slow in comparison to after the turbo comes on full boost. But actually, you probably have loads of torque around that mark!

One thing I don't do is rag it in first gear, to preserve the gear box. I find my scoob nice to drive off boost and pulls very well to be honest.

Working with the things every day I can safely say I'd never buy a WRX over an STI.
The WRX is such a wet stodgy lettuce compared to the STi.
JDM (import) models give you all the toys and some and it makes every sense to get one.
Make sure it's a 2.0L as well and not a 2.5L if you think you might get the "tuning bug" (and trust me you WILL get the tuning bug)
Also don't pay through the nose for a PPP equipped one (either WRX or STi) spend similar money on after market parts and a bespoke remap and get much more bang for your buck.

The above is based on you looking at post 01 model (new age) cars..
