AMD on the road to recovery.

Talk about missing the point completely… I don’t even know how to respond.

My Tesla is powered by Intel and my Switch is powered by Nvidia but it doesn’t show up on the steam stats either.

The point is, the Steam Deck will have a negligible impact on AMDs revenue or steams install base because it’s a very much niche product for enthusiasts.

In regards to what is relevant to this thread i think its important, looking at AMD market share from a perspective of Windows devices only gives you entirely the wrong perspective of AMD's X86 market share, IE that they are tiny insignificant cog in the machine.

And i'll tell you why it matters, Intel use this chart to peacock their X86 marketshare prowess constantly.

Isn't Tesla using AMD CPUs and GPUs now?? A lot of airliners and military Airlifters such as the A400M use AMD based cockpit display control systems.

Yes.... https://www.theverge.com/2021/6/1/22462660/amd-tesla-model-x-s-plaid-ryzen-radeon-rdna-2

Elon Musk is a gamer and wants a PS5 type machine in his Tesla.

You're also right, AMD have been making SoC's for Aviation and Medical Equipment for some years now, a couple of decades.

Samsung's new high end line of Exynos SoC's have RDNA2 graphics, they will be used in the latest line of Phones and Tablets.

The large retailers for the DIY market all show AMD CPUs as the top bestsellers.

Steam is irrelevant, it includes all types of systems, I guess Pentium 4 and Core 2 Quad, too.

Steam Hardware & Software Survey (steampowered.com)

They do.... consistently it looks like this:

#1 5600X
#2 5800X
#3 5900X

Some of Intel's <$200 CPU's make it in to the top 10 but almost never Alder Lake.

Given how long ADL has been out and now that we have cheap B660 boards that is surprising, they are better CPU's than those ^^^^

At the same time i'm not really that concerned about it, Intel still has the power to crush AMD in ways that are nothing to do with competition, for as long as AMD are vulnerable to Intel in this way we don't have real competition, AMD needs to get to a size where if Intel punch AMD can punch right back and give them a bloody nose.

MSRP is MSRP, you cannot say to retailers "The Recommended Retail Price is $399" and then charge them $449 for the product.

That $399 MRSP product will be sold to the supply chain for $300, who will add their 15% and sell to retailers for $350, who will add their 15% so it lands at your door for $399.

Why do you think Nvidia never gave the 3080 12GB an MSRP, so they could sell in to the supply chain for whatever the market said they could.

But AMD bad.

Pretty healthy margins all over the industry, there is definitely room for some pricing competition!

That's gross, out of that they have to pay for the lights, people and R&D.

Net Margins, This is what they put in their pocket as profit.

AMD: 22% out of $16.43 Billion
Intel: 28% out of $79 Billion

Nvidia have not yet published but expected results are 32% Net, 67% Gross out of $17.5 Billion revenue

AMD's growth is set to continue through 2022 with an estimated $22 Billion year end revenue and gross margins of 51%. They will probably overtake Nvidia in revenue terms in this year.

While on the subject, some interesting info for you.

In 2017, the year the Ryzen 1800X was launched Intel gross margin was 65%,
AMD's was 34%.
In 2016 AMD gross margin was 23% and loosing money hand over fist since 2012.

Today Intel gross margin is 53% and still falling
AMD's is 50% and growing.

Telling is what Zen3's price hike and the wind-down of Zen2 has caused to their desktop share:

(from the Tom's article: https://www.tomshardware.com/news/intel-amd-4q-2021-2022-market-share-desktop-notebook-server-x86)
Or from the CB article (https://www.computerbase.de/2022-02...t-dank-server-und-notebook-allzeitrekord-auf/):

I know they are capacity constrained but not creating something to do with GF's 12nm was entirely AMD's decision.

You can't put that down to price hikes, AMD's marketshare grew when the price was high and is shrinking now the price is lower.

AMD have a hard limit on how many products they can make, they are jostling about what products they make.

AMD gets all necessary approvals for acquisition of Xilinx
https://ir.amd.com/news-events/pres...receives-all-necessary-approvals-for-proposed

"All conditions to the transaction closing have been satisfied and the company expects the transaction to close on or about February 14, 2022v"
Just in time for Valentine's day :p

This is going to be a huge boost for AMD, this $4 Billion revenue will be added to AMD's balance sheet, which if it was adeded to 2021 would have resulted in $20.5 Billion.

Chip designers in perspective year 2021.

#1 Samsung: $81.3 Billion
#2 Intel: $79 Billion
#3 SK Hynix: 37.1 Billion
#4 Micron: $30 Billion
#5 Qualcomm: $29.2 Billion
#6 Nvidia: $26 Billion (i got that wrong earlier)
#7 Broadcom: $20.9 Billion
#8 Advanced Micro Devices: $20.5 Billion (+ Xilinx)
#- Texas Instruments: $18.3 Billion
#- MediaTech: $17.7 Billion
#10 Advanced Micro Devices: $16.4 Billion (Actual)
#- Apple: $15.1 Billion
#- Infineon: $13.5 Billion
#- Kioxia: $13.4 Billion
#- ST: 12.8 Billion
#- NXP $11 Billion

But more importantly Xilinx have a lot of IP that is widely used in the industry, together with AMD's IP they can make products that can much more effectively take market share from Intel, this is why AMD wanted Xilinx, can't wait to see what they cook up together.

I should add Samsung will be using AMD's IP in their chips starting this year, i think they are already in production.

So that $80+ Billion Samsung are raking in; AMD will be getting a slice of that, all be it a very very small fraction.

To be honest I’d rather Intel were cut down a few pegs, AMD stay where they are and a space made for a 3rd or even 4th competitor in this space. That will really get the competitive edges flowing.

It probably needs Microsoft to pull their finger out and get some of that Apple Rosetta magic into Windows though as I can’t see that happening on X86, that door is well and truly closed.

There are other X86 Licence holders.

Its done.

  • Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ:AMD) said on Monday that it had completed its acquisition of Xilinx, adding that its Chief Executive, Dr. Lisa Su, would be the new chairman of the board.
  • In addition, John Caldwell, who joined the AMD board in 2006, will become its lead independent director.
  • At the close, Xilinx shareholders received 1.7234 shares of AMD common stock and cash in lieu of fractional AMD shares. Xilinx is now no longer listed on the NASDAQ.
  • AMD shares were up nearly 4% to $117.46 in early trading on Monday.
  • The company also announced that former Xilinx board members, Jon Olson and Elizabeth Vanderslice, will join the AMD board.
  • Wedbush Securities analyst Matt Bryson recently said AMD's fourth-quarter results and guidance show a company that provided "zero red flags" for investors and is staving off its top rival, Intel (NASDAQ:INTC).
