AMD Navi 23 ‘NVIDIA Killer’ GPU Rumored to Support Hardware Ray Tracing, Coming Next Year

My issue with raytracing is we are heralding its awesomeness in games like Minecraft and Quake, both visually unappealing games, Quake was made in the 90s and Minecraft looks like it could have been.

This to me points to one thing, RT is still years from mainstream, when we are having to dig up low res old games, to implement and show off a feature, it screams to me that the hardware power for these features are just not there yet.

Hence the massive impact on games fps when turning on their added RT that feature it, DLSS seems to have been invented as a crutch for that.

We are still probably 5 years from decent workable hardware level RT, the console implementation will also be nothing more than a token addition i feel.

Ill stick to raster performance for now thanks
Rasta performance for the win!

:D
LOL,
You are really that upset that AMD and consoles can do RT. So you can't say its nvidia exclusive anymore. And you try to put down a console game you allegedly bought...just to reply to me how bad rt is? Hahaha. Funny stuff. A sentiment that I would not value but still funny.

Oh, BTW, earlier in this thread it was predicted that a microscope would be used to compare those rasteeized rt differences. Just do a search on microscope/magnifying glass. So good job for that self fulfilled prophecy. And those consoles aren't released yet.
:D

And yes, I have my ps5 ordered. Not sure why that matters but I'm going for GT 7. :p
As for 28th, I find it hilarious that you are that upset with me on my opinion about rdna 2. Reads like a "you" problem.

However, I'm not impressed with how rt is used in the games so far with pc. So whatever rdna 2 does for rt will only be secondary to its overall performance for me. Which is part of why I have no desire for ampere. I do hope that doesn't cause a 2nd trigger for you.
:D

Point is, even though I’m buying it, I’m not lying to myself and others like you are. RT on consoles is close to garbage levels compared to what we already had on PC.

oh and, ordered a ps5 for gt7? Weird. Last time i checked there is no release date set yet for that game :D.

And lastly, why bring ampere into this? Did i mention that anywhere ? Seems like a ‘you’ problem :D

It is a common misconception with Quake 2 - it was chosen because the original lighting uses a static form similar to ray tracing (baked in radiosity) so it is relatively easy to rip it out and replace with path tracing without having to go to a lot of effort to rebuild all the game levels, etc. the implementation in Quake 2 unlike Minecraft has zero performance optimisations against its low res geometry, etc. rendering the same scenes but with the mesh complexity of a modern game would have around 4% additional impact on performance.

DLSS absolutely would be needed with higher quality settings though this generation (Quake 2 RTX doesn't use it due to licensing issues :( ) - my 1070 renders those scenes at 7 FPS at 1440p (or about 26 FPS with dynamic resolution scaling dropping as low as 40% resolution at times) - I have to drop to 800x600 to see playable FPS and you need the RT power of a 2080ti to get 60 FPS at 1080p.

Quake 2 has been a huge test bed for path tracing and already seen 2 significant updates so hopefully they will find a more suitable title to start moving the lessons to - another issue here is licensing - many more modern games you'd have no choice but to rebuild the levels to remove features which are used to cheat up effects which would conflict with ray tracing but the developers haven't released the source to do so in many cases not even the coding for the executable portion never mind the editor/utilities and raw map data files (personally if I was nVidia I'd have put more resources towards that end to show it off).

Not sure why everyone is getting excited about RT. As far as I can see it's a couple of generations away from not tanking frame rates. Until then it's like some of the Ultra settings, something we can manage without unless you enjoy taking screenshots ;)

As for "analysis" by DF. It's just an excuse for a video. They may be strictly correct but who runs around looking in detail at reflections?

Yup software has no respect for hardware..
Developers should shoot themselves if they have to recommend 3080 for 4k30 before the dawn of Hopper..

It's like one of those early unoptimized mess I used to churn out while dabbling in Python..

I used to talk to some Rare developers and they always laughed at how unoptimised PC software was whilst creating better games on tiny N64 cartridges. Amazing what they could do with so little space.

You tend to work with what you've got - years back we used to have little competitions seeing who could make the most advanced Quake 3 level in only 4KB and only 64KB (including all textures).

