AM4 B350/X370 black screen crash thread

As having suggested, remove evga precision. Or at least make sure it's not running.

I know nothing afterburner and palit thunder master cause black screens when running occt. Sometimes with memtest too.

It's annoying.

And again, as gavinh87 said, some pauses are normal. Got to remember, the program was meant to push a system very hard. Harder than any general work load.

If you get lots of really long pauses, those for me were caused by certain apps - driver max and bitdefender.

Gavin, I hope so. Will do some more testing tonight.
Eyetrip, like you and Gavin say I was expecting some short freezes of a few seconds but these were a fair bit longer, generally 20 secs or so but some over a minute so I was wondering if these were the freezes/mouse hangs I have read about. Oh and I am running the Asrock ab350m pro 4, would've gotten something more high end like the old Asus gene matx boards but nothing like that seems to exist... At least this one has a full compliment of heat sinks!

It's intersting that you have a different chipset from a different manufacturer with a different chip, and experience the same issues.

You have far less ram than me, but also a 10 series nvidia...

I wonder if sdome of these chips have some kind of minor fault?

I am tempted to try another chip.

Well after memtesting both at stock and 2933Mhz with 60 Ohm proodt it still crashed after a few minits of stress testing in windows,
Event viewer says "41 - Kernal power" which after looking around google has been linked to AMD GPU drivers
Will try my old Nvidia 460 if i can find it to rule that out next.

Managed to complete a 3 hour run of OCCT last night at 3.7g 1.3v (Actually reporting 1.33 - 1.34) Mem at 3066, tried 3.8g at the same voltage but it black screened after a few mins. That felt like a hard crash as my power meter dropped from ~240w to 100w.
I expect that I could get 3.8g if I pushed the voltage high enough but am not sure it is worth it, especially on the stock cooler as I am getting temps bordering on 70 degrees at the moment. Am more inclined to make sure it is stable at this point.

You could be onto something eyetrip, it does feel as though I have a bad specimen of a chip at the very least. Is a shame as I wanted to get the same single threaded performance as my 2500k at 4.5g however I need to get up to 3.9g for that.

Thanks for your assistance chaps, I am getting hopeful that I have achieved system stability somewhat although it appears my overclock is going to be limited..

3.8 is my max on my 1700. I have one that can do 3.9 but the memory controller on that is poor.
It appears we have both lost the lottery. Bear in mind you can use upto 1.45v with these however you will certainly need better cooling.

For the sake of 100/200mhz I personally wouldn't bother. In my own tests the speed increases from 3.7-4.0 are minimal outside of synthetics.

Yeah agreed, the silicon lottery has not done us any favours this time.
When I got this build my intention was to put a custom loop in as it has been about 15 years since I last did custom water. But seeing as I'll be lucky to get another 100mhz am tempted just to leave it as is and get a Hyper 212X or a NH-D15s just to bring the noise and temps down.

If you want it to be tidy then you can also consider AIO although it will be slightly louder.

I have looked at AIOs, just in case I need to work around the socket or get to the ram as big air coolers make that more annoying than I would like. Although I am not inclined to spend the money NZXT and Cosair want for theirs, getting rather close to EK kit territory...

You can get a 240mm Cooler Master Seidon 240 for under £50 new if you want to have a look at it.

It's a great cooler...keeps my X5650 nice ans cool...but it doesn't come with an AM4 bracket. You can get one from Cooler Master for the postage cost, around £7.

Better off getting the other Cooler Master listed above, that's AM4 compatible.

Funnily enough the Master Liquid 240 and the Seidon 240 were the AIO's I have been looking at, although am not sure if I want to go in that direction or for air.

Even though I had a less than stellar experience with the Triton, I won't be going back to air. The AIO's are so much neater, no ram clearance issues, and so far, the Seidon has performed exemplary.

Some of the motherboards come with the AM3 holes though so it would fit the Asus Crosshair, not sure if it is exclusive to that motherboard or not.

Decided to pick up the CM Hyper 212 Evo on offer at £23 today, figured because my chip is a pretty bad clocker an AIO or twin tower cooler would be overkill.
The temps I get on the stock cooler are reasonable (mid to high 60's in OCCT depending on how hot it is outside), so just wanted to get the noise down a little.

Anyone had any luck with this?

Ryzen 1700
Asus prime X370 Latest BIOS
16GB Corsair Vengeance LPX 3200Mhz (SK Hynix)
R9 290
EVGA 750 G3

I get Black screens under load at "optimized defaults" i can get it stable at stock with 1.4V for the RAM and 1.1V on the soc but any movement in RAM speed or CPU overclock and it starts freezing again

I have tried each stick of RAM on its own and in different slots, reseated CPU and heatsink, Fresh windows 10 all to no avail.

Thanks

Hey Man,

I have the same CPU/MB (0805)/RAM +

1080 Ti Strix,
Corsair rm750x.

I have it working stable now (at least I hope 2 OCCT 30+ min tests and gaming for 2 hours of Dishonored confirm it). According to my experience:

1) RAM overclock seem to directly influences whether I blackscreen during OCCT or not. So first I got my RAM to stock and overclocked my CPU. This is what I got to:

Standard EZ preset (not Optimized or the Energy saving or whatever there is),
Clock Ratio x38.5,
VCORE offset +0.1625 V,
CPU LLC - level 3,
SOC LCC - level 3,
CPU Phase Control - extreme.

Now I'm not sure whether these 3 last lines actually help, since I haven't done any extensive testing.

2) Then I went trying to set my RAM straight. I did 1 pass of memtest with DOCP Profile, 3200 MHz clocked RAM. All fine. But doing OCCT it would crash (irrelevant of CPU clock).

So the highest I got to without blackscreening was DOCP 2800 MHz. Unfortunately. Trying to increase some timings and voltage... didn't really work.

PS Prime test would work for long without issues, but OCCT would crash.

Hope this helps. Cheers.
