Amazon Fire TV

I've only just managed to get my girlfriend used to working Kodi, I think a change to plex may not go in my favour! Haha.

Other than that I hve no other reason to stay with Kodi.

The Client/Server setup is appealing but for me no Live TV (PVR) is a dealbreaker.

Ah, live TV. I only have Virgin cable so not sure if that even would be an option with Kodi?

Get a new girlfriend. That's when I made the move :D

Joking aside Plex's "on deck" feature that displays the next episode of any TV show you've been watching means we never leave the first screen.

I'm sure Kodi has something like this by now but it's a feature that means when we turn on our TV the next thing we want to watch is right in front of you - literally one click after turning on the TV and it's started.

Yeah I remember in the past struggling for ages getting Mediaportal to work with a TV card and eventually giving up. Using XBMC and a TV PVR add-on never worked for me either, and that was with a traditional HTPC box. Not sure how it would work with a AFTV as a live TV PVR.

Yeah, Kodi has recently added which pops up on the main screen. But if you're wading through a series you have to go through the series list, which in all honesty isn't that much of a hardship.

That seems crazy they've not copied "on deck" yet.

Not much of a hardship no, but Plex is such a slicker experience in every aspect - apart from LiveTV, I'll give you that :)

I've often thought of trying Plex but must confess to be completely confused about what you have to pay for and what's free, and can I live without the monthly annual subs too? Perhaps we need someone with the knowledge to start an **** Official Plex **** thread.

I find LiveTV on the AFTV to be poor, it's an issue with the Android version rather than AFTV specifically. This was with a backend server running the PVR backend.

I just have a really a simple setup of streaming files from my desktop to my AFTV wirelessly. For that I run the Plex server on my desktop (free) and the Plex app installed on the AFTV which cost me about £3. Thats all thats needed.

I have a windows based HTPC in the living room which is running running LiveTV via Mediaportal backend and I find it works absolutely fine via network access on my FireTV in the bedroom, I have everything running via cat6 network, although I think the FireTV may be limited to 10/100.

Which backend are you running?

Argus but I don't think its backend specific. The Mediacodec acceleration didn't work on HD streams for me it was very jerky even via LAN. The alternative codec doesn't support interlacing so didn't look right for SD streams.

Plex is an offshoot of Kodi (back when Kodi was called XBMC). This is usually the reason people compare the two as they come from the same code base.

Plex's main aim in the beginning was to solve a basic problem that a lot of people had with XBMC - the lack of a central repository for your videos (and associated meta data e.g. boxart images) and a synchronised database of what you had watched.

While XBMC did support this with a couple of workarounds (setting up your own MySQL database) Plex aimed to make this as simple as possible for people.

To do this, Plex uses a "server/client" architecture.

These two parts are called "Plex Media Server" and "Plex Home Theater" and can run on your PC at home.

All of this is free.

The advantage of Plex over Kodi is that because the "client" is so light weight (as the server does all the heavy lifting) Plex can be natively installed on a large number of devices - e.g. Smart TV's, android devices and even iOS devices.

Unfortunately, like many companies adopting the "app" model, you sometimes have to pay for these. The Android version (for your phone or Amazon Fire TV) costs about £3. The iOS version is the same.

Additionally, Plex also has a paid for subscription model (Plex Pass) that allows you to try out new features before their rolled out to the free users. You can pay monthly, yearly or pay a one off "lifetime" fee.

A good example of this currently you can ONLY use Plex on a games console if you are a Plex Pass subscriber.

Created at the end of 2014 is likely by the end of 2015 these apps too will be available to free users.

The additional features you get with Plex Pass is always changing as new features are developed and older ones become free.

To see everything you gain by subscribing you can read this page: https://plex.tv/subscription/about

The best thing about Plex (and Kodi!) is that the underlying functionality that you're likely to use on a day to day basis is free.

You can quickly go and download Plex Media Server and Plex Home Theater (even on the same PC) and see if it suits your needs - so don't be afraid to try both!

Thanks Vimes, I'll install SPMC

Best of luck - as noted you can install SPMC and leave Kodi installed for a while whilst you test out SPMC, if you wish.

I side loaded the 14.1 SPMC and then set it up - I use the CCM for Helix skin - some great options over that of the std Confluence but not too heavy for the AFTV to be still responsive.

Then I went to the Amazon Market with my main PC web browser and then "bought" for free the SPMC app....

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Semperpax-S...=UTF8&qid=1425060818&sr=8-1&keywords=spmc+app

I then synchronised this on the AFTV and then rebooted the AFTV. Then the SPMC, with its own Icon shows up on the main Home page of the AFTV.

Doing the above I removed Kodi, LLama and the dummy app which was used to create an Icon / Shortcut for Kodi as they are no longer needed.

With Plex if I want to stream my media from the server to two devices at the same time would I need plex plus or can I do that as a standard free user?

Also I have my Kodi icon done properly now, thanks for that Dimple.

Even though I mentioned side loaded you can copy the file across to the download folder of the AFTV by using that app you noted. Then you can install this....

http://www.amazon.co.uk/ES-Mobile-F...70753&sr=8-2-fkmr0&keywords=file+mamanger+app

from the AFTV you can then use the file manager to navigate to the downloads folder and install the apk from there.

As long as you have got the AFTV to install from unknown sources etc it will work fine.

However if you prefer the app way for ease etc then Amazon FireTV Utility App is perfectly able to do all of that....

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2736774

......I have used it to install apps etc and it works a treat.

IIRC....

https://github.com/koying/SPMC/releases/download/14.1.0-spmc/spmc-armeabi-v7a_14.1.0.apk

.....is the version I used.

Hopefully you are side loading the apk and not just copying it across. :)

The AFT Utility App seems to have sideloaded it and I've also pushed it to the download directory.
I've also sideloaded ES fFile Explorer because Amazon says it isn't compatible with my Fire TV.
I'll check upstairs in a minute.

Yes it did sideload but I've just spent 30 minutes with it and I can't see any difference between Kodi & SPMC.