Ps5 preordered and paid day 1 ( couldnt preorder otherwise - stock went byebye in 1hr in all major stores ), demon souls, miles morales also preordered. You? Most likely not.

Guess what? Look at spiderman reflections in the trailer. No shadows in the reflection. Just a guy walking and a few boxy buildings running at half res. The ‘spidercat’ trailer when he walks into the store. Ooo amazing, sick RT. Just like all the other, legion will run RT at half res and who knows what other ‘optimizations’. :D:D

cant wait for the 28th, wonder how you’ll spin it next. That’s if AMD will have their RT drivers ready for Rdna2 and reviewers will be able to test the cards then in already existing games, which judging by zen3 event, wont happen. Prolly 2 more weeks after:

Strange defensive behaviour. Why post in AMD threads if you dislike them, go play your games.

I can't wait for the 28th to come so all the NVIDIA idiots can go back to their never ending wait for a 3080 thread

If going by chris as your standard nvidia worshipper's mentality then god help us. Must be another no news day in the queue.

When I was growing up on my older brothers hand-me-downs you learned how to save stuff before either the power cut, or you accidentally knocked the PSU brick that was oh so dodgy. Amazing what could fit on the regular cassette tapes too, but I dont wanna go back to the disk swapping on some games with floppy disk that was painful. Saying that, it was where loading screens were a thing and art was really good, I always respected what could be done by them guys with limited colour ranges.

So let me get this straight.. The benchmark for raytracing is Quake 2 and Minecraft? Two games I had enough of playing probably 5-15 years ago.

People moaning about console performance is hilarious. A console (without disc drive) costs less than half of what people are paying for a Gpu. Why is it even worth comparing if it is priced vastly different and aimed at a different market?

Do we start laughing at mobile phone games next for not running 4k 120fps.

Can we just try and be a grownup and consider that a complete pc costs considerably more than a console. Dont harp on about game prices either because that has no bearing on what the hardware is capable of.

Big Navi is going to surprise you

I must be one of the few that pointed this out before rroff explains a wall of text that doesnt justify it in any capacity. We have now after 50+ pages and two weeks moved on to now agreeing that it takes a 3080 to run any of these games with acceptable playability. So thus the elephant is in the room. Why have people invested in 2060-2080 cards (most of their stack) only to realise they cant actually use RTX and now they have to upgrade again?

Just a sensible observation as quite clearly those of us who held off from all the hype, promises and garbage didnt miss out on anything. Now we have experts commenting on consoles and big navi cards that are not even out to play on, if you think tuber videos with 'sources' are the new tea-leaf readers, you should take a look at some forum posts with just as much garbage in them.

Trust me, big Navi will be a nice GPU to get and more available than Nvidia

Big Navi is going to surprise you

Not sure what your point is here?

Im wanting a new gpu soon and big navi has piqued my interest. I will get one if its good, or ill get an nvidia card if they are better price / perf.

I'm not biased.

I just dont know why people feel a need to bemoan console capability when they are never going to match pc hardware costing vastly more money. My mondeo won't be as nice as a Bentley. That doesn't surprise me.

my point is that everyone is downplaying big navi and the point is that it will susprise you and deliver equal performance to the nvidia 3000 series and be more widely available and easier to get

Fresh leaks:

https://mobile.twitter.com/KittyYYuko/status/1318072755519062016

There is no XTX and LE
It should be: XT XTL XL (whats in a name..3 skus nonetheless)

https://mobile.twitter.com/KittyYYuko/status/1318073487060127745

22 May also be on the stage with 21
22 has a Dual-FAN 21 has a Triple-FAN
Some more clarification from same source:

https://mobile.twitter.com/KittyYYuko/status/1318120745407426562

The number of CU for 21 must be a multiple of 8. And, XT is full-fat. (assumed 80 by me)

Further clarification:
https://mobile.twitter.com/KittyYYuko/status/1318126991292264448

"Although I personally think 64 is more possible but I can't rule out the possibility of 72. And I really didn't expect 22 to be such a '40+192' configuration." (56, 64, 80 CU, my interpretation, salt advised as always)

Fresh leaks:
TBP Navi 21
XL 290w
XT 320w
XT oc 355w (if this is not going to kick the 3090 I don't know what will, salt advised as always)
