This year has well and truly wiped my enthusiasm for the PC market.
It's fair to say that it's sapping mine also. As I've mentioned before I'm responsible for the system build business here and so, over the last year, I've had to beg, steal, blackmail and demand stock of pretty much everything apart from cases. We've had rolling shortages all year thanks to Covid and it's a challenge to keep everything moving. It's my responsibility to find a way to keep the build department stocked or we have about 30 guys and gals whose jobs could be at stake.
With this in mind I can sympathise with Gibbo's position on CPU & GPU. There's almost no stock of 10900K and much of his other Intel stock he's having to buy from unofficial sources. Every single Ryzen 3000 series is in shortage & everyone knows the situation with 5000 series.
The same goes for graphics...RTX 2000 series is now totally dead, there's a big black hole where they used to be. I 'joked' earlier that if my system customers wanted anything other than a GTX 1660 then they were out of luck, but the same goes for his web customers. There really are no stocks of the older parts available and none of the new either.
When you're a product manager judged on hitting targets and you've got only a tiny fraction of the stock that you would like it's definitely stressful. I keep making jokes about the appearance of a bald patch which can't help either
So, when he gets stock and the manufacturer wants him to hit an unreasonable MSRP and make barely enough to cover costs I can understand why he chooses not to. I know I've done the same in the past.
People keep coming back to his car collection and I'm not going to claim that I'm not jealous too, but I think that it's really unfair to do so. He started doing this job in his teens and has worked hard for his money. Plus, he's tighter than a...I'd better not finish that...he's spent his whole adult life basically trading cars and often making healthy profits on them. He's also come into some money via some sad circumstances and cars are his passion, he rarely spends his money on anything else. If I think of the amount I've spent on gaming, paintball and guitars over the years it's obvious to me why I drive a six year old Golf.
I can only repeat what Gibbo said earlier, none of our purchasing team are paid on commission, we are all paid a flat salary so there's no selfish greed involved in the decisions we may make.
I appreciate why there are so many frustrated customers and I understand that some are alienated, we don't set out to annoy you guys
. I can only hope that supply improves in the coming weeks and that next week's launch goes more smoothly. I hope AMD learnt some valuable lessons for the RX 6900 launch and I hope that you all have a good evening & a good weekend. I think I might spend most of it asleep.
