Amazon Fire TV

That was easy even for a near pensioner.
Kodi setup with an icon top left on the homescreen.

This is a nice box and it's going where my WDTV live is.

What icon have you used? I ended up using llama to replace an icon of a different app, which also launches - however when you exit Kodi it relaunches itself through llama (because the other app is still running in the background) so the unit wont shut down after inactivity.

Other than that, I'm really happy with it, Kodi runs great, menus and playback are nice and smooth.

I understand what you mean and I too have used LLama to display the Kodi icon on my home screen of the AFTV (using the iKonoTV app) and maybe I should use a different launcher as it s does sometimes relaunch Kodi (well SPMC in my case).

But why doesn't your AFTV shutdown (well sleep mode) as mine seems to do that fine - but I'm using SPMC. When using Kodi you can also go into settings / power saving and set a shut down timer for when it is idle.

BTTW you do know that if you use SPMC only you do not need to use llama or change any icon etc....?

I've set the Kodi idle shutdown timer to 10mins, it closes and relaunches. :(

Here's the You Tube link because I have no problems -

The guy is pretty quick and misses a couple of things out.
On Llama when he says scroll down to the + you then have to scroll left to the Llama icon.

He then says scroll down to import/export from USB display and leaves it at that.
Go through the process of importing (this is info that ADBFire sent over to it I think).

I had to do this twice and reboot the machine but after the second time (or something I did wrong) it worked.

IMO you do not need to use Kodi at all.

You should use SPMC. This can be sideloaded as an apk (just like Kodi) and has optimisations which seem to improve it over that of Kodi for Android devices.

Also as it is available (dummy type app) in the Amazon store you can get it to officially show on the Recent app list on the home screen of the AFTV without any real jiggery pokey with llama.

You do not need llama.

It, to me, is a more elegant solution. You do not get any restart issues as you are not using llama and it shuts down and sleeps etc perfectly fine.

Kodi and SPMC can be installed at the same time as they will use a different data base by default - but you do not need Kodi.

My Kodi runs from my SQL database on my media server so they're all linked. Will I be able to do that with SPMC?

e: Just watched the video, the information I had on Llama was slightly different, I'll give that a go tonight! Thanks.

You can install SPMC and have it running on the same AFTV as Kodi. As noted they use a separate database and so it will not mess up your Kodi install. That way you can decide if it meets your needs whilst you test it out.

With SPMC installed, side loaded, and then selected from the Amazon store and synchronised with your apps you no longer need llama or to change icons etc as the AFTV will show SPMC in the recent app list.

It just seems more elegant than the Kodi solution.

Koying - A Team Kodi developer is the person responsible for the SPMC spinoff....

There is more information available over at XDA and, of course, over at the Kodi forums.

To use the MySQL solution all Kodi instances connected to the server need to be running the same build, so I don't think SPMC will work with my set up. I think I'll stick with the Llama work around for now. The method in the video Dimple linked is a lot more stream lined than the way I've done it.

I have never needed to use what you describe, having needed Kodi / SPMC on a single TV etc.

SPMC is completely based on Kodi 14.1 with only a few fixes etc added for Android devices.

Your choice of course but as noted it can be tested out without needing to remove or replace etc Kodi.

You could ask your questions here if needed...

NeverWinter, genuine question - as someone that was a complete XBMC fanboy, synced MySQL database setup and all, the move to Plex was like night and day for me and I've never looked back.

The server / client setup is just such a sensible solution. The ease of managing content and sheer simplicity of it all is a no brainer.

Why are you still sticking with Kodi? What does it give you that Plex doesn't?
