AMD - How To Overclock The Official Way Using Afterburner + Step By Step Overclocking Guide + Comple

I followed the guide in the OP and I did unlock higher clocks in AB 2.3.1 from max 1050 core to max 1170 core. So while my MSI 7850 1GB is a bad OC card with an ASIC of 68,8% and a stock voltage of 1,21V (max stable for me 1125 core clock and 1250 memory clock) why is the max core clock in AB still "only" 1170. I saw some people that could theoretically go up to 1700 core clock (not that it really matters since mine can't reach its current max anyway). Just curious. Maybe the extendend clocks are more limited on the newest AB?

Can someone tell me the max temps i should let my HD 7950 get to for the GPU, VRM 1 and VRM2.
Thank you.
So far gone from stock to 1200 on the core and over 1600 on memory. Still potential to eek out more but dependent on temps - still on air, will going under water tho eventually?

Once you start overclocking heavily you will often find that recommendation comes down to 80c-70c.

well looks like im going to settle with 1210/1650 at 1200mV (1135 with vdroop).
that gives me 29.5FPS with Heaven score of 742. Normal Tessalation and 4xAA.
80c on the core, 90c on VRM1 and 65c on VRM2. Will be going under water so that should bring it down.

Once those twin frozrs start spinning up they sound hideous.

Dunno about the coil whine, but yeah, should be fine when you drown it :)

Btw, I just had a look at some of my old Sapphire 7950 OC'd temps and yours pretty much tally with those when taking the increased voltage into account.

Good luck with the WC :)

Nice clocks. Bit hot though... What fan % is that at? What case too?

Oh thats a little reassuring for sure. Still undecided if this is the card for me. Not sure if those results for that resolution are good, excellent or poor. Not got 30fps on any of the benchmark runs upto the final one. I prefer not to xfire, im in the one good gpu school rather than multi.
Anyone have any opinion on those results?

Anybody know why voltage isn't unlocking for my 7870 LE? Works fine in Sapphire Trixx :p

This version of afterburner should support voltage control with your card.

http://www.guru3d.com/files_details/msi_afterburner_beta_download.html

Change list:

• Added core voltage control for reference design AMD RADEON 7870 XT graphics cards with CHL8225 voltage regulators
• Added core voltage control for cost down reference design AMD RADEON 7770 graphics cards with uP1609 voltage regulators
• Added limited core voltage control for reference design AMD RADEON 7850 graphics cards
• RestoreAfterSuspendedMode configuration file switch is no longer undocumented, now it is enabled by default and accessible via GUI in "General" tab in "Compatibility properties" section
• Added French localization
• Recompiled kernel mode driver to bypass false positive in driver verifier

I want to overclock my MSI 7850 2GB.

I get confused as soon as voltages etc are mentioned. The guide in the OP seems easy enough to follow but how do I actually go about oc'ing the card?

Thanks

I'm going to add a basic overclocking guide to the OP shortly Tom. For now though if you look back a few pages i wrote a brief guide for a couple of other lads.

For me to understand properly I kinda need everything broken down lol.

What is the easiest application to use for GPU overclocking?
