The fire tv is very very good for streaming,I went from a western digital media player to the fire tv and I'm.glad I did, picture quality is better, speed is a lot better ,in fact....everything is so much better, amazing little box for the money.
This is where my interest would be peaked.
Is this a good choice if my main purpose is to stream video files from my PC to my TV via my home network (wifi)
Or am I better off with a Roku 3 for that?
I am thinking of replacing sky tv with now tv plus Netflix. Am I right that fire tv box doesn't have a now tv app?
..... can try side loading the Android NowTV app and let you know how they get on. I don't have a NowTV account so not sure how far I'd get...
Cheers mate. Anyone done this?
Neither device as the built in functionality to do this. However both support Plex (my personal preference) and the AFTV will also run Kodi which will let you do want you want.
It just want freemium recently, its basically just a demo of the app until you buy it in-app I believe. I got it just before it changed for about £3 or something, no idea if costs any more now.
At most £40, at least £35 is my guess.
I've done it.
Works fine with a usb mouse but no good with the controller. Couple of other issues:
- The streams are only handheld quality and not HD. Passable though.
- After exiting the application, you must Force Stop it in the FTV menu, otherwise when you next go to stream something it will say the device is unsupported.
Really needs an official app though. Can't get SkyGo to work at all.
Got this the other day. Got it all sorted up and working fine. Rebooted the PC today and now PLEX won't stay logged in on the Fire TV. Can't say I am all that impressed with PLEX if this is going to happen a lot ...
Aside from Netflix / Amazon Instant are there any apps that offer HD streaming?
BBC iPlayer, STV Player and 5 onDemand are all HD.
YouTube is also HD, so if you can buy things through that?
EDIT: Oh, if you get the app "AirPlay/DLNA Receiver (PRO)" that handles full HD video from your mac, iPhone or Android phone. So if you found something the device didn't directly stream you can still "cast" it to your device.
I think it's more likely that your Plex client updated on your AFTV.
The updates don't seem to apply until the device restarts so it could be that combination of things rather than just your PC restarting - which is unlikely to effect it.
Also, the reason I'm pulling at straws is because it's something I've never experienced as I've never signed into Plex on the AFTV. Since it autodetects the server on the network anyway there's no need unless you make use of the queuing stuff and shared libraries - which I don't.
