AMD Navi 23 ‘NVIDIA Killer’ GPU Rumored to Support Hardware Ray Tracing, Coming Next Year

Nothing new. RTX is NV getting a jump on a standard and making it look like their own, also blocking customers out and charging a premium... But enough people love bending over so they'll keep doing it!

Ray tracing will be a step change, like hardware T&L, but it won't happen (outside of mirror finish puddles) until much of the market can do it at reasonable performance hit

Blocking customers from what exactly?

That wasn't really his point now was it.

It is a fair critique to say AMD have not really innovated in the space since DX10.1.

edit:

Freesync I'd perhaps give AMD credit for.
And that certainly wasn't his point now was it? Ignoring mantel to vulkan and even hbm is a bit short sighted.

However, its a fair critique to say that rt wasn't invented by nvidia. Something that goes as far back as the late 70's.
;)

This image is even more confusing. Official TDP of the 5700 XT is 225W. It is almost flipped in that table.

180W is what something like GPU-Z would see.

Anyway there are still fans and VRM efficiency losses to add.

edit:

I'd probably just go off this then and add 50W for TBP.

If they are pushing 2.4ghz now, then will need to add to those numbers.

New case for big Navi.

At least it should Overclock good

speaking of puddles, was watching some gameplay of the new dirt 5 game on the series x and it has rayvtraced reflections in puddle but the funny thing is that the ray tracing only exists like 5 feet in front of the car and everything is else is not ray traced so as your driving in rain these reflections just pop out of nowhere in front of you it's freaking hilarious - reminds of PlayStation 1 games where every open world game has fog, that's what dirt 5 is like on the series x, it has lots of ray tracing fog where ray traced elements just pop into view at 5ft from the camera

IDK if this is good or bad, from my PoV as gaming as an escapist thing, I am not paying £1200 for mirror finish puddles and some bounced coloured lighting that could be emulated easily by all but the laziest of developers :p

The article doesn't quote anything that resembles saying no RT on AMD graphics. Does anyone have access to the actual article to confirm?

Ray tracing will only be available on PCs with GeForce graphics cards or via GeForce NOW at launch, though we expect that it'll be eventually compatible with AMD's new Navi graphics cards as well as being featured on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X once the proper enhancement updates drop for the next-gen consoles in 2021.

@Sargatanas2511 His point was that's a quote from WCCFtech who are referring to an article in a magazine, but don't actually provide the reference from that magazine on which they based that sentence.

I guess someone needs to buy the magazine! There's a preview that shows the article but it cuts off just as it starts talking about the ray tracing

Ah fair enough. I wonder if it's an optimisation issue or if money has changed hands... /skeptic.

Maybe, the article says they had a technical partnership with Nvidia on it whatever that really means...

I'm sure given it's a DX12 game and going to next gen consoles there will be Raytracing on AMD hardware too at some point.

AMD wouldn't release a unreleased gpu to them because they would only tell nvidia. I wouldn't be surprised if TWIMTBP partnership has folk in house at CDPR.
AMD would never send them unreleased cards under such conditions IMO.

So the likelihood that AMD cards won't see any optimization until console is very good speculation IMO.

Haha you know what i just reread it, Wccftech are talking about existing AMD hardware, not rdna2. All the people on this forum jumping on this article and claiming like rdna2 won't support RT on CP2077 at launch is laughable. I expect most of them to cease posting after the 28th Oct when all there garbage rumours are finally put to bed
