if you are upgrading from a 3700x and whatever card you are using atm then it will seem like a huge leap in performance. I am more than sure you will be happy with it for many years.

Agree. In most cases, especially where (a side amount of) productivity is concerned (and not just gaming), the parts these days are very capable of lasting well beyond 5 years and likely into 10+ years (certainly with just the occasional GPU refresh). My i7 4930k X79 system certainly would have lasted well beyond 10 years had the motherboard not died from a manufacturing defect that finally revealed itself and took the motherboard and system with it, and the secondary rig of i5 3570-non-k Z77 is retiring only because it is no longer able to keep up due to the AI stuff needing more than a quad core CPU from 12+ years ago to run smoothly. Those are some legs on parts from more than a decade ago, which parts today I am sure will be able to replicate easily.

@Meddling-Monk the last time I used a cpu for longer than a year was the 2600k. I used that for 5/6 years before upgrading. Now I upgrade every year. Only had the 7800x3D less than 2 weeks than upgraded to the 9800X3D. Marginal gains but not as bad as I went from 13900k to 14900k

It just never ends does it. It’s always the next big thing. I’m upgrading from a 3700x though so I think the 9800x3d and 5090 combo should satiate my greed for the next 5 years at least.

Same thing happened to my delivery, was at Birmingham depot just before midnight, then this morning it's ended up in Durham, a casual 233 miles away

Mine looks like it's back on track. It went from Birmingham, to London, to east of Birmingham, and finally south to my local depot. No idea why. A different DPD yesterday went Birmingham to my local in 4 hours. Yesterday was my day off so although it's just 1 day delay I'm not going to get near building today.

They are sent altogether… so if something is still on pre-order, you’ll be waiting (according to CS when I spoke to them about this a week or two ago).

Not too fussed about the delivery as I can't do anything with the CPU until the mobo comes anyway....I guess a follow up would be if the delivery is delayed, does that mean my 9800X3D in this batch has been alloted to me to be sent with the others or will I end up being back on the waiting list for the future stock post Christmas?

I was in the same position as you - albeit, ordered mobo, and waiting on the 9800x3d. After I ordered, the mobo also went to ‘pre-order’, hence my chat with CS…

Anything that is in stock will be held for your order, and as other stuff becomes available, it too will be added and held for your order, until such time as the order can be fulfilled in entirety….

So in your case, the 9800x3d will have been allocated to you, and you’ll just be waiting on the mobo.

A LONG time ago, I was swapping parts in and out every few months as they released, but that was a different time where such upgrades were very noticeable (and I could budget that in ). Unfortunately, as an unpaid carer here, upgrade options are limited until there's no other option (and you have enough saved up). A LONG time ago, I was swapping parts in and out every few months as they released, but that was a different time where such upgrades were very noticeable (and I could budget that in ). These days can make a system last with just a GPU refresh every so often.

Oh for sure. Nobody is missing out on huge performance if they keep a cpu for a few years. When the biggest performance leap you can get is gpu (sadly not you 3070>3070ti users). But even then it costs if you are going the NVIDIA route.

I guess it a matter of how long you leave it and the time/generation you upgrade to.
