Amazon Fire TV

Does anyone have a screenshot or video to show XBMC once it's added to the homescreen (with FTV?)

I know by default you have to faff in the menus via manage applications to launch it, but I think there's a way to add it to the launcher screen?

Install ikoni TV app (this is going to be used as the icon for xbmc)
use the FTV v0.32 utility and select the option to install llama.

Configure llama to point the ikoni TV app to XBMC - jobs a good 'un.

This way it adds a simple way of getting into XBMC and still keep all the standard amazon setup - worked a treat for me.

Loving XBMC - Plex is just too clunky in comparison and nowhere near as customisable. Thankfully I've removed Plex from my NAS now (it takes up a lot of resources and bogs it down).

Don't think so bud - the stock remote is bluetooth I believe, not IR.

After Googling there are Air Mouses(!) that work but I'm against the Fire TV now.
I've watched loads of You Tube videos and I'm not that impressed so I'm going back to my original idea of a Mini Neo X7 which is basically a Fire TV without all the Amazon crap and you can mess with it like an Android phone/tablet.

I've got a neo x7, they require a lot of fiddling out of the box. they also dont support rgb limited output, so you get black crush on your tv unless your tv happens to support full range RGB (like a monitor). Hense why i asked if the fireTV suffers the same problem (as basically every other android media player out there does) but nobody has answered yet.

also, if you want an airmouse, do NOT buy the minix A2. its crap.

Why?
Looks like an Android phone to me!

Stupid question time - would this affect the HDMI output/input?

Bummer, what do you suggest then?
The Mele 10 doesn't have a dedicated stop/pause button apparently.

exactly :p

older firmware releases weren't up to much. Problems with crashing, audio passthru wasnt working properly (sketchy Dolby Digital/DTS output), no 1080p output when watching video. Minix have been...slow, with their support - most users resorted to custom firmware. Most of that is now fixed but its pot luck what firmware the units are shipping with. At the very least you would probably need to flash it with the latest official firmware, depending on what version the unit ships with, that might be easy (copy firmware to unit and reboot) or a pain in the arse (connect to PC, fiddle with the unit trying to get it it boot in flash mode etc). Then obviously you need to set up the rest of your chosen software on there (I use plex for the home theatre stuff) but if you know anything about android at all then its not an issue.

It certainly does, and hdmi is the only output it has. My son still uses ours for his films/cartoons but I dont use it for any serious watching now as im fed up with the ruined picture. I'm using the pc instead.

I dont think you need one tbh. the small remote that the x7 ships with doesnt have one, either. As it's android, everything is done with a simulated keypress anyway. for example, pressing OK when watching a movie with plex will pause it. ok again will resume play.

I love the concept of the airmotes and they work well IMO but the minix A2 is horrific on batteries. lots of people complained on the minix forums and they fobbed us off, basically. Not sure what the batterlife of the F10 is like. Ive tried a few different control methods but not really found anything im 100% happy with. I've got a logitech wireless touchpad atm and that works quite well for mouse input, but obviously that's just as touchpad so no keyboard unless i plug one in. i think a wireless keyboard/pad combo would be best.

Don't get me wrong - I think the x7 is very good - but the black crush is a major issue for me when video playback was supposed to be the primary use for my x7. This is why im waiting for an android device that supports proper rgb limited but ive not seen one yet, and that includes any of the X8 series.

For those of you thinking about other boxes, a friend of mine just launched his own that he's been working on.

It's the same chap that wrote Raspberry Pi Media Center, now he's got some hardware to go with it. Looks interesting :)

Yeah, tis a little pricey compared to the competition, I'm guessing he hasn't got the economies of scale to bring the price down yet.

Looking forward to having a play with one when they ship.

Just been looking through the specs, codec support etc and it does seem like it could be decent at least on paper. No missed major codecs that i could see other than AC3 but it lists all the DTS variations as compatible so i imagine AC3 will work.

If i needed another box i might have tried it but i think we have at least one of every other box already lol.

So i've been using XBMC Gotham 13.2 since I got the device. Seems to work quite well except on the odd movie or so (streaming from NAS) it stops playing all of a sudden (not sure if its a crash as just the movie stops and can usually be replayed).

Anyone using any other version of XBMC - I wouldn't mind trying the latest but don't know where to get it from (too many different versions!)
