Amazon Fire TV

out of curiosity mate, why would one want to use DSVideo with AFT? I'm streaming using just straight samba (or maybe window FS s I dunno lol) from my synology to XBMC.

I have the DSvideo app on my iPhone, iPad and Samsung smart TV and it's so easy to connect directly to my Synology NAS, I have plex running on my NAS drive too, but keep getting an error saying plex is currently offline, haven't tried xbmc yet so might give that a go. :)

I can understand dsvideo for the ipad and iphone as they need the transcoding but for the samsung telly just the basic dlna software will work fine.
Use xbmc to connect and login directly to the NAS folders and i promise you wont go back lol ;)

Thanks, I thought I tried that and it made no difference. I will try again. Do you know if I should expect a menu or is it a toggle/cycle type no feedback operation?

If nothing happens when you select that icon - the subs must be hard coded into your source file. I tried it last night and got options to disable and download subs.

Do you have a link I can use as a guide? I have just put xbmc onto my AFT :)

Soz bud I havn't - its pretty easy to setup if I recall correctly - wasn't rocket science - I put in my synology nas server IP, a username and password and boom, it showed all my folders for me to select from. Make sure to save the source and then thats it - no need to touch again. :)

Not sure if this has been asked/answered before but is this a potential replacement for a HTPC? I only use my HTPC with XBMC and sometimes it seems a little overkill, I don't record just watch stuff from my NAS.

Like you I have stopped using my HTPC altogether now, but only use a NowTV box at the moment (which is very limited) so am looking at one of these.

It will definitely be able to replace the HTPC (on most counts). You can either run XBMC on it, or PLEX if your NAS supports PLEX Server. The limelight app sounds interesting if you do in-home streaming at all.

What I don't know for sure is what audio standards it is using, because at the moment I'd just be linking it to a stereo output. So might be worth looking into depending on your setup.

With XBMC side loaded does anyone know how I can turn off/on the subtitles when playing back video?

Play a video, click the centre button on the remote. Scroll along to the sound/video options button at the top of the screen, go down to enabled subs and deselect the radio button. Scroll down to the bottom and click use these settings for all videos.

I'll be connecting it to my Onkyo amp via HDMI and according to the Amazon Fire TV blurb this is what audio it supports:

Support for Dolby Digital Plus, 5.1 surround sound, 2ch Stereo and HDMI audio pass through up to 7.1

Might have to get one and try it out, if it works for me I can get rid of the big box under the telly.

From a bit of quick reading it seems Plex has a problem playing DTS/DD but I'll be using XBMC with it so hopefully it'll be ok.

Does anyone know how I can make Netflix think my Fire TV is connecting from as US IP address and if it's easy to swap back an forth depending on what content I'd like to watch?

Normally I just use a chrome plugin and chromecast it to my TV, but I'd like to stream the 4k version of the Blacklist via ethernet from the router and the show is only available on the US Netflix at the moment.

Which version of Kodi you using mate? - I'm on Gotham 13.2.
Any problems with it as its still RC1 I believe - not final yet.

I am looking for a xbmc media player but want one that will auto switch to 24hz for judder free playback. I think I have read that android based media players are not capable of this but just thought I would ask in here on the off chance.

Cheers

You need to alter the DNS settings but I think you'll have to keep changing them every time you wish to watch something that isn't available on the other.
